Game 1 Notes - Payton
on-base streak ended

Mark Payton of Texas had his streak of 101 games
reaching base safely halted by going 0 for 4. He did have a
sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the first.
"So what?" Payton said about the end of his
streak. "We lost. It's something I didn't pay attention to. I
think a lot of other people paid a lot more attention to it than
I did. We lost today, so that's the end of it."

UC Irvine and Texas have met three times and the
Anteaters have won all three. UCI topped the Longhorns twice in
the 2007 Round Rock Regional.

The two head coaches, Augie Garrido (1,917) of
Texas and Mike Gillespie (1,037) of UC Irvine have combined for
2,954 victories. Garrido has won five national championships and
Gillespie one.

There were six sacrifice hits in the game, one
away from the CWS record. UCI had four and Texas two. The
Longhorns lead the nation in sac bunts with 98 and the Anteaters
are second with 92.

UCI's Taylor Sparks went 3 for 4 for the
Anteaters and was a home run short of the cycle. He leads the
Anteaters with 17 doubles and is first in the nation with nine
triples.

Andrew Morales of UC Irvine had five strikeouts
and leads Division I with 141 punchouts.
