Washington nips OSU to forge
first-place tie in Pac-12
Bucknell wins Patriot title, Penn State
turns two triple plays in one game
In Corvallis, Ore., Jared Fisher allowed five
hits and two runs in six solid innings, and Alex Schmidt and
Austin Rei had two hits and a run apiece as sixth-ranked
Washington moved into a tie for first place in the Pac-12 by
beating No. 2 Oregon State 4-2 Friday before a crowd of 3,309.
The Huskies (20-5, 38-11-1) scored three times in the second
inning off Andrew Moore (5-4). Fisher (6-3) allowed a pair of
runs in the fourth inning, and Trevor Dunlap struck out four
over two innings and Troy Rallings earned his ninth save for the
Huskies. Trever Morrison had two hits and two runs for the
Beavers (20-5, 39-9).
Bucknell 5-7, Lehigh 4-2
In Lewisburg, Pa., Bryson Hough and Dan Weigel
provided two solid starts, with Hough retiring 20 in a row at
one point in Game 1, as top-seeded Bucknell swept Lehigh in the
Patriot League Tournament Championship to capture its first trip
to the NCAA Tournament since 2010. The Bison (29-17-1) join
Columbia as the first two teams in the NCAA field. Danny
Rafferty, who went 4 for 7 on the day, had a two-run double to
tie Game 1 at 2, and Brett Smith gave the Bison a 3-2 lead with
a RBI single in the eighth. Bucknell raced to a 5-0 lead, and
Weigel worked into the eighth in Game 2. The Mountain Hawks
finish at 25-24.
Michigan State 4-4, Penn State 2-1
In University Park, Pa., Penn State turned two
triple plays in the opener of their Big Ten doubleheader with
Michigan State. In the top of the fourth in Game 1, the Spartans
(10-13, 28-24) had runners on first and second. With the runners
on the move, a line drive was hit to Jim Haley at short, who
stepped on second and threw to first for triple play No. 1. In
the eighth, MSU again had runners on first and second. With the
runners in motion, a liner was hit to Taylor Skerpon at second,
who flipped to Haley covering and second before the throw back
to first completed the triple play.

The Nittany Lions (5-17, 18-31) joined Gonzaga (April 4, 2006
vs. Washington State) as the only Division I teams to achieve
the feat. It has only happened once in Major League history, as
the Minnesota Twins recorded a pair of triple plays against the
Boston Red Sox on July 17, 1990. Jimmy Pickens went 2 for 4 with
a homer and two runs while Ryan Richardson added two hits and
two RBI for the Spartans in Game 1. Mick VanVossen (7.2 IP, 5 H,
2 BB, 5 K) earned the win, while Jeff Kinley (1 IP, H)
registered his 10th save for MSU. Greg Guers went deep for PSU.
In Game 2, Blaise Salter went 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBI
to lead the Spartans. Justin Alleman (6-2, 7 IP, 4 H, R, 5 K)
picked up the win, while Kinley walked one and fanned three in
the ninth for save No. 11.
Wake Forest 6-2, No. 1 Virginia 5-7 (Game 1 -
10 innings)
In Winston Salem, N.C., Wake Forest scored three
times in the ninth inning to force extra innings, and Conor
Keniry delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 10th as Wake
Forest shocked top-ranked Virginia 6-5 Friday in the first game
of their ACC doubleheader. In the second game, Artie Lewicki
tossed seven scoreless innings as the Cavaliers gained a split
with a 7-2 decision. Keniry hit a solo homer to make it 5-3 in
the ninth, and after Ben Breazeale doubled, Nate Mondou ripped a
pinch-hit, two-run homer to tie the game at 5. With the win, the
Demon Deacons (14-15, 29-25) clinched a spot in the ACC
Tournament. In Game 2, Robbie Coman went 3 for 4 with two RBI,
and Mike Papi had a two-run homer for the Cavaliers (23-7,
43-10).
Texas 12, Kansas State 0
In Manhattan, Kan., Dillon Peters and Morgan
Cooper combined on a no-hitter as Texas blanked Kansas State.
Peters (6-3) walked three in seven innings with eight
strikeouts, while Cooper walked one and fanned one over the
final two frames. Kacy Clemens (2 for 4, 3 RBI) and Madison
Carter (3 for 3, 3 R, 2 RBI) both homered for the Longhorns
(12-10, 35-15). Ross Kivett and Max Brown both drew a walk and
stole a base for the Wildcats (4-18, 24-29).
