Cullen's grand slam
helps VCU down Wagner
Ohio State nips Coastal Carolina, Gonzaga
outlasts Hawaii in 12
In
Richmond, Va., Bill Cullen (right) hit a grand slam and drove in
five as VCU outscored Wagner 11-8 Monday at The Diamond. Cullen
drew a bases-loaded walk in the second and belted a grand slam
in the fifth as the Rams (10-3) snapped a three-game losing
skid. Seth Greene (1-0, 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 K) earned the
win in relief. Nick Dini went 4 for 5 with a double, two runs
and one RBI for the Seahawks (2-9).
Ohio State 3, Coastal Carolina 2
In Myrtle Beach, S.C., Joe Ciamacco singled and
scored in the top of the ninth as Ohio State edged Coastal
Carolina. Ciamacco went 3 for 3 with two runs for the Buckeyes
(9-5). Ryan Riga (1-0, 3 IP, 1 H, 1 UE, 1 K) earned the win in
relief. Trace Dempsey (1 IP, 1 H) picked up his fourth save.
Colin Hering went 1 for 4 with one RBI for the Chanticleers
(7-9).
Gonzaga 3, Hawaii 1 (12)
In Honolulu, Cabe Retten had a two-run triple
with two away in the top of 12th as Gonzaga outlasted Hawaii in
front of 2,410 fans at Les Murakami Stadium. Alex Bonczyk went 2
for 3 with a run for the Bulldogs (9-4-1). Michael Rucker (1-0,
3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) won in relief of Derek Callahan (8.1 IP,
5 H,1 R, 2 BB, 3 K). Marc Flores (2 for 5, 2B) homered for the
Rainbows (1-15). Scott Squier (4 H, 1 R) struck out six in nine
innings for Hawaii.
Stony Brook 3, Fordham 2
In Stony Brook, N.Y., Tanner Nivins knocked in
all three runs as Stony Brook edged Fordham at Joe Nathan Field.
Nivins had a two-run single in the first and drove in the
eventual game-winner in the third. Cole Peragine (2 for 4, 2B,
R) and Jack Parenty (2 for 4, 2 R, SB) had multiple hits for the
Seawolves (4-10). Tim Kresnik (2-0, 3.1 IP, 2 BB, 3 K) earned
the win, while Tyler Honahan (1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K) recorded his
third save. Tim Swatek (2 for 3) stole two bases and Ryan
McNally (2 for 3) had a two-run homer in the fourth for the Rams
(7-6).
Bucknell 5, Fairfield 1
In Winter Haven, Fla., Dan Goldstein pitched into
the ninth as Bucknell downed Fairfield. Goldstein (2-2) allowed
three hits, six walks and one run in 8.1 innings with three
strikeouts. Ryan Plourde had a RBI double in the bottom of the
first for the Stags (3-6). The Bison (3-9) were held hitless
over the first six innings by Jeremy Soule (0-3, 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R,
2 BB, 2 K), but tallied two runs in the seventh and three more
in the ninth. Anthony Gingerelli (2 for 4, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Corey
Furman (1 for 4) both drove in two Bucknell.
Utah 3, Saint Mary’s 1
In Moraga, Calif., Dalton Carroll allowed one run
in 5.1 innings of relief as Utah edged Saint Mary’s at Louis
Guisto Field. Carroll (1-1) surrendered four hits and three
walks while striking out four. Ryan Brockett (1-2, 9 IP, 5 H, 3
R, 2 BB, 6 K) went the distance for the Gaels (5-11). Tyler Yagi
went 2 for 3 with a triple and one RBI, while Trey Nielsen added
two hits, including a double, and a run for the Utes (8-6).
Brenden Kalfus went 3 for 3 for SMC.
Miami (Ohio) 8, LIU Brooklyn 1
In Winter Haven, Fla., Nathan Williams allowed
one run over seven innings as Miami defeated LIU Brooklyn.
Williams (2-1) gave up four hits and one walk while striking out
six. John Crummy had two hits, including a three-run double in
the fifth for the RedHawks (5-6). Pete Leonello had two hits for
the Blackbirds (0-9).
North Dakota State 5, Navy 1
In Winter Haven, Fla., Trevor Jaunich pitched a
career-high eight innings to lead North Dakota State past Navy.
Jaunich (1-0) allowed five hits and one unearned run with one
walk and four strikeouts. Tom Colwell had three hits and two RBI
for the Bison (6-6). Brandon Beans, Chris Campbell and David
Wiedeman each had two hits for the Midshipmen (6-8).
Albany 3-2, NYIT 2-0
In Brookhaven, N.Y., Albany pitchers recorded 28
strikeouts in a doubleheader sweep of NYIT. In the opener,
Kasceim Graham (2-1, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 BB) notched a career-high 10
strikeouts for the Great Danes (3-7). Ryan Stinar pitched a
perfect ninth with a strikeout to earn his second save. Evan
Harasta had two hits, including a double, and two RBI for
Albany. Michael Fermin had two hits and one RBI for the Bears
(0-7). In the nightcap, Derek Zielinski and Austin Chase
combined on the shutout. Zielinksi (1-3) allowed two hits, did
not walk a batter and fanned seven over the first five innings.
Chase gave up a hit and a walk in the final four frames with six
punchouts to earn his first save. John Nethaway (2 for 2, 2B, R)
and Jeff Welsh knocked in runs in the third. Danny Lackner had a
hit and a steal for NYIT.
