Alfonzo drives in two
as Florida State wins at Florida
San Francisco knocks off Oregon State, UCSB
downs Notre Dame
In Gainesville, Fla., Giovanny Alfonzo had two
hits and two RBI as eighth-ranked Florida State defeated Florida
4-1 Tuesday in front of 4,709 fans at McKethan Stadium. It was
the first road game of the season for the Seminoles (16-0) and
their first win in Gainesville since 2007. FSU scored one in the
first, two in the fourth and one in the sixth. Luke Weaver (3-0,
6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 UE, 2 BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Bobby
Coles (1.1 IP, 1 K) secured his second save. Harrison Bader had
two hits and a run for the Gators (8-10).
San Francisco 5, No. 4 Oregon State 1
In Corvallis, Ore., Brendan Hendriks drove in
three as San Francisco handed Oregon State its first loss. The
Dons (7-8) scored two in the first, one in the third and two in
the seventh. Zachary Turner (3 for 5, 2B, RBI) scored twice for
USF. Haden Hinkle (4-0, 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K) took the win
in relief, while Adam Cimber (2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) secured his third
save. Dylan Davis homered in the sixth for the Beavers (15-1).
UC Santa Barbara 7, No. 18 Notre Dame 2
In Santa Barbara, Calif., Tyler Kuresa had three
hits and two RBI as UC Santa Barbara defeated Notre Dame. Kuresa
had a two-run triple to highlight a four-run fourth for the
Gauchos (9-7). Greg Mahle (3-1, 4 IP, 1 H, 6 K) earned the
victory. Phil Mosey had three hits and one run for the Fighting
Irish (10-4).
No. 1 North Carolina 12, Gardner-Webb 0
In Chapel Hill, N.C., Trent Thornton carried a
no-hitter into the eighth as North Carolina thumped Gardner-Webb
at Boshamer Stadium. Thornton (3-0, 7.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 8 K)
surrendered a single to Henry Rudio with two away in the eighth.
Cody Stubbs (2 for 4, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Skye Bolt (2 for 4, 2
R, 2 RBI) led the offense for the Tar Heels (11-4). The Runnin’
Bulldogs fell to 11-4.
No. 5 South Carolina 12, USC Upstate 3
In Columbia, S.C., Max Schrock and Brison Celek
both drove in three as South Carolina crushed USC Upstate in
front of 6,447 fans at Carolina Stadium. Schrock went 2 for 3
with a double and two runs, while Celek was 1 for 4 with a
double and a run. TJ Costen had three hits, including two
doubles, and three runs for the Gamecocks (14-2). Jack Wynkoop
(3-0, 2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K) earned the win in relief,
while Patrick Sullivan (3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K) notched his
first save. Daniel Seeba went 2 for 2 with two walks for the
Spartans (10-5).
No. 6 Ole Miss 10, ULM 4
In Monroe, La., Austin Anderson and Preston
Overbey both drove in three as Ole Miss defeated ULM. The Rebels
(15-1) scored single runs in the first and second before posting
three in the fourth and sixth in building an 8-1 lead. Josh
Laxer (2-0, 6.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K) recorded the win.
Dalton Herrington had two doubles and two runs for the Warhawks
(8-8).
No. 7 UCLA 5, Cal State Northridge 4
In Northridge, Calif., UCLA scored single runs in
the seventh and eighth to rally past Cal State Northridge. Miles
Williams (2 for 4) had a three-run homer to cap a four-run third
as the Matadors (6-11) took a 4-2 advantage. Ty Moore doubled
and scored in the fifth to pull the Bruins (12-3) within one.
Brian Carroll reached on an error and scored on another miscue
as UCLA tied it in the seventh. Eric Filia (2 for 4) singled and
scored on an error in the eighth to give the Bruins the lead.
Zack Weiss (1-0, 1 IP, 1 BB) earned the win, while David Berg
fanned four over the final two innings to record his fourth
save.
No. 9 Kentucky 6, Ohio 3
In Lexington, Ky., Trevor Gott earned his 16th
career save, a program record, as Kentucky downed Ohio at Cliff
Hagan Stadium. Gott recorded the final two outs of the game for
his fifth save of the season. He broke the record of 15 set by
Lorhn Frazier (1990-93). Zach Strecker (1-0, 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K)
picked up the win in relief. The Wildcats (14-2) scored four in
the second and a two-run homer by Zac Zellers (2 for 4, 2 R) an
inning later gave UK a 6-0 lead. Ben Otto has a two-run single
in the sixth for the Bobcats (3-11).
No. 12 Mississippi State 13, Southern Miss 5
In Pearl, Miss., Hunter Renfroe homered and drove
in six as Mississippi State outscored Southern Miss in front of
6,948 fans at Trustmark Park. Renfroe had a RBI double to spark
a four-run first, added a two-run double in the second and
belted a three-run homer in the sixth as the Bulldogs (18-2)
built a 10-1 lead. Luis Pollorena (4-0, 5 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4
K) picked up the win, while Ross Mitchell (4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K)
registered his first save. Blake Brown had two hits and two RBI
for the Golden Eagles (7-9).
No. 14 Oregon 4, Texas State 3
In Eugene, Ore., Ryon Healey had two hits,
including a home run, to lead Oregon past Texas State at PK
Park. Healy’s dinger in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at
3 and Ryan Hambright had a RBI single later in the frame to give
the Ducks (12-5) the lead for good. Jeff Gold (3-0, 6 IP, 7 H, 3
R, 1 BB, 5 K) earned the win, while Jimmie Sherfy (1 IP, 1 H, 3
K) recorded his fifth save. Kevin Sah had three hits, including
a triple, and one RBI for the Bobcats (5-11).
No. 15 Arkansas 20, Alabama A&M 2
In Fayetteville, Ark., Isaac Hellbusch homered
and drove in five as Arkansas drew a school-record 19 walks in
throttling Alabama A&M at Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks (12-5)
broke a 1-1 tie with seven in the fourth and capped the scoring
with nine in the seventh. Brian Anderson (2 for 5, 3 R) knocked
in four for Arkansas. Thomas Altimont (1-0, 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 UE, 2
BB, 2 K) picked up the victory. Patrick Dodson drew three walks
and knocked in one for the Bulldogs (2-16).
No. 18 NC State 1, Quinnipiac 0
In Raleigh, N.C., five pitchers combined for 16
strikeouts as NC State nipped Quinnipiac. Andrew Woeck (2-0, 2.1
IP, 5 K) picked up the win in relief, while Chris Overman struck
out the side in the ninth to earn his second save. Brett Austin
(3 for 5, 2 2B) had a RBI double in the sixth for the Wolfpack
(13-4). Chris Migani had two hits for the Bobcats (4-3).
UNC Wilmington 7, Elon 3
In Wilmington, N.C., Blaze Tart fanned six over
seven innings as UNCW downed Elon to give head coach Mark Scalf
his 700th career victory. Tart (1-1) allowed four hits, two
walks and three unearned runs. William Shepley recorded the
final out for his first save. Ryan LaGrange (2 for 3, R) and
Drew Farber (1 for 3, HR) both knocked in two for the Seahawks
(10-6), who won their fourth straight contest. Alex Swim drove
in a pair in a three-run fifth for the Phoenix (7-8).
