Schmidt helps Clemson
even series with South Carolina
Fullerton downs Oregon, North Carolina outscores Cal, ASU
tops Arkansas
In
Greenville, S.C., Clate Schmidt held sixth-ranked South Carolina
to a pair of runs in seven innings as Clemson evened the series
with a 6-3 win Saturday in front of 7,125 fans at Fluor Field.
Schmidt (2-0) allowed five hits and three walks while fanning
five. Matt Campbell (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K) registered his
third save. Garrett Boulware (1 for 3) had a RBI double and
scored in a two-run second for the Tigers (6-3). Steven Duggar
(2 for 4) had a two-run single in a three-run fifth as Clemson
built a 5-0 lead. Max Schrock and LB Dantzler had solo homers in
the sixth for the Gamecocks (7-2). The win was No. 1,230 in 34
seasons for head coach Jack Leggett (pictured), tying Jim Dietz
for 13th place on the all-time list for Division I.
No. 18 Cal State Fullerton 5, No. 7 Oregon 2
In Fullerton, Calif., Michael Lorenzen smacked a
three-run homer in the bottom of the first as Cal State
Fullerton won its series against Oregon in front of 3,192 fans
at Goodwin Field. The Titans (10-0) were playing with heavy
hearts following the news of the passing of teammate Nick
Hurtado to bone cancer. Carlos Lopez wore the No. 56 jersey in
his honor. Justin Garza (3-0, 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K) earned
the win, while Lorenzen pitched a scoreless ninth for his third
save. Kyle Garlick had a two-run triple in the sixth for the
Ducks (7-3).
No. 1 North Carolina 11, California 5
In Houston, Landon Lassiter went 4 for 6 with two
runs as North Carolina used an eight-run fourth to defeat
California at the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute
Maid Park. Colin Moran (2 for 4, 2B), Michael Russell (1 for 4)
and Korey Dunbar (1 for 4) each drove in four for the Tar Heels
(9-0). Benton Moss (3-0, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K)
earned thee victory. Devon Rodriguez had three hits for the
Golden Bears (4-6).
Arizona State 3, No. 2 Arkansas 1
In Surprise, Ariz., Ryan Kellogg allowed one run
over six innings as Arizona State edged Arkansas at Surprise
Stadium. Kellogg (1-0) surrendered six hits and struck out five.
Ryan Burr (2 IP, 2 K) earned his second save. The Sun Devils
(7-3) scored a pair in the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie. Trever
Allen had two hits and two runs for ASU. Tyler Spoon went 2 for
4 for the Razorbacks (7-4), who have lost three straight. Trey
Killian (1-1, 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R) struck out nine for Arkansas.
No. 3 Vanderbilt 5, UIC 3
In Nashville, Tenn., Vince Conde went 2 for 4 and
scored a run in Vanderbilt's seesaw victory against UIC. Tyler
Beede (3-0, 6.2 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB) allowed just one earned run,
struck out eight and contained UIC to two runs in a chaotic
sixth to get the win for the Commodores (11-1). Brian Miller
(1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 K) got his second save. Tyler Detmer went 3 for
4 with a double, run and RBI for the Flames (3-5).
No. 4 LSU 7, Brown 1
In Baton Rouge, La., Raph Rhymes had a two-run
double in a five-run second as LSU bounced Brown at Alex Box
Stadium. Alex Bregman (3 for 4) and Mark Laird (2 for 3) both
scored twice for the Tigers (9-1). Ryan Eades (2-0, 6 IP, 5 H, 1
R) struck out a career-best 11 in earning the victory. Cody
Slaughter had two hits for the Bears (1-2).
No. 5 Oregon State 7-3, Bryant 2-1
In Corvallis, Ore., Michael Conforto homered
twice and knocked in five as Oregon State remained undefeated
with a doubleheader sweep of Bryant in front of a crowd of 2,025
at Goss Stadium. In Game 1, Conforto (3 for 4, 2 R, 3 RBI) went
deep in the fifth and added a RBI single in the seventh. Dylan
Davis (2 for 5) had a two-run double in a three-run first for
the Beavers (11-0). Dan Child (3-0, 7 IP, 3 H, 2 UE, 2 BB, 5 K)
earned the victory. Kevin Brown went 3 for 4 with a run for the
Bulldogs (0-5-1). In the nightcap, Andrew Moore (3-0, 4 H, 1 BB,
7 K) allowed one unearned run in eight innings to register the
win, while Max Engelbrekt fanned three in the ninth for his
second save. Conforto belted a two-run homer in the bottom of
the first for OSU. John Mullun had two hits, including a double,
and one RBI for the Bryant.
