Florida State nips UCF

South Carolina blanks Furman, Virginia jolts James Madison

 

In Orlando, Fla., second-ranked Florida State erased 9-6 deficit with three in the seventh and two in the eighth to outscore UCF 11-10 Tuesday in front of a record-crowd of 3,953 at Jay Bergman Field. Brett Knief went 3 for 5 with two doubles and four runs, while John Nogowski drove in three for the Seminoles (13-2). Erik Barber had three hits and knocked in four for the Knights (7-10).

 

South Carolina 5, Furman 0

In Columbia, S.C., Elliott Caldwell went 3 for 4 with two RBI as South Carolina took care of Furman in front of 7,174 fans at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks (16-0) plated one in the first and two in the second to start the scoring. Kyle Martin went deep for South Carolina. Taylor Widener (1-0, 3.1 IP, H, 2 BB) was the starter and winner as the Gamecocks posted their fourth consecutive shutout and ninth overall. Jordan Simpson had two hits for the Paladins (6-10).

 

No. 3 Virginia 13, James Madison 2

In Charlottesville, Va., Mike Papi homered twice and drove in three as Virginia thumped James Madison in front of 3,112 fans at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (12-3) used an eight-run third to snap a 1-1 tie. Branden Cogswell went 3 for 4 with two hits and three RBI, while Daniel Pinero had three hits and knocked in two for Virginia. Connor Jones (1-0, 4 IP, 3 H, R, 2 K) earned the victory. Kevin Husum drove in both runs for the Dukes (7-9).

 

No. 4 Vanderbilt 11, Eastern Illinois 2

In Nashville, Tenn., Vanderbilt scored eight runs with two away in the fifth on its way to a win over Eastern Illinois. Rhett Wiseman (2 for 5, 3 RBI) and Jason Delay (2 for 3) both had two-run singles in the outburst for the Commodores (16-2). Walker Buehler (3-1, 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R) fanned seven in picking up the win. Frankie Perrone (2 for 4) homered for the Panthers (3-13).

 

No. 5 Oregon State 4, Ohio State 3

In Corvallis, Ore., Dylan Davis delivered an RBI single in the fifth to snap a 3-3 tie as Oregon State edged Ohio State in front of 2,627 fans at Goss Stadium. Troy Montgomery had a two-run double to cap a three-run first for the Buckeyes (8-6). The Beavers (15-3) answered with three in the second. Mak Fox (1-0, 3.2 IP, 4 H) earned the win in relief, while Trent Shelton (2 IP, H, BB, K) recorded his second save.

 

No. 6 NC State 6, Stetson 1

In DeLand, Fla., Jake Fincher and Jake Armstrong both drove in two as NC State won at Stetson. The Wolfpack (14-2) scored three in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Andrew Woeck (3-0, 3.2 IP, BB, 6 K) earned the win in relief. Kevin Fagan had two hits, while Kyle Pitts drove in the lone run for the Hatters (5-12).

 

No. 7 LSU 5, Nicholls 3

In Baton Rouge, La., Jared Foster doubled and scored twice as LSU edged Nicholls. Brady Domangue (2-0, 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, BB, 2 K) registered the win, while Joe Broussard pitched a hitless ninth for his third save. Darius Knight went 3 for 3 with two runs, while Tyler Duplantis had two hits and two RBI for the Colonels (8-9).

 

San Diego 5, No. 8 Cal State Fullerton 3 (10)

In San Diego, Troy Conyers belted a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th as San Diego edged Cal State Fullerton. The Toreros (11-4) plated a pair in the eighth to knot the score at 3-3. Tanner Pinkston had three hits for the Titans (8-6), who have lost three straight.
