Lassiter leads North
Carolina past James Madison
NC State downs UNCW, FSU wins at Stetson,
Northridge upsets UCLA
In Chapel Hill, N.C., Landon Lassiter went 3 for
3 with two doubles, two walks, two runs and three RBI to lead
top-ranked North Carolina past James Madison 9-5 Tuesday. The
Tar Heels (43-4) scored four in the first and built a 7-0 lead
before the Dukes (20-24) put up five in the seventh. Cody Stubbs
also knocked in three for UNC. Hobbs Johnson (4-0, 5 IP, H, 5
BB, 4 K) picked up the win, while Trent Thornton (1.2 IP, H, K)
recorded his fourth save. Bradley Shaban had two hits and two
RBI for JMU, which stranded 12.
No. 6 NC State 7, UNC Wilmington 2
In Raleigh, N.C., Logan Ratledge had two hits and
two RBI as NC State topped UNCW at Doak Field. The Wolfpack
(38-11) scored six over the first three innings, with five
unearned. Trea Turner had two hits and two runs for NCSU. Travis
Orwig (3-0, 1.2 IP, H, BB, 3 K) got the win in relief. Tyler
Molinaro had two hits and a walk for the Seahawks (34-15).
No. 9 Florida State 13, Stetson 5
In DeLand, Fla., Jameis Winston went 3 for 5 with
four RBI to lead Florida State past Stetson in front of a crowd
of 2,517 at Melching Field. The Seminoles (39-9) scored a pair
in each of the first four innings. DJ Stewart (3 for 6, 2 2B, 3
R), Stephen McGee (2 for 3, HR, 3 R) and Giovanny Alfonzo (1 for
4) each drove in two for FSU. Peter Miller (6-1, 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R,
BB, 3 K) registered the victory. Kevin Fagan (3 for 5, 3B, 2 R)
drove in two, while K’shawn Smith (3 for 4, R, RBI) had two
doubles for the Hatters (23-25).
Cal State Northridge 4, No. 10 UCLA 1
In Los Angeles, Alexis Mercado had an RBI double
to cap a three-run first as Cal State Northridge won at UCLA.
Leadoff hitter Michael Livingston went 2 for 3 with a double,
two walks and a run for the Matadors (30-18). Oscar Sandoval
(2-0, 2 IP, H, BB, 3 K) got the win in relief and Josh Goossen-Brown
(1 IP, 2 H) notched his ninth save. Brian
Carroll had three hits for the Bruins (31-14).
No. 11 Louisville 4, Eastern Kentucky 0
In Richmond, Ky., Kyle Funkhouser tossed a
four-hitter with a career-best eight strikeouts as Louisville
blanked Eastern Kentucky. Funkhouser (3-1) did not walk a batter
and needed 105 pitches for the complete game. It was the eighth
shutout for the Cardinals (38-10), a single-season program
record. Ty Young (2 for 5, 2 R) had a two-run homer in a
three-run first for UL. Cole Sturgeon also had two hits and two
RBI for the Cardinals. Austin Grisham, Sean Hagen, Alex Hughes
and Luke Wurzelbacher each had a hit for the Colonels (17-28).
San Francisco 4, No. 20 Stanford 3
In Stanford, Calif., Ryan Matranga had two hits
and two RBI to lead San Francisco past Stanford in front of
1,188 fans at Sunken Diamond. The Dons (30-19) erased a 2-1
deficit with three in the fourth. Derek Atkinson went 3 for 4
with a double, a run and an RBI for USF. JK Edson (1-1, 0.2 IP,
H, K) got the win, with Adam Cimber (1.2, H, 4 K), the seventh
pitcher for the Dons, earning his eighth save. Danny Diekroeger
had two hits and two runs, while Alex Blandino added a pair of
sacrifice flies for the Cardinal (26-17).