No. 8 UCLA 4, Wright State 2
In Los Angeles, Nick Vander Tuig
worked into the eighth inning, and David Berg posted his second
save in as many days as UCLA nipped Wright State. Vander Tuig
(2-1) allowed six hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings in his
longest outing of the season. Cody Regis went 2 for 3 with two
runs, and Kevin Kramer and Pat Valaika each contributed an RBI
for the Bruins (7-2). Taylor Braun (0-2) allowed only four hits
but surrendered six walks and three earned runs for the Raiders
(3-5). Mark Fowler and Jason DeFevers each went 2 for 4 with a
run for Wright State.
No. 9 Mississippi State 4, Saint Joseph’s 0
In Starkville, Miss., Evan Mitchell struck out
nine in five innings to lead Mississippi State past Saint
Joseph’s at Dudy Noble Field. Mitchell (4-0) allowed three hits
and five walks, but only one run. Jonathan Holder (1 IP, 1 H, 2
BB, 1 K) picked up his fourth save. The Bulldogs (13-0) broke a
1-1 tie with one in the seventh and added two insurance runs in
the eighth. C.T. Bradford went 3 for 4 with a run, while Adam
Frazier was 2 for 4 with one run for MSU. Anthony Cirillo went 2
for 2 with two walk and two steals for the Hawks (2-6).
No. 10 Kentucky 7, Akron 0
In Lexington, Ky., Jerad Grundy struck out 12 in
eight innings of two-hit ball to ease Kentucky past Akron. A.J.
Reed (3 for 4, IBB) started the offense for the Wildcats (9-1)
with a solo homer in the fifth and added a two-run single in the
seventh. Greg Fettes (3 for 4) had an RBI double and scored in
the fifth, as well as an RBI single and another run in the
sixth. James Sheltrown went 1 for 2 for the Zips (0-9).
No. 11 NC State 2, Florida Atlantic 1 (10)
In Myrtle Beach, S.C., Carlos Rodon rang up a
career-high 16 strikeouts as NC State edged Florida Atlantic at
Baseball at the Beach. Rodon (7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB) fanned eight
of the first nine hitters. Ryan Wilkins (1-0, 1.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K)
picked up the win. Trae Turner (2 for 5, 2 2B) doubled and
scored on an errant throw home on a fielder’s choice in the
bottom of the 10th to give the Wolfpack (9-1) the win. Brett
Austin had two hits and a run for NCSU. Nathan Pittman had a
run-scoring single in the sixth for the Owls (5-5).
No. 12 Stanford 7, Texas 2
In Stanford, Calif., Daniel Starwalt tossed 3.1
innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory as Stanford
topped Texas to clinch a series win at Sunken Diamond. Starwalt
(2-0) allowed three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Sam
Lindquist (2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 K) recorded his second save. The
Cardinal (8-2) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth
before a four-run explosion in the seventh pushed the lead to
7-0. Austin Slater had two hits and two RBI, while Danny
Diekroeger went deep for Stanford. Erich Weiss went 2 for 4 with
two RBI, while Weston Hall went 3 for 3 with one RBI for the
Longhorns (6-4).
Texas A&M 8, No. 13 Rice 3
In Houston, Daniel Mengden improved to 3-0 with eight solid
innings as Texas A&M knocked off Rice at the Astros Foundation
College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The Aggies (8-4) scored
three times in the first and three more in the second to give
Mengden (8 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 8 K) a big cushion. Blake
Allemand had a three-run double down the left-field line in the
first inning, and A&M took advantage of some sloppy Owls defense
in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Mikey Reynolds went 3 for 4
with two runs and a RBI. Michael Aquino went 2 for 4 with a
homer and three RBI for Rice (6-4).
No. 14 Florida State 7, Villanova 0
In Tallahassee, Fla., Scott Sitz fanned nine in
six scoreless innings as Florida State blanked Villanova to
clinch a series victory in front of 4,970 fans at Dick Howser
Stadium. Sitz (2-0) allowed three hits and one walk. Marcus
Davis went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI,
while John Nogowski added two doubles, one run and one RBI for
the Seminoles (9-0). Paul Rambaud had two hits and two steals
for the Wildcats (1-5).
No. 15 Ole Miss 8, FIU 3
In Miami, Will Jamison drove in a pair as Ole
Miss scored in five of the first six innings to clinch a series
victory at FIU. Jamison has a sac fly in the fourth and a RBI
single in the sixth. Preston Overbey went 2 for 4 with a triple
and two runs for the Rebels (10-1). Mike Mayers (1-0, 7 IP, 6 H,
2 R, 6 K) walked away with the win. Oscar Aguirre (2 for 4) had
a two-run homer in the fifth for the Panthers (7-4).
