South Carolina Rallies past Stetson

FSU wins at USF, Vanderbilt edges MTSU, NC State tops NCA&T

 

In Columbia, S.C., Weber Pike had a two-run single with two outs as third-ranked South Carolina scored four times in the seventh inning to overcome Stetson 4-2 Wednesday and remain unbeaten. Joey Pankake and Connor Bright drove in runs before Pike singled to center on an 0-2 pitch. Hunter Privette earned his first win with an inning of scoreless relief, and Joel Seddon (pictured) posted his fourth save with a scoreless ninth for the Gamecocks (12-0). No. 1 Florida State 4, USF 1

In Tampa, Fla., Bryant Holtmann pitched four scoreless innings in relief as Florida State completed a two-game sweep at USF. Holtmann (2-0) allowed two hits and one walk. Jameis Winston, the fifth hurler for FSU, worked a hitless ninth to notch his second save. Winston was also the DH, going 1 for 4 with a double, a run and one RBI. DJ Stewart had two hits, two walks and one run for the Seminoles (10-1). Kyle Teaf had two hits and a run for the Bulls (9-4).

 

No. 5 Vanderbilt 4, Middle Tennessee 3

In Murfreesboro, Tenn., Vanderbilt scored twice in each of the first two innings and held on to win at Middle Tennessee. Leadoff hitter Dansby Swanson had two hits, two walks and two runs for the Commodores (12-2). TJ Pecoraro (1-0, 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) was the starter and winner. John Lilichowski (3 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K) worked the middle three innings and Carson Fulmer (3 IP, H, 4 K) recorded his fourth save. The Blue Raiders (4-7) scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Jared Allen had three hits and two RBI for MTSU.

 

No. 7 NC State 17, North Carolina A&T 4

In Raleigh, N.C., Andrew Knizner went 3 for 4 with a homer and five RBI, and NC State erupted for 10 runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie in a win over North Carolina A&T. Logan Ratledge went 4 for 5 with three RBI, and Kyle Cavanaugh had three RBI for the Wolfpack (10-2). Brandon Mitchell went 3 for 4 with a run for the Aggies (6-4).

 

No. 8 LSU 8, Sacred Heart 1

In Baton Rouge, La., Chris Chinea drove in a pair of runs and four LSU relievers combined to allow two hits over six scoreless innings as the Tigers beat Sacred Heart. Andrew Stevenson went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Alex Bregman contributed two hits and a run for the Tigers (10-2). Jayson Sullivan went 2 for 4 with a solo home run for the Pioneers (2-2).

 

No. 10 Mississippi State 3, South Alabama 0

In Starkville, Miss., Ross Mitchell tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to improve to 18-0 (all out of relief) in his career as Mississippi State blanked South Alabama. Mitchell (2-0) allowed three hits and struck out two, and Jacob Lindgren picked up his first save with 1.2 innings. Alex Detz went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI, including a solo homer in the third as the Bulldogs (11-4) won despite totaling only five hits. Hayden Jones went 3 for 4 for South Alabama (5-7).

 

No. 16 North Carolina 10, Davidson 3

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Reilly Hovis allowed two hits and struck out five in three scoreless innings, and North Carolina scored eight runs in its final three at-bats to break away from Davidson. Joe Dudek drove in a pair of runs, and Landon Lassiter and Adam Pate each scored twice for the Tar Heels (8-3), who have won seven in a row. Ryan Lowe went 3 for 4 for the Wildcats (3-6).

 

No. 20 Rice 8, Sam Houston State 5

In Huntsville, Texas, Michael Aquino had two hits and two RBI to lead Rice past Sam Houston State. The Owls (8-5) used a four-run fifth to snap a 2-2 tie, capped by a two-run single off the bat of Connor Teykl. Chase McDowell (1-1, 6.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Austin Orewiler pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. Hayden Simerly went 3 for 3 with two walks and a run, while Carter Burgess added two hits and two RBI for the Bearkats (10-3).
