Mengden, Jester pitch Texas A&M past LSU

UNCW downs W&M, USF beats BYU, UVU knocks off NYIT

 

In College Station, Texas, Daniel Mengden allowed five hits and one run over eight innings as Texas A&M nipped No. 3 LSU 2-1 Thursday in the SEC series opener in front of a crowd of 4,103 at Blue Bell Park. The start was delayed nearly two hours by weather and play was stopped twice for a total of 26 minutes. Mengden (6-3) did not walk a batter and struck out five. Jason Jester pitched a perfect ninth with one punchout for his 13th save, tying the single-season program record. The Tigers (19-6, 43-7) snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth as Raph Rhymes (2 for 4, 2B) singled and scored on a double by Alex Bregman (2 for 4, 2 2B). The Aggies (11-13, 27-22) answered with a pair in the seventh. Brandon Wood (1 for 4) had a leadoff single and Jonathan Moroney (1 for 3, BB) reached on an error. Krey Bratsen (2 for 2) had a bunt single and Wood scored on a throwing error on the play. Mikey Reynolds (1 for 4) delivered a base hit to plate Moroney with the go-ahead run.

 

UNC Wilmington 7, William & Mary 2

In Wilmington, N.C., Mat Batts went the distance for the fifth time as UNCW took the CAA series lid-lifter from William & Mary at Brooks Field. Bats (9-2) allowed eight hits and two runs with two walks and nine strikeouts. The first-place Seahawks (16-5, 35-15) scored in four of the first five frames, including two in the fourth and three in the fifth. Tyler Molinaro had two hits and two RBI, while Michael Bass and Matt Keeler both added a pair of hits and two runs for UNCW. Ryan Lindemuth went 3 for 3 with a homer and two RBI for the Tribe (14-8, 31-18).

 

San Francisco 10, BYU 1

In Provo, Utah, Abe Bobb pitched a complete game as San Francisco bounced BYU to begin their WCC series. Bobb (5-5) surrendered eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts. The lone run for the Cougars (10-9, 24-19) came on a homer by Adam Law (2 for 4) in the bottom of the ninth. The Dons (15-7, 31-19) had four multiple-run innings, plating three in the third and fourth before adding two in the sixth and eighth. Zachary Turner (3 for 4, 2 R) homered and drove in five, while Bradley Zimmer (3 for 3, 3 2B, 4 R) knocked in three for USF.

 

Utah Valley 12, NYIT 3

In Orem, Utah, Greyson Bogden collected four hits as Utah Valley thumped NYIT to kick off their Great West series at Brent Brown Ballpark. Willie Pratt (2 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) homered to spark a four-run fifth as the Wolverines (12-5, 21-24) built a 6-1 lead. UVU put the game away with a six-run eighth. Mark Krueger and Riley White both had three hits and two RBI for the Wolverines, with Krueger going deep for the first time. Devin Nelson (4-4, 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 5 K) earned the victory, while Justin Campbell (3 IP, 3 H, 4 K) notched his first save. Ali Rodriguez had three hits and two runs for the Bears (7-14, 9-39).

 

UMBC 6, Coppin State 0

In Baltimore, Md., Riley Stephenson and Cam Maxey combined on the four-hit shutout as UMBC blanked Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium. Stephenson (2-7) allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings with two strikeouts. Maxey tossed two hitless frames with two punchouts. The Retrievers (14-27) put up three in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Kevin LaChance went 4 for 5 with one RBI to lead the victors. Jack Kraft had two hits, including a triple, for the Eagles (16-31).