No. 3 Louisiana-Lafayette 9, ULM 1
In Lafayette, La., Ryan Leonards went 2 for 4
with two runs and two RBI as Louisiana-Lafayette clinched a Sun
Belt series win over ULM. The Ragin' Cajuns (25-4, 48-7) broke a
1-1 tie with two in the third and added two in the fifth and
three in the sixth. Greg Davis (2 for 3) and Michael Strentz (1
for 3, 2 R) both homered for ULL. Carson Baranik (10-1, 4 IP, 3
H, R, 3 K) was awarded the win, while Matt Plitt (5 IP, 3 H, BB,
5 K) earned his third save. Trent Lucas went 2 for 3 with a run
for the Warhawks (11-18, 22-33).
No 4. Florida
State 9, Duke 8
In Tallahassee, Fla.,
DJ Stewart had a big game with four hits and three RBI to lead
Florida State over Duke to take a 2-0 lead in the ACC series.
Stewart had an RBI double and scored in the third to get the
Seminoles (21-8, 41-13) rolling, while Jose Brizuela went 3 for
4 with two RBI. Mike Compton (5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 SO) earned the
win with the start, while Dylan Silva recorded the final out to
pick up his first save, ending the Blue Devils’ (15-14, 31-23)
five-run rally in the ninth. Ryan Deitrich went 3 for 4 with two
doubles, a homer and two RBI for Duke.
No. 5 Cal Poly 16, Cal State Northridge 10
In Northridge, Calif., Jimmy Allen wnet 3 for 5
with two homers and four RBI, and Nick Torres went 4 for 6 with
two runs and three RBI as Cal Poly outslugged Cal State
Northridge. Kevin Morgan went 2 for 2 with two runs and three
RBI, and Brian Mundell added four hits and three runs for the
Mustangs (17-5, 43-10), who totaled four homers and seven
doubles among their 20 hits. Matt Imhof improved to 9-4 with
seven solid innings. William Colanton had two hits and four RBI,
and Chester Pak went 3 for 4 with two RBI for the Matadors
(6-13, 18-33).
No. 7 Louisville 5, Cincinnati 1
In Louisville, Ky., Josh Rogers struck out 10 in
eight brilliant innings, and Jeff Gardner went 3 for 3 with a
homer and two RBI as Louisville beat Cincinnati for the second
straight day by the same score. Nick Solak went 2 for 5 with a
solo homer and two runs for the Cardinals (18-5, 42-13). Rogers
(2-2) allowed four hits and one earned run in eight innings.
Devin Wenzel drove in the lone run for the Bearcats (6-17,
22-30).
No. 8 Oklahoma State 2, Oklahoma 1
In Tulsa, Okla., Tyler Buffett worked seven
scoreless innings, and Vince Wheeland improved to 8-0 as
Oklahoma State scored on an infield error in the bottom of the
ninth to edge Oklahoma and claim the Big 12 regular-season
title. Buffett allowed four hits and struck out six, and
Wheeland picked up the win after allowing a run in the eighth
inning – a sacrifice fly from Colt Bickerstaff. Donnie Walton
hit his third homer for the Cowboys (18-5, 41-13).
No. 9 Miami 6-2, North Carolina 5-11 (Game 1 -
16 innings)
In Coral Gables, Fla., Tyler Palmer delivered a
two-run, game-winning single in the bottom of the 16th inning as
Miami won the first game of its ACC doubleheader with North
Carolina. The Tar Heels, behind three RBI from Wood Myers, took
the nightcap. The Hurricanes (23-6, 39-15) won their 26th in 28
games when they loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a
walk. Palmer singled to right – his fifth hit of the game – and
Ricky Eusebio narrowly scored the game-winning run on a play at
the plate. Landon Lassiter had three hits, and Benton Moss
totaled nine strikeouts in the second game for the Tar Heels
(15-14, 32-22).
No. 10 Florida 4, Tennessee 2
In Knoxville, Tenn., Taylor Gushue went 3 for 4
with two doubles, a run and an RBI to lead Florida past
Tennessee to clinch the SEC regular-season title. The Gators
(21-8, 37-18) scored in the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie and added
two in the eighth. A.J. Puk (5-2, 5 IP, 3 H, R, 3 BB, 5 K)
recorded the win, while Kirby Snead (2.1 IP, 3 H, R, BB, K)
earned his second save. Taylor Smart (2 for 4) homered for the
Volunteers (11-18, 30-22).
No. 11 LSU 11, Auburn 3
In Auburn, Ala., Aaron Nola fanned nine over
seven innings as LSU secured an SEC series win over Auburn. Nola
(9-1) allowed five hits, one walk and one run. The visiting
Tigers (16-11-1, 39-14-1) blew the game open with five-run
outbursts on both the fourth and fifth. Conner Hale (3 for 4, 3
R, 2 RBI) had two doubles, while Christian Ibarra drove in a
pair for LSU. Blake Austin and Jordan Ebert both had two hits
and one RBI for the home Tigers (10-19, 28-27).
