Mattson Scores Three as UF Completes Sweep of LSU

Virginia tops Virginia Tech, South Carolina blanks Tennessee

 

In Gainesville, Fla., Braden Mattson went 2 for 3 with two walks and three runs as Florida completed a three-game SEC sweep of sixth-ranked LSU with an 11-7 win Sunday in front of 4,012 fans at McKethan Stadium. The Gators (6-3, 19-9) erased a 4-2 deficit with four in the third and added another four in the fifth. John Sternagel went 1 for 2 with three RBI, while Harrison Bader homered for Florida. Kirby Snead (1-0, 4.2 IP, 2 H, BB) earned the win in relief. Chris Sciambra and Sean McMullen both went deep for the Tigers (3-5-1, 20-8-1).

 

No. 2 Virginia 7, Virginia Tech 4

In Charlottesville, Va., Mike Papi went 2 for 4 with three runs as Virginia completed the ACC sweep of Virginia Tech in front of 3,730 fans at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (10-2, 23-4) erased a 4-3 deficit with four in the seventh. Whit Mayberry (3-1, 1.2 IP, 3 H, UE, 3 K) got the win, while Nick Howard worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth for this eighth save. Alex Perez went 4 for 5 with one run and one RBI for the Hokies (5-7, 12-12-1).

 

No. 3 South Carolina 8, No. 20 Tennessee 0

In Columbia, S.C., Wil Crowe and Cody Mincey combined on the shutout as South Carolina completed the three-game SEC sweep of Tennessee in front of a crowd of 8,242 at Carolina Stadium. Crowe (6-0) allowed eight hits over 7.1 innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Mincey walked one and fanned three over the final 1.2 innings. Elliott Caldwell, Joey Pankake, Grayson Greiner and Tanner English each had two hits and two RBI for the Gamecocks (6-3, 24-3). Tyler Schultz went 2 for 3 for the Volunteers (3-6, 19-7).

 

No. 4 Louisiana-Lafayette 7, Western Kentucky 4

In Lafayette, La., Jace Conrad belted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 3-3 tie as Louisiana-Lafayette won its Sun Belt series with Western Kentucky in front of 3,712 fans at Tigue Moore Field. Seth Harrison also homered and drove in three for the Ragin’ Cajuns (8-1, 26-3). Connor Toups (1-0, 4.1 IP, 3 H, R, BB) got the win in relief. Ryan Messex went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI for the Hilltoppers (4-5, 14-14).

 

No. 5 Vanderbilt 6, No. 19 Kentucky 2

In Nashville, Tenn., John Norwood smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth as Vanderbilt took the lead for good in winning its SEC series against Kentucky. Vince Conde went 2 for 2 and knocked in a pair for the Commodores (5-4, 22-7). Tyler Ferguson (5-0, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K) earned the win, while Carson Fulmer (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 K) registered his eighth save. JaVon Shelby went 3 for 3 with a double and a run for the Wildcats (4-5, 19-9).

 

No. 7 Oregon State 11, Arizona 0

In Tucson, Ariz., Jace Fry worked seven hitless innings as Oregon State won its Pac-12 series at Arizona in front of 2,307 fans at Hi Corbett Field. Fry (5-1) allowed a leadoff single to Willie Calhoun to open the eighth and immediately departed. Fry walked two and struck out five. Scott Schultz (2 IP, 3 H, K) completed the shutout for the Beavers (6-3, 21-6). OSU scored four in the top of the first and never looked back. Kavin Keyes had two hits, including a triple, and three RBI, while Michael Conforto went 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBI for the Beavers. Zach Gibbons went 1 for 3 for the Wildcats (2-7, 12-18).

 

No. 8 Cal Poly 9, UC Davis 1

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Mark Mathias went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs in extending his hitting streak to 17 games, and Casey Bloomquist yielded one unearned run over eight innings as Cal Poly completed a Big West sweep of UC Davis. The Mustangs (3-0, 23-4) have now won 23 of 24 at home and have gone 12-0 at home since 2008 against the Aggies (0-3, 12-12), who entered the series having won 8 of 10. Bloomquist (6-0) allowed four hits and struck out six. Adam Young went 2 for 4 with an RBI for UC Davis.

In Stanford, Calif., Tyler Baumgartner had a two-run single to highlight a seven-run second as Oregon salvaged the finale of its Pac-12 series at Stanford. Baumgartner finished with two hits and three RBI for the Ducks (6-3, 19-8). Jeff Gold (7-0, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the victory. Austin Slater homered for the Cardinal (3-3, 10-11).

 

Wichita State 4, No. 10 Cal State Fullerton 2

In Wichita, Kan., Chase Simpson went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI as Wichita State claimed a series win over Cal State Fullerton in front of 3,114 fans at Eck Stadium. Sam Tewes (4-1, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, K) earned the victory, while Aaron LaBrie fanned two in the ninth for his first save for the Shockers (16-10). Greg Velazquez and Timmy Richards both had two hits, while Tanner Pinkston homered for the Titans (14-10).

