Hutting helps Cal State
Fullerton defeat UCLA
Vanderbilt downs Belmont, UNC blanks ASU,
LSU smacks New Orleans
In Fullerton, Calif., Anthony Hutting belted a
three-run homer in the bottom of the first as fourth-ranked Cal
State Fullerton downed No. 10 UCLA 5-2 Tuesday in front of a
crowd of 2,738 at Goodwin Field. Matt Chapman went 2 for 2 with
two runs and one RBI for the Titans (42-8). David Birosak (1-0,
2.1 IP, H) picked up the win in relief, while Michael Lorenzen
worked around a hit in a scoreless ninth for his 16th save. Eric
Filia and Chris Keck both had one hit and one RBI for the Bruins
(34-15).
No. 1 Vanderbilt 6, Belmont 1
In Nashville, Tenn., Kyle Smith homered and drove
in three as Vanderbilt got past Belmont at Hawkins Field. Tony
Kemp had three hits and two RBI for the Commodores (46-6), who
tied the program record for wins in a season. Kemp had a triple,
the 21st of his career, to tie the SEC record set by Brian Duva
of Florida. Philip Pfeifer (3-0, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K) tossed six
scoreless innings to earn the victory. Neil Hickman went 1 for 1
with a double, while Drew Ferguson went 1 for 3 with two walks
and a run for the Bruins (36-16).
No. 2 North Carolina 2, Appalachian State 0
In Chapel Hill, N.C., Reilly Hovis and two
relievers combined on a one-hit shutout as North Carolina took
care of Appalachian State in front of 2,024 fans at Boshamer
Stadium. Hovis (2-0) allowed one hit and three walks with three
strikeouts to pick up the win. Chris McCue (2 BB, 5 K) worked
three innings before Chris Munnelly (1 BB, 2 K) recorded his
first save. Mike Zolk went 2 for 2 with a walk and a run, while
Cody Stubbs tripled and scored for the Tar Heels (46-6). Will
Callaway had the lone hit for the Mountaineers (27-20).
No. 3 LSU 11, New Orleans 2
In Baton Rouge, La., Sean McMullen tripled and
scored to spark a five-run first as LSU thumped New Orleans in
front of 5,534 fans at Alex Box Stadium. McMullen (2 for 3, 2 R,
2 RBI) also doubled for the Tigers (46-7), who had won 27
straight against state schools and 34 consecutive non-conference
midweek contests. Mark Laird added two hits and two RBI, while
Michael Barash homered for LSU. Hunter Newman (2-0, 5 IP, H, BB,
3 K) earned the win. Zach Liberto had two hits for the
Privateers (7-41).
No. 6 Virginia 17, VCU 3
In Charlottesville, Va., Joe McCarthy had four
hits and four RBI to lead Virginia past VCU as 3,162 looked on
at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (43-8) scored four in the
first and added five in the sixth and four in the seventh to
finish the season with a 32-3 home record. Nick Howard (2 for 4,
HR) and Jared King (1 for 3, 2 BB) both drove in three, while
Mike Papi had three hits and three runs for UVa. Whit Mayberry
(4-0, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R) was credited with the win. Trevor Marino
went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI for the Rams (25-26).
No. 8 Oregon 4, Gonzaga 3
In Eugene, Ore., Ryan Hambright delivered a
game-winning RBI single with two away in the bottom of the ninth
as Oregon edged Gonzaga at PK Park. The Ducks (41-11) scored all
their runs in the final four frames. The Bulldogs (32-17-1)
trailed 3-2 before an RBI double by Cory Lebrun in the top of
the eighth. Garrett Cleavinger (8-0, 1.2 IP, 2 BB, 3 K) got the
win.
No. 11 Louisville 6, Ohio State 3
In Columbus, Ohio, Coco Johnson homered twice and
drove in five as Louisville powered past Ohio State at Bill
Davis Stadium for its 13th straight win. Johnson had a three-run
bomb in the first and a two-run shot in the fifth as the
Cardinals (43-10) built a 6-0 lead. Troy Kuhn and Kirby Pellant
both had two hits and a run for the Buckeyes (33-19).
