Washington
Wake Forest nips Virginia, ULL outlasts
ULM, Duke knocks off FSU
In Corvallis, Ore., Jace Fry tossed a shutout
with nine strikeouts as second-ranked Oregon State won 1-0 to
even its series with No. 6 Washington and reclaim sole
possession of first place in the Pac-12. Fry (11-1) scattered
seven hits and walked three. The game was scoreless through
eight before Dylan Davis delivered a leadoff single in the
bottom of the ninth, was sacrificed to second and came home on a
double by Logan Ice (2 for 4) to give the victory to the Beavers
(21-5, 40-9). Trevor Mitsui and Austin Rei both had two hits for
the Huskies (20-6, 38-12-1).
Wake Forest 4, No. 1 Virginia 3
In Winston-Salem, N.C., Will Cragi had a two-run
single in a three-run sixth inning as Wake Forest topped
Virginia to take their ACC series and claim the eighth seed in
the upcoming ACC Tournament. Joey Rodriguez homered in the third
inning, and Ben Breazeale had an RBI single in the sixth when
the Demon Deacons (15-15, 30-25) took a 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers
(22-8, 43-11) scored a run on an error in the ninth and had the
bases loaded when Parker Dunshee got out of the mess with a
strikeout. Mike Papi hit his 10th homer for Virginia.
No. 3 Louisiana-Lafayette 6, ULM 5 (14)
In Lafayette, La., Seth Harrison had a
bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 14th to lift
Louisiana-Lafayette to a sweep of ULM in the Sun Belt. The Ragin’
Cajuns (26-4, 49-7) tied the school mark for wins and set a Sun
Belt mark for the most regular-season conference wins and fewest
losses. Michael Strentz went 3 for 6 with a homer and two runs
for Louisiana. Keeling Rasch went 5 for 7 with three doubles and
a run and an RBI for the Warhawks (11-19, 22-34), who tied the
game with a run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning.
Duke 7, No. 4
Florida State 5
In Tallahassee, Fla.
Ryan Deitrich homered in the third inning to score two runs and
lead Duke to their final win of the regular season and first win
of the three-game ACC series with Florida State. Deitrich went 1
for 3 with two RBI, while Mark Lumpa went 2 for 4 with a double
and two runs for the Blue Devils (16-14, 32-23). Trent Swart (8
IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 SO) earned the win for the Blue Devils,
finishing the regular season at 5-2. Justin Gonzalez homered in
the seventh inning scoring two runs, but the rally wasn’t enough
for the Seminoles (21-9, 41-14) to earn a win.
No. 5 Cal Poly 6, Cal State Northridge 3
In Northridge, Calif., Mark Mathias went 3 for 4
with two doubles and two RBI as Cal Poly clinched a Big West
series win over Cal State Northridge. The first-place Mustangs
(18-5, 44-10) scored in five of the first seven innings. Jimmy
Allen (3 for 5, 3 R) homered for Cal Poly. Casey Bloomquist
(12-1, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, BB, 7 K) earned the win. Ranny Lowe drove
in a pair for the Matadors (6-14, 18-34).
No. 7 Louisville

In Louisville, Ky.,
Anthony Kidston pitches a two-hitter as Louisville handled
Cincinnati with ease to end the regular season with a win.
Kidston (7 IP, 2 BB, 6 SO) pitched a shutout for the Cards
(19-5, 43-13) ending the regular season 6-0, while Shane Crain
went 1 for 1 with a double down to right field to score three
runs in the seventh inning to mercy-rule the Bearcats (6-18,
22-31). Andrew Zellner (1.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R) ended the regular
season 4-4, while Ian Happ and Devin Wenzel went 1 for 3 for the
Bearcats.
Oklahoma 8, No. 8 Oklahoma State 1
In Tulsa, Okla., Anthony Hermelyn and Kolbey
Carpenter both had two-run singles in the first as Oklahoma
salvaged the finale of its Big 12 series with Oklahoma State.
Hermelyn and Carpenter both had two hits and a run, while Craig
Aikin added two hits and two runs for the Sooners (8-16, 28-27).
Sheldon Neuse had a two-run homer in the eighth for OU. Kindle
Ladd (4-3, 5 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, K) picked up the win, while
Jeffrey Curran allowed one run over the final four innings with
four strikeouts to record his first save. Tim Arakawa had two
hits and a run for the Cowboys (18-6, 41-14).
No. 9 Miami 2, North Carolina 0
In Coral Gables, Fla., Bryan Radziewski allowed
six hits and struck out six in six scoreless innings as Miami
took the rubber game of its series with North Carolina and won
its second ACC regular-season title. The Hurricanes (24-6,
40-15) started 13-12 before going 27-3 over their final 30
games, including 19-2 in the ACC. David Thompson went 2 for 4
with a run and an RBI, and Johnny Ruiz added an RBI for Miami.
Michael Russell had two hits for the Tar Heels (15-15, 32-23).
Tennessee 7, No. 10 Florida 5
In Knoxville, Tenn., A.J. Simcox went 2 for 3
with two RBI – both game-tying singles – and Tennessee salvaged
the final game of its SEC series with Florida to earn a spot in
the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2007. Andy Cox (5-1)
allowed five runs with five strikeouts in seven innings, and
Andrew Lee posted his fourth save for the Volunteers (12-18,
31-22). Taylor Gushue went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBI
for the Gators (21-9, 37-19), the top seed in the SEC tourney.
