Wetzler pitches Oregon State to
series win over UW
Jackson State wins SWAC, Cal Poly nips
Northridge, Oregon edges UCLA
In Corvallis, Ore., Ben Wetzler tossed a
two-hitter with nine strikeouts as second-ranked Oregon State
blanked sixth-ranked Washington 3-0 in the rubber game of their
Pac-12 series Sunday. Wetzler (10-1) retired 12 of the final 13
Huskies in lowering his ERA to 0.84 and helping the Beavers
(22-5, 41-9) take a two-game lead on the Huskies (20-7, 38-13-1)
in the race for the conference title. Caleb Hamilton had a
two-run single as the Beavers scored three times in the fourth
inning. Dylan Davis added two hits and a run for OSU.
SWAC Championship Game: Jackson State 9,
Alabama State 8
In New Orleans, La., Melvin Rodriguez went 3 for
4 with a double, run and two RBI, and Charles Tillery went 3 for
4 with two runs and an RBI as Jackson State edged Alabama State
to repeat as SWAC champs. After not appearing in the NCAA
Tournament since 2000, the Tigers (31-23) will be making their
second straight trip. Desmond Russell (9-4) allowed six runs in
five innings, and Alex Juday posted his third save for Jackson
State. Dexter Price had two hits, including a homer, and three
RBI, and Waldyvan Estrada went 2 for 5 with a homer, three runs
and two RBI for the Hornets (37-20), who had won five of six
against the Tigers this season.
No. 5 Cal Poly 3, Cal State Northridge 2
In Northridge, Calif., Danny Zandona tossed 3.1
innings of one-hit relief, and Reid Reilly notched his 10th save
with two scoreless innings as Cal Poly completed a sweep of Cal
State Northridge and captured its first Big West Conference
title. Zach Zehner went 3 for 4 with two runs, and Chris Hoo
went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Mustangs (19-5, 45-10). Chester
Pak had two hits and a run for the Matadors (6-15, 18-35).
No. 20 Oregon 5, UCLA 4 (11)
In Los Angeles, Nick Catalano singled in Mitchell
Tolman in the bottom of the 11th inning as Oregon completed a
Pac-12 sweep of UCLA. The Ducks (17-10, 40-16) got 8.2 innings
of scoreless relief from Trent Paddon, Jordan Spencer, Stephen
Nogosek and Garrett Cleavinger (3-1). Catalano finished 2 for 4
with two runs, and Mark Karaviotis drove in a two for Oregon.
Shane Zeile had two hits and two RBI, and Justin Hazard had two
RBI for the Bruins (10-17, 23-29-1).
