Poche & two Arkansas relievers blank San Diego State

BYU tops UC Irvine, Cal rallies past Fresno State in 10, Michigan wins

 

In Fayetteville, Ark., Colin Poche and two relievers combined on the shutout as No. 19 Arkansas blanked San Diego State 2-0 Thursday in the series opener at Baum Stadium. Poche (2-0) allowed three hits and one walk in four innings with two strikeouts. Brandon Moore gave up two hits and a walk in three innings with one punchout. Barrett Astin (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) secured his first save. The Razorbacks (8-5) scored both runs in the third. Brian Anderson went 1 for 3 with a double and one RBI for Arkansas. Jake Romanski went 1 for 3 with a walk, while Michael Cederoth (1-2, 8 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K) went the distance for the Aztecs (7-6).

 

BYU 6, UC Irvine 3

In Provo, Utah, Jaycob Brugman’s two-run double capped a four-run seventh as BYU downed UC Irvine in the series opener at Larry H. Miller Field. Brugman finished with three hits, while Jacob Hannemann added a pair of RBI triples. Derek Speigner (1-0, 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 UE, 1 BB) was awarded the win, while James Lengal pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout to notch his third save. Mikey Duarte drove in two for the Anteaters (11-3). Andrew Thurman (1-2, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K) suffered the loss.

 

California 5, Fresno State 4 (10)

In Berkeley, Calif., Brendan Farney had a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th as California rallied past Fresno State at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears (6-7) trailed 4-1 before Andrew Knapp (2 for 4, 3 RBI) delivered a two-run double in the seventh and a sac fly in the ninth. Trevor Hildenberger (2-1, 3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the victory. Kevin Viers drove in a pair for the Bulldogs (3-9).

 

Michigan 6, Holy Cross 3

In San Diego, Patrick Biondi had three hits and two runs to lead Michigan past Holy Cross at Fowler Park. Michael O’Nelll and Travis Maezes both had three hits and one RBI for the Wolverines (6-6). Ben Ballantine (1-0, 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) earned the win, while Kyle Clark (1 IP, 1 H) secured his third save. Evan Ocello had a two-run double and scored in a three-run fifth for the Crusaders (1-9).

 

Kansas 7, Niagara 0

In Lawrence, Kan., Tommy Mirabelli went 2 for 2 with a career-high three RBI as Kansas blanked Niagara at Hoglund Ballpark. Jordan Dreiling had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI for the Jayhawks (7-5). Drew Morovick (1-1) allowed three hits in five scoreless innings for Kansas. Christian Vangeison had two hits, including a double, for the Purple Eagles (3-10).

 

Utah Valley 17, Nevada 6

In Orem, Utah, Stone Ramsey had five RBI and Kade Andrus knocked in four as Utah Valley rallied past Nevada in its home opener. The Wolf Pack (9-5) scored six in the top of the first before the Wolverines (6-7) tallied three in the first, one in the second and three in the third to take the lead. Court Zollinger (2B, 3 R, 2 RBI) had four hits, while Willie Pratt (3 for 4, 3B, 2 R) added three RBI for UVU. Ty Hansen (1-1, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K) earned the win in relief, while Braden Poole (4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K) picked up his first save. Kewby Meyer (4 for 5, 2B, R, RBI) and Jamison Rowe (2 for 5, 2 RBI) led the Nevada offense.

 

NC Central 6, Norfolk State 1

In Durham, N.C., Jordan Quinn allowed three hits and one run in seven innings as NC Central downed Norfolk State at Durham Athletic Park. Quinn (3-0) walked four and fanned two. Jacob Russel retired six straight with one strikeout to secure the win for the Eagles (8-5). Dylan Drayton (3 for 5, 3 RBI) had a run-scoring double in the first and a two-run single in the sixth, while Tyson Simpson (2 for 4) delivered a two-run single to cap the three-run first for NCCU. Kyle Vaas had two hits, while Chase Kyriacou had a sacrifice fly for the Spartans (3-8).

 

Snowbird Classic (Port Charlotte, N.C.)

 

Bowling Green 8, Georgetown 7 (10)

Andrew Kubuski drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th to carry Bowling Green past Georgetown. Brian Bien drove in two, while Patrick Lancaster went 3 for 6 with a triple, one run and one RBI for the Falcons (3-7). Nick Bruns (2-0, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 K) earned the victory. Christian Venditti homered and drove in three, while Nick Collins was 3 for 4 with two RBI for the Hoyas (5-5).

 

West Virginia 8, Bowling Green 2

Bobby Boyd went 4 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI as West Virginia downed Bowling Green. The Mountaineers (6-6) used a five-run fifth to break a 2-2 deadlock. Matt Frazer (2 for 2, BB, R) and Ryan McBroom (2 for 4, R) both drove in two for WVU. Corey Walter (1-2, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K) earned the victory. Logan Walker went 1 for 4 with one run and one RBI for the Falcons (3-8).

 

Georgetown 8, Maine 3

Georgetown used a five-run sixth to erase a 3-0 deficit against Maine. Justin Leeson and Steve Anderson (2 for 3) had sacrifice flies to cap the rally for the Hoyas (6-5). Georgetown added three in the seventh. Curtiss Pomeroy (2 for 4) and Paul Bello both drove in two for the Hoyas. Will Brown (2-0, 4 IP, 3 H, 4 K) earned the win. Michael Fransoso had three hits, including a double, and two runs for the Black Bears (6-9).
