Davis belts grand slam as Cal State Fullerton edges USC

Oregon wins at OSU, Florida nips FSU, Roche cycles with 10 RBI for Pitt

In Fullerton, Calif., J.D. Davis belted a grand slam in the bottom of the third to lead fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton past USC 6-4 Tuesday in front of 2,472 fans at Goodwin Field. The Titans (29-4) trailed 2-0 before the slam by Davis. Michael Lorenzen followed with a solo shot and Matt Chapman added a RBI single later in the six-run frame. Jake Jefferies went 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and a run for Fullerton. Jose Cardona (1-1, 2 IP, 1 H) picked up the victory, while Lorenzen (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) earned his 12th save. Blake Lacey went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI, while Timmy Robinson went deep for the Trojans (12-20).

No. 12 Oregon 6, No. 6 Oregon State 3

In Corvallis, Ore., Aaron Payne delivered a two-run triple in the top of the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie as Oregon downed Oregon State in non-conference action in front of 2,722 onlookers at Goss Stadium. Payne (2 for 3, 2 BB) came home on a sacrifice fly by Ryon Healy to give the Ducks (24-8) a three-run advantage. Jimmie Sherfy retired the Beavers (25-6) in order in the bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts for his ninth save, giving the win to Garrett Cleavinger (1-0, 1 IP, 1 K). Dylan Davis went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk for OSU.

Florida 4, No. 7 Florida State 3

In Tallahassee, Fla., Josh Tobias delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to snap a 3-3 deadlock as Florida edged Florida State in front of 6,719 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Harrison Bader (2 for 4, 3 R) reached second on an error to start the ninth for the Gators (16-18). He advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and came home on the sac fly by Tobias. Richie Martin (1 for 4, 2B) drove in a pair for UF. Daniel Gibson (1-0, 2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) picked up the win. DJ Stewart went 3 for 4 with a homer and two runs for the Seminoles (27-6).

Pittsburgh 24, Youngstown State 7

In Youngstown, Ohio, Casey Roche hit for the cycle and drove in 10 as Pittsburgh pounded Youngstown State. Roche went 5 for 7, with RBI singles in the third and fifth, two-run triple in the seventh, grand slam in the eighth and two-run double in ninth. The game was tied at 3 after five before the Panthers (21-9) put up five in the sixth, four in the seventh, five in the eighth and seven in the ninth. Dylan Wolsonovich (4 for 5, HR, 5 R, 2 RBI), Stephen Vranka (4 for 6, 3 2B, 5 R, 3 RBI), Elvin Soto (3 for 4, 3 BB, 4 R, RBI) and Eric Hess (1 for 4, 3B, 4 R, 3 RBI) also had big days at the plate for Pitt. Josh White drove in two, while Drew Dosch had two hits and two runs for the Penguins (9-22).

No. 1 North Carolina 15, Elon 3

In Elon, N.C., Colin Moran and Skye Bolt both had three hits and three RBI as North Carolina thumped Elon in front of 1.422 fans at Latham Park. The Tar Heels (30-2) put up four in the sixth to erase a 2-1 deficit. UNC added 10 runs over its final three at-bats. Bolt doubled, homered and scored three, while Moran had a double and two runs. Brian Holberton had three hits and scored three UNC. Chris Munnelly (3-0, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K) earned the victory. Ryan Kinsella (2 for 3, 2 R, BB) homered for the Phoenix (20-14).

No. 2 LSU 11, Southern 2

In Metairie, La., Mason Katz had a two-run single to spark a five-run first as LSU downed Southern for its 13th straight victory in front of 7,634 fans at Zephyr Field in the 10th annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation Classic. Katz went 2 for 3 with a run, while Alex Bregman was 1 for 3 with a triple and three RBI for the Tigers (31-2). Kurt McCune (1-0, 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K) received the win. Harley Wiltz had two doubles, while Kevin Williams went 2 for 3 with a triple and a run for the Jaguars (12-13).

No. 3 Vanderbilt 10, UT Martin 3

In Nashville, Tenn., Tony Kemp went 2 for 2 with a double, three runs and two RBI as Vanderbilt defeated UT Martin. Xavier Turner (2 for 4) and Connor Harrell (1 for 3) both drove in three for the Commodores (30-4). Vanderbilt snapped a 2-2 tie with four in the fourth and added three more in the fifth. Tyler Ferguson (3-0, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 4 K) secured the victory. Matt Haynes had two hits and two RBI, while Brent Morris went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs for the Skyhawks (9-23).

New Mexico 3-3, No. 8 Arkansas 0-4

In Fayetteville, Ark., Jacob Mahan had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap as Arkansas split a doubleheader with New Mexico. Matt Vinson (2 for 4, 2 R) had a one-out single in the ninth for the Razorbacks (24-10) and moved to third on a base hit by Tyler Spoon (3 for 3, 2B, RBI). Spoon advanced to second on an error and Dominic Ficociello was intentionally walked. Following a strikeout, Mahan singled to center to plate Vinson with the game-winner. Brian Anderson (1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 R) homered for Arkansas. Chris Oliver (2-0, 3 IP, 2 BB, 2 K) picked up the victory. Josh Melendez went 2 for 4 with a double and a run for the Lobos (17-16). In the opener, Drew Bridges (2-1, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K) and Josh Walker (3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K) combined on the shutout, with Walker earning his sixth save. Melendez had three hits, while Sam Haggerty went 1 for 3 with two runs for UNM. Spoon and Vinson both had two hits for the Razorbacks.