No. 12 Vanderbilt 9, No. 13 South Carolina 3
In Nashville, Tenn., Zander Wiel homered and
drove in three as Vanderbilt evened its SEC series with South
Carolina. He had an RBI single in a four-run first and a two-run
dinger in a four-run fifth as the Commodores (17-12, 40-15)
built an 8-2 lead. Carson Fulmer (5-1, 5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 4
K) took the win, while Hayden Stone (3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 K) notched
his third save. Kyle Martin went 4 for 5 with a double and one
RBI for the Gamecocks (17-12, 41-14).
No. 14 Ole Miss 4, Texas A&M 2
In College Station, Texas, Scott Weathersby
tossed four scoreless innings to earn his second save as Ole
Miss clinched an SEC series win over Texas A&M. Weathersby
allowed one hit and fanned three to save the game for Christian
Trent (8-0, 5 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 K). J.B. Woodman had an RBI triple
and scored in the sixth as the Rebels (19-10, 40-15) erased a
2-1 deficit. Will Allen went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI
for Ole Miss. Logan Nottebrok (2 for 4) homered for the Aggies
(13-16, 32-23).
No. 15 Indiana 7, Minnesota 3
In Bloomington, Ind., Nick Ramos went 2 for 3
with a double, two runs and one RBI as Indiana topped Minnesota
to clinch the Big Ten regular-season title. The Hoosiers (20-3,
37-13) took the lead for good with three in the fourth.
Christian Morris (5-3, 5.1 IP, 4 H, UE, 2 BB, 5 K) earned the
victory, while Thomas Belcher (2 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 2 K) recorded
his fourth save. Jordan Smith was 2 for 4 with a double, one run
and one RBI for the Gophers (13-10, 27-21).
No. 17 TCU 5, Baylor 0
In Waco, Texas, Preston Morrison tossed eight
shutout innings as TCU evened its Big 12 series with Baylor.
Morrison (8-3) allowed three hits and one walk with six
strikeouts. Derek Odell had three hits and a run, while Kevin
Cron drove in a pair for the Horned Frogs (16-7, 37-15). Duncan
Wendel had two hits for the Bears (8-14, 24-28).
No. 18 Rice 3, Louisiana Tech 0
In Houston, Blake Fox allowed two hits in eight
shutout innings as Rice clinched a Conference USA series win
over Louisiana Tech. Fox (11-0) walked three and fanned seven.
Ditman walked one and struck out one in a hitless ninth for his
ninth save. The Owls (22-7, 36-17) scored its three in the
seventh, with two coming in on a base hit by Kirby Taylor. Jacob
Derouen went 1 for 2 with a walk for the Bulldogs (5-24, 15-34).
No. 19 Mississippi State 1, Alabama 0
In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Ross Mitchell and Jonathan
Holder combined on the shutout as Mississippi State secured an
SEC series win over Alabama. Mitchell (8-4) allowed five hits
and two walks with two strikeouts, while Holder fanned five in
the final 2.2 frames with one hit for his seventh save. Matthew
Britton hit his first home run in the top of the seventh for the
Bulldogs (18-11, 35-19) for the game's lone run. Kyle Overstreet
had two hits for the Crimson Tide (14-14, 33-21).
No. 20 Oregon 2, UCLA 1
In Los Angeles, Calif., Tommy Thorpe worked into
the seventh inning, and Oregon threw out two runners at the
plate in the eighth inning in a Pac-12 win over UCLA. The
Bruins’ Brian Carroll was thrown out by first baseman Mitchell
Tolman on a bunt, and Austin Grebeck then threw out Luke Persico
from left, with catcher Shaun Chase leaping and tagging on the
second play. Tolman went 3 for 4 with a run and scored the
go-ahead run for the Ducks (15-10, 38-16) in the seventh inning
– on a safety squeeze, Tolman waited until after the throw to
first and slid hard into Shane Zeile, who couldn’t hang onto the
ball. James Kaprielian (6-6) struck out 11 in a complete game
for the Bruins (10-15, 23-27-1).
Western Carolina 10-4, Davidson 2-3
In Cullowhee, N.C., Jeremy Null tossed his first
complete game and struck out nine as Western Carolina beat
Davidson in the first game of a doubleheader as the Catamounts
claimed the Southern Conference’s regular-season title. It marks
the 13th title for the Catamounts, who completed a
sweep of the second-place Wildcats. Davidson entered the weekend
seeking its first SoCon title.
Radford 4-4, Liberty 1-9
In Radford, Va., Michael Costello tossed 4.1
innings of solid relief as Radford ended Liberty’s 20-game Big
South winning streak in the first game of a doubleheader. The
game was delayed for nearly a half hour after Highlanders
centerfielder Blake Sipe and shortstop Danny Hrbek collided in
shallow center – Sipe broke his right tibia. The Flames won the
second game behind a two-run homer from Josh Gardiner and two
RBI from Hunter Higgerson.