 

Middle Tennessee 8, No. 11 Rice 5

In Murfreesboro, Tenn., Dustin Delgado had a two-run single to highlight a five-run fifth as Middle Tennessee clinched a Conference USA series win over Rice. Delgado finished with three hits and two runs, while Hank LaRue went 3 for 4 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Blue Raiders (7-5, 12-14). Johnathan Frebis (2-3, 6 IP, 6 H, R, 4 BB, 4 K) earned the victory, while Garrett Ring (1.2 IP, 3 H, R) notched his first save. Michael Aquino had three hits and a run for the Owls (9-3, 21-9).

 

No. 12 Louisville 12, Xavier 3

In Louisville, Ky., Cole Sturgeon and Jeff Gardner each drove in three runs as Louisville completed a sweep of Xavier. Anthony Kidston tossed a season-best six innings with one run, two hits and seven strikeouts for the Cardinals (21-6). Sturgeon went 2 for 5 with a triple and three runs, and Gardner went 2 for 4 with a double for Louisville. The Musketeers fell to 13-13.

 

Alabama 3, No. 13 Ole Miss 1

In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Jon Keller went the distance with eight strikeouts as Alabama finished the SEC sweep of Ole Miss in front of 3,575 fans at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Keller (5-1) scattered seven hits with three walks and one run. Mikey White homered to spark a three-run fourth for the Crimson Tide (6-3, 19-8). Will Allen and Sikes Orvis both had two hits for the Rebels (4-5, 21-8).

 

No. 14 Mississippi State 5, Arkansas 1

In Starkville, Miss., Alex Detz homered and drove in three as Mississippi State won its SEC series against Arkansas in front of a crowd of 7,766 at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs (6-3, 20-10) scored in the first on a two-run homer by Detz and never trailed. Jake Vickerson went 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs for MSU. Jacob Lindgren (3-0, 4 IP, H, 8 K) registered the win in relief, while Jonathan Holder (1.2 IP, H, 3 K) earned his fourth save. Brian Anderson had two hits and one RBI for the Razorbacks (4-5, 17-10).

In Lubbock, Texas, Madison Carter went 3 for 6 and had an RBI single to spark a three-run 12th as Texas won its Big 12 series at Texas Tech. Ben Johnson had three hits and two runs, while C.J. Hinojosa went 3 for 5 with a walk for the Longhorns (3-3, 22-7). John Curtiss (1-0, 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K) earned the victory. Alex Humphreys had two hits and one RBI for the Red Raiders (4-5, 22-9), who scored both their runs in the bottom of the ninth.

In Houston, Casey Grayson went 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBI as Houston downed Memphis to capture their American series. The Cougars (2-1, 22-5) snapped a 2-2 tie with a run in the seventh and added three insurance runs in the eighth. Kyle Survance and Jordan Stading both had two hits and two runs for Houston. Chase Wellbrock (1-0, 2.2 IP, H, 3 K) got the win in relief. Tucker Tubbs had a two-run homer in the sixth for the Tigers (2-4, 16-11).

 

Hawaii 12, No. 17 UC Santa Barbara 4

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Marc Flores had a two-run homer in the first and a two-run double to highlight an eight-run fourth as Hawaii won its Big West series at UC Santa Barbara. Juliene Jones (2 R, 2 RBI) and Trevor Podratz (2 R, RBI) both had three hits for the Rainbows (2-1, 14-13). Jarrett Arakawa (2-0, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER) earned the victory, with Scott Kuzminsky (3 IP, 3 H, 2 UE, 3 K) recording his first save. Robby Nesovic went 2 for 3 with a double and a run for the Gauchos (1-2, 19-5).

 

Arizona State 6, No. 18 UCLA 5 (10)

In Los Angeles, RJ Ybarra had a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the 10th as Arizona State edged UCLA to win the Pac-12 series. The Sun Devils (5-4, 15-11) scored in the ninth to force the extra frame. Jake Peevyhouse and Christopher Beall both had two hits and a run, while Brian Serven homered for ASU. Ryan Burr (2-2, 2.2 IP, H, BB, 5 K) registered the win. Kevin Williams drove in a pair for the Bruins (6-3, 16-10).

 

Duke 6, North Carolina 4

In Durham, N.C., Aaron Cohn went 1 for 4 with two RBI as Duke swept a three-game series from North Carolina for the first time in 20 years. The Blue Devils (7-5, 17-12) used a three-run fifth to erase a 3-2 deficit. Grant McCabe went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI for Duke. Conner Stevens (1-0, 2 IP, 2 H, R, BB) picked up the win in relief, while Nick Hendrix (2 IP, H, R BB) recorded his first save. Michael Russell had two hits and two RBI for the Tar Heels (5-7, 15-12).