No. 9 South Carolina 6, The Citadel 5

In Columbia, S.C., Joey Pankake had a leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth as South Carolina nipped The Citadel. The Gamecocks (27-7) scored three in the seventh for a 5-2 lead before the Bulldogs (17-17) put up three in the top of the ninth. Connor Bright went 3 for 4, Grayson Greiner had two hits and two RBI and Dante Rosenberg (2 for 4) went deep for USC. Curt Britt (0.1 IP, 1 H) picked up the victory. Joe Jackson had three hits and two runs, while Johnathan Stokes (2 for 5) and Bo Thompson (1 for 2, 3 BB) both drove in two for The Citadel.

Western Kentucky 6, No. 11 Louisville 5

In Bowling Green, Ky., Regan Flaherty delivered a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Western Kentucky past Louisville in front of 2,370 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark. Cole Sturgeon (2 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) tied the game with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth for the Cardinals (25-7). Ryan Huck (1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 RBI) and Blake Crabtree (1 for 3, BB, 2 RBI) both went deep for the Hilltoppers (18-15). Josh Bartley (2-0, 1 IP, 1 K) got the win.

In Lexington, Ky., Kyle Barrett went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI as Kentucky downed Austin Peay in front of 1,803 fans at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Wildcats (23-9) scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. Zack Storm was 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI for UK. Kyle Cody (3-1, 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Trevor Gott struck out the side in the ninth for his eighth save. Kevin Corey went 2 for 3 with two runs for the Govs (25-8).

In Evansville, Ind., Casey Smith homered in the top of the seventh to break an 8-8 deadlock as Indiana outscored Evansville. The Hoosiers (26-4) built an 8-2 lead before the Purple Aces (14-19) scored three in both the fourth and fifth to knot the score at 8. Evansville loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth before Ryan Halstead (1 IP, 2 BB, 3 K) fanned the final two hitters for his sixth save, giving the win to Luke Harrison (2.1 IP, 2 K). Sam Travis went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBI, while Justin Cureton was 2 for 4 with a walk and four runs for IU. David Patton (1 for 5) and Kyle Pollock (1 for 5, 2B, R) both drove in two for the Purple Aces.

No. 15 UCLA 5, Hawaii 1

In Los Angeles, Cody Poteet tossed five scoreless innings as UCLA downed Hawaii. Poteet (2-3) allowed two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The Bruins (20-9) scored three in the third and two in the eighth. Shane Zeil went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI for UCLA. Trevor Podratz had two hits for the Rainbows (7-22).

No. 16 Rice 9, Lamar 8

In Beaumont, Texas, Michael Aquino had a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Ratterree in the top of the ninth to break an 8-8 tie as Rice edged Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Owls (24-11) scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings in building an 8-1 lead. The Cardinals (24-10) put up one in the third, four in the fourth and two in the seventh to tie it at 8. Aquino went 3 for 5 with a double, a triple, two runs and two RBI to lead the Rice offense. Kevin McCanna (2-0) retired the final seven Lamar hitters with six groundouts and a flyout to earn the victory. Darian Johnson went 1 for 5 with a double and three RBI, while Sam Bumpers (3 for 5, 2 R) and Brad Picha (3 for 5, 2B) both drove in a pair for the Cardinals.

No. 17 Georgia Tech 7, Georgia 5

In Athens, Ga., Zane Evans had two hits, three RBI and a save as Georgia Tech edged Georgia in front of a crowd of 2,745 at Foley Field. Brandon Thomas had two hits and two RBI in his return from mono, while Sam Dove added two hits and two runs for the Yellow Jackets (24-9). Josh Heddinger (2-0, 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R) earned the win in relief, while Evans fanned two in a hitless ninth for his third save. Zack Bowers (2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI) and Curt Powell (3 for 5) both scored twice for the Bulldogs (12-22).

No. 19 NC State 2, East Carolina 0

In Raleigh, N.C., five pitchers combined on the shutout and Tarran Senay delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth as NC State edged East Carolina in front of 2,951 spectators at Doak Field. Brett Williams (1 for 3, R) was hit by a pitch to start the sixth for the Wolfpack (25-10) and took second on a wild pitch. Jake Fincher was walked before a pair of strikeouts had the Pirates (15-18) one out away from escaping danger. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and both came in on Senay’s single. Andrew Woeck (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K) earned the win in relief, while Sasser (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) notched his third save. Bryan Bass had three hits for ECU.

Michigan 4, No. 20 Notre Dame 1

In Notre Dame, Ind., James Bourque and Matt Ogden combined to hold Notre Dame to one run as Michigan claimed the win at Frank Eck Stadium. Bourque (3-4, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) earned the victory, while Ogden (3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K) recorded his first save. Michael O’Neill and Kevin White both went 2 for 4 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Wolverines (17-14). Michigan scored one in the third and two in the fourth to take control early. Zak Kutsulis went 2 for 3 with a double and a run for the Fighting Irish (19-11).

Mississippi State 5, Ole Miss 1

In Pearl, Miss., Ross Mitchell tossed six scoreless innings in relief as Mississippi State downed Ole Miss to win the seventh annual Governor’s Cup game in front of a stadium-record crowd of 8,240 at Trustmark Park. Mitchell (6-0) allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four. The Bulldogs (27-9) erased an early 1-0 deficit with one in the fifth and two in both the sixth and seventh. Adam Frazier went 1 for 4 with two RBI for MSU. Stuart Turner had two hits and a run for the Rebels (23-10).
