Florida edges South
Carolina to start SEC series
Portland tops BYU, UVU handles HBU, Kansas
hammers Missouri Valley
In Gainesville, Fla., TJ Costen was tagged out
diving back into third for the game’s final out as Florida edged
South Carolina in the SEC series opener at McKethan Stadium.
Costen was on second with two away in the top of the ninth when
Chase Vergason (2 for 4) singled to right. Costen slipped as he
rounded third as the relay throw came in to the plate. Catcher
Taylor Gushue threw to Josh Tobias at third, who put the tag on
Costen before he could get back to the bag. Vickash Ramjit (2
for 3) scored twice for the Gators (6-7, 17-18), including a run
in the fourth to snap a 2-2 tie. Justin Shafer also had two hits
and a run for Florida. Jonathon Crawford (2-5, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R,
2 BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Johnny Magliozzi recorded
the final three outs for his seventh save. Nolan Belcher (5-3, 8
IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) went the distance for the
Gamecocks (8-5, 27-8). Connor Bright and Grayson Greiner both
had two hits for USC.
Portland 8, BYU 4
In Provo, Utah, Caleb Whalen had three hits and
three RBI to lead Portland past BYU in the WCC series opener at
Larry H. Miller Field. The Pilots (5-5, 13-20) scored in four of
the first six innings and put the game away with three in the
top of the ninth. Kramer Scott had a two-run homer for Portland.
Billy Sahlinger (2-2, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K) earned the win.
Jacob Hannemann had two hits, including a double, and three RBI
for the Cougars (5-5, 17-15).
Utah Valley 10, Houston Baptist 3
In Orem, Utah, Adam Gunn tossed a complete game
as Utah Valley took the series lid-lifter against Houston
Baptist at Brent Brown Ballpark. Gunn (4-4, 9 IP, 5 H, 3 R)
struck out five and did not walk a batter. Kade Andrus (2 for 4,
R), Willie Pratt (1 for 3, 2B, R) and Beau Kallas (1 for 1, R)
each drove in two for the Wolverines (4-1, 13-18). Jake Gonzalez
(2 for 4) homered and drove in all three runs for the Huskies
(3-2, 13-15).
Kansas 10, Missouri Valley 1
In Lawrence, Kan., Alex DeLeon and Connor McKay
both homered as Kansas spanked Missouri Valley. DeLeon (2 for 3,
2B, 2 R) had a two-run homer in the fourth, while McKay added a
three-run dinger in the seventh to cap the scoring for the
Jayhawks (20-12). Jordan Dreiling (2 for 3, 2B) also drove in a
pair for Kansas. Tanner Poppe (2-2, 4 IP, 1 H, 4 K) was the
starter and winner. Josh Hartin had two hits for the Vikings
(2-22).
Dallas Baptist 8, Seattle 4
In Dallas, Justin Wall hit one of his team’s
three home runs and drove in four as Dallas Baptist took the WAC
series opener from Seattle. Wall belted a three-run homer in the
fourth to give the Patriots (6-4, 19-15) a 4-0 advantage. KJ
Alexander went deep later in the frame and Ronnie Mitchell (2
for 5) had a dinger in the eighth for DBU. Jake Johansen (5-3, 7
IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Michael Smith
(2 IP, 1 BB, 4 K) notched his first save. Chase Fields had three
hits and two RBI, while Nate Roberts added a two-run homer for
the Redhawks (2-7, 11-21).
UT Arlington 6, Arlington Baptist 1
In Grand Prairie, Texas, Greg McCall had three
hits and two RBI as UT Arlington won its first-ever meeting with
Arlington Baptist. The Mavericks (17-15) scored twice in the
first, fourth and sixth. Andy Scott (5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K)
recorded the victory. Clint Hall had three hits, including a
double, and one RBI for the Patriots.
