Lankford Lifts Texas A&M over LSU
Florida nips Alabama, Oregon State stops
Cal, ULL blanks ASU
In College Station, Texas, Cole Lankford had a
game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as Texas A&M won
3-2 Saturday to even its SEC series with fifth-ranked LSU.
Lankford finished with three hits and two RBI for the Aggies
(11-12, 29-19). Daniel Mengden (4-6) went the distance for Texas
A&M with five hits, two runs, one walk and five strikeouts.
Conner Hale (2 for 4) had an RBI triple and scored in the fourth
for the Tigers (13-9-1, 35-12-1).
No. 7 Florida 4, No. 16 Alabama 3
In Tuscaloosa, Ala., A.J. Puk was the winning
pitcher and had the game-winning hit as Florida clinched an SEC
series win at Alabama. Puk (4-2) hurled 2.2 innings in relief
with two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Harris tossed
a perfect ninth for his fifth save. The Gators (17-6, 32-15)
trailed 3-2 after five before a leadoff homer by Taylor Gushue
in the sixth tied it at 3-3. Puk added an RBI single later in
the frame to give Florida a 4-3 advantage. Casey Turgeon went 3
for 3 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Gators. Kyle
Overstreet went 2 for 3 with one RBI for the Crimson Tide
(13-10, 30-17).
No. 2 Oregon State 9, California 3 (10)
In Berkeley, Calif., Andy Peterson had an RBI
double to spark a seven-run 10th as Oregon State clinched a
Pac-12 series win at California. Jeff Hendrix (2 for 5) and Gabe
Clark (2 BB, RBI) both scored twice for the Beavers (16-4,
33-8). Scott Schultz (5-2, 1.2 IP, 2 H, R, 2 K) registered the
victory. The Golden Bears (7-13, 19-23) trailed 2-0 before
plating a pair in the bottom of the eighth. Devon Rodriguez had
two hits and one RBI for Cal.
No. 3 Louisiana-Lafayette 7, Arkansas State 0
In Jonesboro, Ark., Carson Baranik tossed a
two-hit shutout as Louisiana-Lafayette won its Sun Belt series
at Arkansas State. Baranik (9-1) did not walk a batter and
struck out seven. He retired the final 15 hitters in the game.
The Ragin' Cajuns (20-3, 43-6) scored three in the second to
take the lead for good. Seth Harrison drove in two, while Tyler
Girouard went 3 for 5 with a double, a run and an RBI for ULL.
Zach Maggio and Matt Burgess both went 1 for 3 for the Red
Wolves (14-9, 26-21).
No. 4 Cal Poly 7, UC Riverside 5
In Riverside, Calif., Mark Mathias had two hits
and three RBI as Cal Poly evened its Big West series win at UC
Riverside and snapped a four-game losing streak. The Mustangs
(13-4, 37-9) trailed 3-0 before scoring single runs in the fifth
and sixth, while taking the lead for good with two in the
seventh. Their final three runs came in the eighth. Zack Zehner
and Brian Mundell both had three hits for Cal Poly. Taylor Chris
(4-0, 3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 BB) picked up the win, while Reed Reilly
(2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K) recorded his eighth save.
Francisco Tellez had two hits, a run and two RBI for the
Highlanders (8-6, 20-22).
No. 5 Florida State 5-3, Minnesota 4-2
In Tallahassee, Fla., John Nogowski went 7 for 9
and drove in the game-winner in the opener as Florida State won
a pair of one-run contests against Minnesota. In Game 1, Tony
Skjefte had a two-run double to cap a three-run ninth as the
Golden Gophers (22-18) took a 4-3 lead before DJ Stewart (2 for
5, 2R) tied it in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single and
scored the game-winner on a base hit by Nogowski. In the second
game, Nogowski went 4 for 4 with a run for the Seminoles
(35-11). Mike Compton (5-1, 7.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, BB, 4 K) earned
the win, while Peter Miller fanned the final two hitters for his
first save. Dan Olinger went 2 for 4 with a double, one run and
one RBI for Minnesota.
No. 8 South Carolina 5, Georgia 2
In Athens, Ga., Grayson Greiner belted a two-run
homer and drew three walks as South Carolina evened its SEC
series at Georgia. Greiner went deep in the third to give the
Gamecocks (13-10, 35-12) a 2-1 advantage. Tanner English had an
RBI single in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie and give South
Carolina the lead for good. Jack Wynkoop (6-3, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R,
BB, 3 K) earned the win, while Joel Seddon fanned the final
batter of the game for his 13th save. Stephen Wrenn had three
hits and a run, while Zack Bowers went deep for the Bulldogs
(8-14-1, 22-23-1).
No. 9 Washington 11, Utah 1
In Salt Lake City, Trevor Mitsui went 3 for 4
with two runs and one RBI as Washington secured a Pac-12 series
win at Utah. The Huskies (18-5, 31-11-1) led 2-0 before scoring
nine over the final three innings. Alex Schmidt (2 for 4, 2 R)
homered for UW. Tyler Davis (10-1, 8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K)
was the winner. Konnor Armijo had two hits for the Utes (3-17,
13-27).
Alabama State 6, No. 10 Miami 5
In Coral Gables, Fla., Emmanuel Marrero doubled
and scored on an error in the eighth as Alabama State edged
Miami to even their series at one game apiece. Einar Muniz went
3 for 3 with two runs and one RBI, while Waldyvan Estrada had
two hits and two RBI for the Hornets (34-18). Normando Valentin
(4-0, 2.2 IP, H, 3 K) earned the victory. Willie Abreu went 2
for 3 with a run and two RBI for the Hurricanes (33-14).
