Canisius wins first
MAAC title in program history

MAAC
#3 Canisius 12, #4 Siena 11
In Trenton, N.J., Jose Torralba was hit by a
pitch with the bases loaded and two away in the bottom of the
ninth to force in the game-winner as Canisius outscored Siena to
capture its first MAAC title and a bid to its first NCAA
Division I Tournament. The Golden Griffins (42-15) led 10-3
after six before the Saints (27-30) put up six in the seventh to
pull within one. After Canisius added one in the bottom of the
seventh, Siena tied it with a pair in the top of the ninth.
Torralba went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI, while
Connor Panas added four hits and three RBI for the victors. Mike
Allen went 4 for 4 with three RBI, while Larry Balkwill was 2
for 5 with a double, a homer, three runs and three RBI for
Siena. Canisius set a program and MAAC record with 42 victories.

ACC
#1 North Carolina 4, #6 Virginia Tech 1
In Durham, N.C., Landon Lassiter went 2 for 3
with three runs as North Carolina downed Virginia Tech to win
the ACC Championship in front of 8,697 fans at Durham Bulls
Athletic Park. Skye Bolt drove in a pair for the Tar Heels
(52-8). Taylore Cherry (1-0, 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB) earned the
victory, while Trevor Kelley (4 IP, 1 H, 2 K) recorded his
second save. Tyler Horan went 1 for 4 with a double and a run
for the Hokies (38-20).
SEC
#2 LSU 5, #1 Vanderbilt 4 (11)
In Hoover, Ala., Chris Sciambra delivered a
pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the 11th as LSU edged
Vanderbilt to capture the SEC title. Chris Cotton (4-1), the
tourney MVP, retired the final eight hitters, including the
three in the bottom of the 11th. Jared Foster went 2 for 3 with
two runs and one RBI for the Tigers (52-9). Vince Conde had
three hits and three RBI, while Conner Harrell and Conrad Gregor
both had two hits and two runs for the Commodores (51-9).
America East
#2 Binghamton 4, #1 Maine 0
In Kingston, R.I., Jake Lambert, the tourney’s
Most Outstanding Player, pitched eight scoreless innings as
Binghamton blanked Maine to earn its second America East title.
Lambert (7-2) allowed five hits and one walk with seven
strikeouts. Mike Urbanski got the final three outs for his
second save. Daniel Nevares had two hits and two RBI for the
Bearcats (30-23). Eric White went 2 for 4 for the Black Bears
(37-22).
Atlantic Sun
#4 ETSU 7, #7 Kennesaw State 2
#7 Kennesaw State 4, #3 North Florida 2 (UNF
eliminated)
In DeLand, Fla., Kerry Doane tossed his second
complete game of the tournament as ETSU defeated Kennesaw State
to claim the A-Sun title. Doane (13-1), The Atlantic Sun Pitcher
of the Year, allowed four hits and one earned run with three
walks and three strikeouts. The Bucs (36-22) scored in five of
the first seven innings. Jeremy Taylor drove in two, while Dylan
Tritsch and Derek Niesman both had three hits for ETSU. Kal
Simmons had two hits and a run for the Owls (30-30).
Max Pentecost went 2 for 4 with a double and two
RBI as Kennesaw State eliminated North Florida and advanced to
the title game. Bo Way had three hits and a run for the Owls.
Drew Weeks had two hits and a run for the Ospreys (40-19).
Big East
#8 Connecticut 8, #7 Notre Dame 1
In Clearwater, Fla., Anthony Marzi went the
distance, allowing four hits and one run, as Connecticut won its
first Big East title since 1994. Marzi walked a pair and fanned
six. LJ Mazzilli went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two
RBI, while Vinny Siena was 4 for 5 with one RBI for the Huskies
(34-26). UConn head coach Jim Penders becomes first person to
win championship as a player (1994) and coach. Trey Mancini went
2 for 4 with a home run for the Irish (34-24).
Big Ten
#1 Indiana 4, #3 Nebraska 3
In Minneapolis, Scott Donley delivered a
game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as Indiana
edged Nebraska to claim the Big Ten title. The Hoosiers (43-14)
snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair in the sixth before the Huskers
(29-30) tallied single runs in the seventh and eighth to knot
the score at 3. Sam Travis had two doubles, one run and one RBI
for IU. Will Coursen-Carr (3-0) went the distance for the
Hoosiers, allowing eight hits and three runs with three walks
and three strikeouts. Pat Kelly had two hits and two RBI for
Nebraska. Indiana will make its third trip to the NCAA
Tournament and first since 2009.
Big 12
#4 Oklahoma 7, #6 Kansas 2
In Oklahoma City, Matt Oberste went 2 for 4 with
a homer and four RBI as Oklahoma defeated Kansas to win the Big
12 Championship. The Sooners (40-19) scored three in the top of
the first and never trailed. Max White scored twice for OU.
Jacob Evans (7-2, 5 IP, 4 H, R, BB, K) earned the win in relief,
while Kyle Hayes (1.2 IP, BB, K) notched his second save. Connor
McKay had two hits for the Jayhawks (34-25).
Conference USA
#1 Rice 5, #2 Southern Miss 4 (11)
In Houston, Keenan Cook ripped a game-winning RBI
single in the bottom of the 11th as Rice edged Southern Miss to
win the Conference USA crown. The Owls (41-17) will make their
19th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Ford
Stainback had two hits and two runs for Rice. Zech Lemond (5-1,
6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 UE, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the victory. Blake Brown
had three hits, including a double, and one RBI for the Golden
Eagles (30-27).
Horizon
#3 Valparaiso 3, #4 Wright State 0
In Niles, Ohio, Dalton Lundeen allowed two hits
in eight scoreless innings as Valparaiso defeated Wright State
to capture the Horizon League Championship. Lundeen (5-1) did
not walk a batter and struck out six. Karch Kowalczyk worked a
hitless ninth for his 12th save. The Crusaders (30-20) scored
all their runs in the first as Chris Manning delivered a two-run
double and scored on a triple by Spencer Mahoney. Cody Gardner
had both hits for the Raiders (24-30).
MAC
#6 Bowling Green 7, #4 Ball State 0
In Avon, Ohio, Nick Bruns tossed a four-hit
shutout as Bowling Green downed Ball State to earn its first MAC
title since 1999. Bruns (6-2) walked one and struck out four,
needing just 94 pitches to complete the game. Bruns, the MAC
Tournament MVP, had two wins and a save this week with no earned
runs allowed. The Falcons (24-29) scored all their runs in the
top of the fifth. Logan Walker went 2 for 2 with a double and an
RBI for BGSU. Billy Wellman was 1 for 3 with a walk for the
Cardinals (31-24).
Mountain West
#3 San Diego State 9, #1 New Mexico 4
In Fresno. Calif., Tyler France went 4 for 4 with
three runs and three RBI as San Diego State stopped New Mexico
to claim the Mountain West crown. France was a triple short of
the cycle. Greg Allen and Matt Munoz both had three hits, while
Jake Romanski had two hits, including a dinger, and three RBI
for the Aztecs (31-29). Josh Melendez went 2 for 3 with three
runs for the Lobos (37-20).
NEC
#1 Bryant 8, #2 Sacred Heart 0
In Lakewood, N.J., Kevin McAvoy hurled a
three-hit shutout as Bryant came through the losers’ bracket to
defeat Sacred Heart and win the NEC title. McAvoy (7-2) walked
two and struck out a pair. Kevin Brown went 2 for 3 with a homer
and two runs for the Bulldogs (44-16-1). Brian Lamboy, Dan Perez
and Jayson Sullivan each had a hit for the Pioneers (34-24).
Southern
#3 Elon 6, #4 The Citadel 5
In Greenville, S.C., Elon built an early lead and
held on to defeat The Citadel in winning the Southern Conference
Championship in front of 1,432 fans at Fluor Field. The Phoenix
(32-28) led 6-1 after three before the Bulldogs (35-25) put up
two in the fifth and two in the seventh to cut it to one.
Spencer Medick (2 H, BB) fanned five over the final 2.2 innings
to save it for starter Kyle Webb (7-3, 6.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5
K). Sebastian Gomez had two hits and two RBI, while Alex Swim
had two hits and two runs for Elon. Hughston Armstrong had three
hits and three runs, while Tyler Griffin doubled twice and drove
in three for The Citadel. Joe Jackson went 3 for 4 with a
double, two runs and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
Summit
#1 South Dakota State 1, #3 North Dakota State

