Oregon State outlasts
Seattle in 14 innings
High Point nips UNCA, Siena blanks Niagara,
Morehead State wins
In
Bellevue, Wash., Danny Hayes (right) scored on an infield single
by Jake Rodriguez in the top of the 14th as sixth-ranked Oregon
State outlasted Seattle 4-3 Monday at Bannerwood Park. Hayes (2
for 6, 2 R, 2 RBI) had a one-out double and moved to third on a
groundout before Rodriguez reached on a grounder in the hole at
short to plate the game-winner. Hayes had a two-run homer in the
second, while Tyler Smith went 3 for 6 with a triple and one run
for the Beavers (31-8). Scott Schultz (2-1, 7.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K)
earned the win. Cash McGuire and Nate Roberts both had two hits
for the Redhawks (15-24).
High Point 7, UNC Asheville 6
In Asheville, N.C., Josh Spano capped a three-run
ninth by scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as High Point
completed a three-game Big South sweep of UNC Asheville. Sean
Townsley (4-2, 2.1 IP, 3 K) retired the side in order in the
bottom of the ninth to earn the victory. The Panthers (9-6,
22-20) led 3-1 after six before the Bulldogs (2-13, 13-29) put
up five in the seventh for a 7-3 advantage. HPU answered with
one in the eighth before the ninth-inning outburst. Stephen
Wytiaz went 2 for 3 with a double, one run and one RBI for the
Panthers. Tommy Houmard (3 for 5, R, RBI), Kyle Towles (1 for 4,
2 R) and Phillip Treadway (2 for 4, 2B, RBI) led the offense for
UNCA.
Siena 10, Niagara 0
In Niagara Falls, N.Y., Ed Lewicki hurled a
shutout as Siena completed a three-game sweep of Niagara to move
into a first-place tie in the MAAC. Lewicki (3-1) allowed eight
hits and two walks while striking out four. The Saints (9-3,
17-21) scored in five of the first seven innings. John Rooney
went 4 for 5 with a double and three RBI, while Mike Fish (3 for
5, 2B, 3B, 4 R, 2 RBI) was a homer short of the cycle. Kevin
Paulsen had two hits for the Purple Eagles (7-8, 12-27). Siena
has won nine straight, the fourth-longest active streak in the
nation. The Saints trail North Carolina and NC State at 14 and
USF at 12.
Morehead State 15, St. Catharine 3
In Morehead, Ky., Taylor Sears drove in four as
Morehead State thumped St. Catharine. The Eagles (13-28) scored
in each of their final six at-bats, including five in the
fourth. Trey Gross (3 for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) homered, while Nick
Duff (2 for 2, 3 BB, 3 R, 2 RBI) had two doubles for Morehead
State. Tyler Keele (3-5, 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 1 K) picked up
the win. Tyler Mischel (1 for 4) had a two-run homer in the
sixth for the Patriots (36-19).
