Ely's Three-Run Double in 10th Lifts UW over Oregon

Cal Poly nips UCSB, Virginia blanks Pittsburgh, LSU lashes MSU

 

In Seattle, Andrew Ely laced a three-run double down the right field line with one away in the bottom of the 10th as No. 17 Washington captured a Pac-12 series win by defeating No. 12 Oregon 5-4 on Sunday. The Ducks (7-5, 22-10) plated a pair in the top of the frame to take a 4-2 advantage. Ely finished with two hits, while Braden Bishop scored twice for the Huskies (10-2, 22-6-1). No. 6 Cal Poly 1, No. 20 UC Santa Barbara 0 

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Casey Bloomquist fanned 10 over 7.2 scoreless innings as Cal Poly won its Big West series over UC Santa Barbara. Bloomquist (7-0) scattered five hits and did not allow a walk. Taylor Chris worked the final 1.1 innings for his fourth save. Jimmy Allen had an RBI triple in the fourth for the Mustangs (5-1, 26-5) for the game’s lone run. Robby Nesovic went 2 for 3 for the Gauchos (2-4, 20-7).

 

No. 1 Virginia 3, Pittsburgh 0

In Pittsburgh, Brandon Waddell allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings as Virginia won its ACC series at Pittsburgh. Waddell (4-1) did not walk a batter and struck out three. Nick Howard pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save. The Cavaliers (12-3, 27-5) scored one in the fourth and two insurance runs in the ninth. Mike Papi went 2 for 4 with a double and a run for Virginia. Stephen Vranka and Jordan Frabasilio both had hits for the Panthers (8-7, 16-15).

 

No. 13 LSU 17, No. 10 Mississippi State 4

In Baton Rouge, La., LSU scored multiple runs in five of the first six innings in pounding Mississippi State to sweep the SEC series. Mark Laird (3 for 4, 2 R, 4 RBI) had two doubles, while Kade Scivicque (3 for 5, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Christian Ibarra (3 for 3, 4 R) both homered for the Tigers (6-5-1, 24-8-1). Jake Vickerson went 3 for 4 with two runs for the Bulldogs (6-6, 20-13).

 

No. 2 Florida State 11-4, Notre Dame 2-3

In Tallahassee, Fla., John Nogowski homered twice in the opener as Florida State swept a doubleheader and ACC series from Notre Dame. Nogowski had three hits and drove in four. Jose Brizuela had two hits, including a double, and scored three for the Seminoles (13-2, 26-5). Mike Compton (3-0, 6 IP, 10 H, R, BB, 2 K) picked up the win. Conor Biggio and Kyle Fiala both had three hits for the Fighting Irish (1-14, 10-20). In the nightcap, Ben DeLuzio went 3 for 3 with a walk and two runs for FSU. Bryant Holtmann (5-0, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the victory, while Game Smith worked around a hit in the ninth for his first save. Ryan Bull had two hits and two RBI for Notre Dame.

 

Tennessee 7, No. 5 Vanderbilt 0

In Knoxville, Tenn., Kyle Serrano allowed two hits over 5.1 scoreless innings as Tennessee won its SEC series over Vanderbilt. Serrano (3-1) walked four and struck out three. Christin Stewart went 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs and three RBI, while Derek Lance homered for the Volunteers (5-7, 21-9). Vince Conde and Chris Harvey had hits for the Commodores (6-6, 26-7).

 

No. 7 Oregon State 2, Stanford 1

In Corvallis, Ore., Kavin Keyes had a two-run single in the bottom of the first as Oregon State completed a Pac-12 sweep of Stanford. Jace Fry (6-1, 7 IP, 10 H, R, 6 K) earned the victory, while Scott Schultz worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. Brett Michael Doran, Austin Slater and Zach Hoffpauir each had two hits for the Cardinal (3-6, 10-14).

 

No. 8 Louisville 8, Memphis 7 (12)

In Louisville, Ky., Will Smith capped a four-run ninth with an RBI double and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th as Louisville won its American series against Memphis. Smith went 2 for 2 off the bench with two RBI, while Zach Lucas had three hits and drove in a pair for the Cardinals (4-2, 23-8). Nick Burdi (2-0, 3 IP, BB, 5 K) earned the victory. Kane Barrow had two hits and two RBI for the Tigers (3-6, 18-14).

 

No. 9 Texas 4, Baylor 0

In Austin, Texas, Nathan Thornhill allowed two hits and struck out three in eight scoreless innings as Texas completed a Big 12 sweep of Baylor. Thornhill (5-0) faced two batters over the minimum in lowering his ERA to 0.73 – opponents are hitting .169 off of him. Tres Barrera had a two-run double as the Longhorns (6-3, 26-7) scored three in the seventh en route to their 11th win in 12 games. The Bears fell to 4-7, 15-16.

 

No. 11 Houston 2, Rutgers 1

In Piscataway, N.J. Tyler Ford and Chase Wellbrock combined for 6.2 innings of brilliant relief as Houston managed only three hits yet edged Rutgers to claim their AAC series. Ford allowed two hits and one earned run in 4.1 innigns, and Wellbrock (2-0) tossed the final 2.1 innings for the Cougars (4-2, 25-6). Frankie Ratcliff tripled and scored on Justin Montemayor’s single in the eighth for the game’s deciding run – Montemayor finished 2 for 4 with two RBI. Joe D’Annunzio went 2 for 4 with a run for the Scarlet Knights (3-5, 11-16).

 

East Carolina 2, No. 14 Rice 1

In Houston, Eric Tyler drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth as East Carolina scored twice in the frame to overcome Rice and claim their Conference USA series. With two outs, Ian Townsend doubled, and pinch hitter Bryce Harman walked after being down 0-2 for the Pirates (8-4, 19-13). Dylan Brown doubled in pinch-runner Ben Fultz to tie the game, and Tyler singled in pinch-runner Joshua Lovick. Ryan Williams (9-1) tossed 4.2 brilliant innings of relief with three hits and two strikeouts. Keenan Cook went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Owls (10-5, 22-12).

 

NC State 9, No. 15 Clemson 4

In Clemson, S.C., Trey Turner went 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI, and Andrew Knizner added three hits (two doubles and a solo homer) as NC State scored six times in the ninth to top Clemson to even their ACC series and end a 10-game league losing streak. D.J. Thomas (2-0) tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, and Eric Peterson finished with two innings for his second save. Brett Austin added two hits and two RBI for the Wolfkpack (4-10, 18-12). Weston Wilson had two hits and two RBI for the Tigers (9-4, 20-10).

 

Kentucky 9, No. 16 Florida 8

In Lexington, Ky., Max Kuhn had a three-run homer in a seven-run sixth innings, and A.J. Reed went 3 for 4 with his third homer in as many games as Kentucky claimed its SEC series with Florida. The Wildcats (6-6, 22-10) pounded out 18 hits on the day, with Kyle Barrett and Thomas Bernal contributing three apiece. The Gators (7-5, 20-12) scored five times in the eighth – three coming on Peter Alonso’s homer – to get within one. Richie Martin added three hits and three RBI for Florida.

 

No. 19 Cal State Fullerton 9, UC Davis 1

In Fullerton, Calif., Matt Chapman had a three-run homer in the third to spark Cal State Fullerton past UC Davis to win the Big West series. Keegan Dale (2 for 3) also drove in three for the Titans (2-1, 16-11). Phil Bickford (3-1, 6 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 K) earned the victory. Nick Lynch doubled for the Aggies (1-5, 14-14).