No. 11 Louisville 3-3, USF 1-2 (Game 2 – 11
innings)
In Tampa, Fla., Cole Sturgeon had a leadoff
triple in the top of the 11th in the nightcap and scored on a
base hit by Jeff Gardner as Louisville swept an American
doubleheader from USF. Sturgeon finished with two hits and two
runs, while Gardner had two hits and two RBI. Sturgeon (3-0, 2.2
IP, H, BB, 3 K) also picked up the victory for the Cardinals
(13-4, 36-11), while Nick Burdi fanned one in a hitless 11th for
his 12th save. Luke Borders had two hits and one RBI for the
Bulls (10-10, 24-22). In Game 1, Kyle Funkhouser (9-2, 4 H, 5
BB, 8 K) tossed 7.1 scoreless innings to earn the win. Sturgeon
rolled a double play to work out of a jam in the eighth, and
Burdi (1 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 2 K) picked up the save. Grant Kay had
three hits and two runs for the Cardinals. Austin Leuck had two
hits for USF.
No. 12 Ole Miss 7, Arkansas 4
In Oxford, Miss., Sikes Orvis contributed to all
three Ole Miss scoring innings in securing an SEC series win
over Arkansas. Orvis (2 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBI) had a sacrifice fly
in the three-run first, singled and scored in a three-run
fourth, and homered in the fifth for the Rebels (15-8, 35-13).
Eric Fisher (3 for 4) had a two-run single to highlight a
four-run first for the Razorbacks (10-13, 29-20).
No. 13 Oklahoma State 6, Arizona State 5 (11)
In Stillwater, Okla., Oklahoma State scored
single runs in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings and
won it in the 11th in securing a series win over Arizona State.
Tim Arakawa (4 for 6) had RBI singles in the eighth and ninth
for the Cowboys (34-13) to tie it at 5-5. Donnie Walton (2 for
5) drove in the game-winner with a base hit in the 11th. Tanner
Krietemeier went 3 for 6 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for
OSU. Jake Peevyhouse had three hits, while Johnny Sewald had two
hits and two runs for the Sun Devils (24-19).
No. 14 Texas 2, West Virginia 0
In Morgantown, W.Va., three pitchers combined on
the shutout as Texas evened its Big 12 series at West Virginia.
Nathan Thornhill (4 IP, 7 H, BB, 3 K) was the starter for the
Longhorns (11-9, 34-14). Chad Hollingsworth (2-0, 2 IP, H, BB)
earned the win, while John Curtiss (3 IP, 3 H, K) recorded his
eighth save. Madison Carter had two hits and a run, while Zane
Gurwitz went 2 for 4 with one RBI for UT. Brad Johnson and
Cameron O’Brien both had three hits for the Mountaineers (8-8,
25-17).
No. 15 Indiana 7, Purdue 3
In Bloomington, Ind., Sam Travis and Scott Donley
both had two hits and two RBI as Indiana clinched a Big Ten
series with Purdue. Christian Morris (3-3, 5.1 IP, H, UE, 2 BB,
3 K) picked up the win. Kyle Wood went 2 for 3 with a run for
the Boilermakers (5-12, 12-31).
No. 17 Vanderbilt 5, Missouri 1
In Columbia, Mo., Carson Fulmer tossed six
scoreless innings and Zander Wiel had a two-run triple to
highlight a five-run third as Vanderbilt secured an SEC series
win over Missouri. Fulmer (3-1) allowed four hits and three
walks while striking out three. Hayden Stone surrendered a hit
and an unearned run over the final three frames with one walk
and five strikeouts to earn his second save for the Commodores
(13-10, 35-12). John Norwood went 3 for 3 with two doubles, two
steals and a run for Vanderbilt. Josh Lester had one hit and one
RBI for the Tigers (6-17, 20-26).
No. 18 Oregon 7, Arizona 6 (10)
In Eugene, Ore., Austin Grebeck delivered a
game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th as Oregon secured
a Pac-12 series win over Arizona. The Ducks (12-8, 33-13)
rallied for four in the seventh to knot the score at 6-6. Kyle
Garlick had a two-run triple in the seventh to make it 6-4 and
Steven Packard tied it with a two-run homer. Tyler Baumgartner
went 3 for 3 with one run and two RBI for Oregon. Jake Reed
(3-1, 2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) earned the win. Kevin Newman had three
hits and three runs for the Wildcats (7-16, 18-27).
No. 20 Houston 4, UCF 3
In Houston, Ashford Fulmer had a pinch-hit homer
with two away in the ninth to tie the game and Kyle Survance
added a game-winning RBI single later in the frame as Houston
tied its American series with UCF. Bubba Maxwell (3-0) pitched
two perfect innings with three strikeouts to register the
victory. James Vasquez had two hits and two RBI for the Knights
(16-4, 29-17).
Columbia 4, Penn 0
In Philadelphia, David Speer twirled a five-hit
shutout with nine strikeouts as Columbia won its playoff game at
Penn to determine the Gehrig Division title in the Ivy League.
Speer (6-2) walked two in pitching his third consecutive
shutout. He has hurled 23 straight scoreless innings. The Lions
(16-5, 25-15) scored single runs in the third and fourth while
putting up two in the sixth. Nick Maguire (2 for 4, 2 R) had a
double and a home run for Columbia. Michael Vilardo had two hits
for the Quakers (15-6, 24-17). The Lions will host the winner of
Sunday’s playoff game between Dartmouth and Yale for the Ivy
League Championship Series next weekend.