No. 11 LSU 8, Auburn 1
In Auburn, Ala., Kade Scivicque went 3 for 4 with
a homer, two runs and two RBI, and Andrew Stevenson added two
hits and two RBI as LSU completed an SEC sweep of Auburn. Kyle
Bouman (4-2) allowed four hits and a run in five innings for the
winning Tigers (17-11-1, 40-14-1), who earned the third seed in
the SEC Tournament. Dan Glevenyak went 3 for 4 for Auburn
(10-20, 28-28), which fell short of making the SEC tourney.
No. 13 South Carolina 6, No. 12 Vanderbilt 3
In Nashville, Tenn., DC Arendas had a two-run
single to key a four-run eighth inning as South Carolina won the
rubber game of its SEC series with Vanderbilt. Will Crowe (7-3)
allowed four hits and three earned runs with nine strikeouts,
and Joel Seddon turned in two scoreless innings for his 15th
save for the Gamecocks (18-12, 42-14). Marcus Mooney went 3 for
4 with two runs, and Joey Pankake added a pair of RBI for South
Carolina. Dansby Swanson and Zander Wiel each had two hits and a
run for Vanderbilt (17-13, 40-16).
Texas A&M 9, No. 14 Ole Miss 6
In College Station, Texas, Troy Stein and Krey
Bratsen each had two hits and two RBI as Texas A&M salvaged the
final game of its SEC series with Ole Miss. The Aggies (14-16,
33-23) scored four times in the eighth inning, thanks in part to
a sloppy innings from the Rebels (19-11, 40-16), who made four
errors in the game. Austin Bousfield and J.B. Woodman drove in
two runs apiece for Ole Miss, the second seed in next week’s SEC
Tournament.
No. 15 Indiana 8, Minnesota 0
In Bloomington, Ind., Brian Korte and two
relievers combined on the shutout as Indiana won its Big Ten
series against Minnesota. Korte (3-0) allowed four hits in five
innings with two strikeouts, while Scott Effross (2.2 IP, 3 H,
K) and Jake Kelzer (1.1 IP, H, BB, K) preserved the shutout. The
Hoosiers (21-3, 38-13) added to a 1-0 lead with three in the
sixth and put up four more in the eighth. Dustin DeMuth (2 for
4, R) and Tim O’Conner (1 for 2) both drove in two, while Sam
Travis added two doubles and two runs for IU. Matt Fiedler went
3 for 4 for the Gophers (13-11, 27-22). The Hoosiers did not
allow more than four runs in any of their 24 Big Ten contests
and posted a team ERA of 1.53 in conference outings, the lowest
by a Big Ten team since Iowa had a 1.17 ERA in league games in
1965.
No. 16 Houston 7, Temple 5
In Camden, N.J., leadoff hitter Kyle Survance
reached base four times and scored three as Houston split a pair
of American contests at Temple. The finale of the series was
canceled due to travel deadlines by the Cougars (14-9, 41-14).
Survance had two hits, including a double, and two walks. Justin
Montemayor had three hits and a run for UH. Tyler Ford (7-0, 5.1
IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 7 K) earned the win in relief, while Chase
Wellbrock allowed one hit and fanned one over the final two
innings for his 11th save. Andrew Nist (3 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI)
homered for the Owls (9-14, 14-30).
No. 17 TCU 7, Baylor 1
In Waco, Texas, Derek Odell went 3 for 5 with a
homer, two runs and two RBI to lead TCU to a Big 12 series win
over Baylor. The Horned Frogs (17-7, 38-15) expanded a 3-0 lead
with four in the sixth. Cody Jones was a homer short of the
cycle for TCU. Tyler Alexander (8-3, 6 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, 7 K)
picked up the win. Brett Doe went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run
for the Bears (8-15, 24-29).
No. 18 Rice 4, Louisiana Tech 3 (11)
In Houston, Leon Byrd delivered an RBI single in
the bottom of the 11th as Rice completed the three-game
Conference USA sweep of Louisiana Tech. Byrd finished with three
hits, while teammate Michael Aquino homered for the Owls (23-7,
36-17). Matt Ditman (4-5) hurled four scoreless innings in
relief with four hits, one walk and three strikeouts to claim
the victory. Taylor Love had three hits and two RBI for the
Bulldogs (5-25, 15-35).
Alabama 2, No. 19 Mississippi State 1
In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mikey White and Ben Moore
each hit solo homers as Alabama salvaged the final game of its
SEC series with Mississippi State. Justin Kamplain (6-3) allowed
three hits in 5.1 scoreless innings, and Thomas Burrows earned
his 10th save with 2.1 scoreless innings for the Crimson Tide
(15-14, 34-21), who closed out Sewell-Thomas Stadium with a win.
Seth Heck went 2 for 5 with an RBI for the Bulldogs (18-12,
35-20).
No. 20 Oregon 4, UCLA 1
In Los Angeles, Kyle Garlick had two hits and two
RBI as Oregon clinched a Pac-12 series win over UCLA. Tyler
Baumgartner also had two hits, with a triple, one run and one
RBI for the Ducks (16-10, 39-16). Jeff Gold (10-1, 6 IP, 7 H, R,
2 K) earned the win, while Jake Reed allowed one hits and fanned
two in the ninth for his 13th save. Gold tied the program record
for career victories with 23. Shane Zeile (2 for 4) homered in
the sixth for the Bruins (10-16, 23-28-1).
