Pankake Delivers for South Carolina in 10th

ULL rallies past ULM, FSU blanks Duke, Louisville tops Cincinnati

 

In Nashville, Tenn., Joey Pankake homered with one away in the top of the 10th as No. 13 South Carolina nipped No. 12 Vanderbilt 4-3 Thursday to kick off their SEC series. Max Schrock (2 for 5, R) had an RBI single in the top of the ninth with two away as the Gamecocks (17-11, 41-13) tied it at 3-3. Pankake finished with two hits and two RBI. Joel Seddon (3-1, 2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, K) earned the victory. Zander Wiel went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and one RBI for the Commodores (16-12, 39-15).

 

No. 3 Louisiana-Lafayette 12, ULM 9

In Lafayette, La., Greg Davis had a game-tying two-run triple in the sixth and later scored the go-ahead run as Louisiana-Lafayette overcame ULM to begin their Sun Belt series. Davis (2 for 5, 2 R, 4 RBI) knotted the score at 9-9 with his three-bagger and gave the Ragin’Cajuns (24-4, 47-7) a 10-9 lead when he crossed home later in the frame. Davis had a two-run homer in the third for the victors. ULL added single runs in the seventh and eighth for insurance. Seth Harrison (2 for 3, 3B, 3R), Caleb Adams (3 for 5, R) and Dylan Butler (1 for 2, HR) each knocked in two for the Cajuns. Matt Hicks (6-1, 2.2 IP, H, UE, BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Ryan Wilson retired the final nine batters in order to record his seventh save. Dalton Herrington (3 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) went deep for the Warhawks (11-17, 22-32), who have dropped 10 straight to ULL.

 

No. 4 Florida State 3, Duke 0

In Tallahassee, Fla. Luke Weaver pitched seven scoreless innings with Jameis Winston coming in for the save to keep the shutout alive as Florida State earned the opening win of the ACC series against Duke. The Seminoles (20-8, 40-13) had a huge third inning, scoring three times with three hits as Danny De La Calle (2 for 2) had an RBI single to knock in John Sansone with the other two runs scoring off a single and a groundout.  Weaver (7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 SO) pitched a great game for the Seminoles with Winston retiring the side in order in the ninth for his sixth save. FSU reached 40 wins for the 37th consecutive season. Andrew Istler (7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 SO) pitched well for the Blue Devils (15-13, 31-22), but it wasn’t enough to get the opening win of the series. Jordan Betts had two hits for Duke.

 

No. 7 Louisville 5, Cincinnati 1

In Louisville, Ky., Kyle Funkhouser allowed one unearned run in six innings with seven strikeouts as Louisville claimed the American series opener against Cincinnati. Funkhouser (11-2) allowed four hits and four walks. Nick Burdi fanned the final batter of the game for his 14th save. The Cardinals (17-5, 41-13) scored twice in the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie and added two on a double by Zach Lucas in the eighth. Alex Chittenden had two hits and two runs for Louisville. Matt Williams went 4 for 5 with a double and a run for the Bearcats (6-16, 22-29).

 

No. 8 Oklahoma State 4, Oklahoma 2

In Oklahoma City, Okla., Conor Costello belted a three-run homer in the fifth as Oklahoma State stopped Oklahoma to kick off their Big 12 series. Zach Fish went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs for the Cowboys (17-5, 40-13). Jon Perrin (7-3, 7.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 K) earned the victory, while Brendan McCurry worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save. Craig Aikin had two hits and a run for the Sooners (7-15, 27-26).

 

No. 14 Florida 6, Tennessee 5 (11)

In Knoxville, Tenn. Florida pulled out a win in extra innings as Harrison Bader scored in the 11th inning due to a throwing error by Tennessee in the SEC series opener. Peter Alonso went 2 for 5 for the Gators (20-8, 36-18) with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the second inning, while Bader went 3 for 5 with one RBI. Ryan Harris (1 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) got the win with Kirby Snead (1 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) earning his first save. Florida secured at least a share of its 13th SEC regular season title and clinched its 22nd Eastern Division crown. Andrew Lee (3 IP, 4 H, 2 R) took the loss for the Volunteers (11-17, 30-21). Taylor Smart smacked a three-run homer for UT in the sixth.