In Rochester, Mich., tourney MVP Daniel Telford
had an RBI double in the top of the first and South Dakota State
edged North Dakota State to win the Summit championship and
advance to its first NCAA Division I regional. Shane Kraemer
(4-2, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 K) earned the win, while Layne Somsen (2
IP, H, 4 K) registered his first save for the Jackrabbits
(35-22). Wes Salzinger and Blake Turbak both had two hits for
the Bison (26-27).
In the earlier game, Kolton Emery (4-5, 7 H, 5 K)
tossed 7.2 scoreless innings as South Dakota State forced a
winner-take-all title game with North Dakota State. J.D. Moore
(1.1 IP, 3 K) recorded his 13th save. Aaron Machbitz had two
hits and one RBI for the Jackrabbits. Blake Turbak went 1 for 4
with a double for the Bison.
Sun Belt
#4 Florida Atlantic 16, #3 Louisiana-Lafayette

In Lafayette, La., Florida Atlantic scored nine
in the top of the second and cruised past host
Louisiana-Lafayette to capture its first Sun Belt title. Tyler
Rocklein had two hits and four RBI, while Brendon Sanger added
two hits and three RBI for the Owls (39-20). Dez Kjerstad went 3
for 4 with a homer and two runs for the Ragin’ Cajuns (41-18).
WAC
#4 UTSA 11, #7 Dallas Baptist 4
In Grand Prairie, Texas, John Bormann went 3 for
5 with a double, two runs and two RBI as UTSA downed Dallas
Baptist to claim the WAC crown. The Roadrunners (35-23) trailed
2-0 before scoring multiple runs in each of their final four
at-bats, including five in the bottom of the eighth. Riley Good
was 1 for 5 with a double and two RBI for UTSA. Brock Hartson
(9-4, 7.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) got the win, while
Logan Onda (1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R) recorded his second save. Austin
Listi homered, scored twice and drove in a pair for the Patriots
(30-30).