Pepperdine 7, No. 16 Oklahoma 2
In Norman, Okla., Austin Davidson had a three-run
homer in a four-run ninth as Pepperdine pulled away from
Oklahoma to even the series at one game apiece. Nate Johnson had
three hits and two RBI, while Chris Amezquita added two hits and
two runs for the Waves (7-4). Corey Miller (2-1, 6.1 IP, 8 H, 2
R, 1 BB, 2 K) picked up the victory. Matt Oberste (3 for 4, 2 R)
homered for the Sooners (10-1). Jonathan Gray (2-1, 6 IP, 5 H, 3
R, 2 BB, 7 K) suffered the loss.
No. 17 Arizona 5, San Francisco 2
In Tucson, Ariz., Arizona scored four times in the first
inning, and James Farris worked around some early-innings
wildness to post eight solid innings as the Wildcats beat San
Francisco for the second straight day. Trent Gilbert highlighted
the first with a two-run triple off Alex Balog (1-1), who had
allowed one run in 14 innings entering Saturday. Kevin Newman
added two hits and two RBI, and Brandon Dixon had two hits and
two runs for Arizona (10-2). Balog didn't allow another run
after the first, finishing with seven innings, seven hits and
three strikeouts. Farris (3-0) allowed four hits and three walks
in the first three innings, but limited the damage to a Bob
Cruikshank RBI single in the third. He finished allowing eight
hits and two earned runs and striking out six. Zachary Turner
had two hits to lead the Dons (4-7).
No. 19 Louisville 10, Kent State 3
In Louisville, Ky., Ty Young went 2 for 4 with a
double and two RBI to help Louisville pull away late from Kent
State. Adam Engel (1 R) also went 2 for 4 for the Cardinals
(9-1). Nick Ratajczak (1 for 2, 3 R, RBI, 3 BB) and Mike White
(1 for 3, R, 2 RBI, BB) tripled for Louisville. Jeff Thompson
(3-0, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB) struck out eight and allowed two earned
runs in 6.2 innings for the win, and then Anthony Kidston was
perfect the rest of the way, including five strikeouts, to earn
his first save. T.J. Sutton went 2 for 3 with a run and RBI for
the Golden Flashes (1-9).
No. 20 Georgia Tech 11, Rutgers 2
In Atlanta, Daniel Palka had a three-run homer in
a five-run second as Georgia Tech secured a series win over
Rutgers. Palka (2 for 3, 4 RBI) helped the Yellow Jackets (10-1)
build a 6-0 lead after two. A.J. Murray also went deep, while
Sam Dove was 2 for 3 with two walks and three runs. Dusty Isaacs
(2-1, 6 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K) came away with the win. Tech
scored in double figures for the fifth straight game, the
longest streak since 2006. Jeff Melillo went 3 for 5, while
Brian O’Grady had three hits and two runs for the Scarlet
Knights (2-6), who stranded 11.
Notre Dame 3, Virginia Tech 0
In Cary, N.C., Adam Norton tossed a four-hit
shutout as Notre Dame blanked Virginia Tech. Norton (3-0) walked
one and struck out five. Trey Mancini (2 for 4) drove in all
three runs for the Irish (8-1) with a two-run homer in the
fourth and a RBI single in the eighth. Notre Dame has not gotten
off to a better start since going 9-0 in 1960. Chad Pinder went
1 for 3 with a walk for the Hokies (10-2).
VCU 11, The Citadel 6
In Charleston, S.C., Vimael Machin had a grand
slam and knocked in five as VCU outscored The Citadel at the
Charleston Crab House Shootout. Machin had a RBI single in a
two-run first and his slam in the sixth gave the Rams (7-0) an
8-2 advantage. Machin scored three, as did teammates Bill Cullen
(2 for 4, HR, 2 BB) and James Bunn (2 for 3, 2 BB). Tyler
Buckley (1-0, 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 4 K) earned the victory,
while Matt Lees (3.1 IP, 2 H, 5 K) recorded his fourth save.
Mason Davis had two hits and two runs for the Bulldogs (5-5).
Virginia 12, Bucknell 4
Virginia 11, Harvard 5
In Charlottesville, Va., Derek Fisher and Branden
Cogswell both had five hits and Joe McCarthy drove in five as
Virginia swept two games to remain undefeated. In the opener
against Bucknell, the Cavaliers (11-0) used a four-run first to
roll to victory. Cogswell had three hits, including a triple,
and three runs, while Fisher went 3 for 3 with one run and one
RBI. Scott Silverstein (2-0, 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 K) was the
winning pitcher. Jon Mayer had a two-run double in a three-run
fourth for the Bison (0-8). In the second contest, McCarthy (2
for 4, 3 RBI) and Mike Papi (2 for 5, 2 R, 4 RBI) both homered
UVa. Whit Mayberry (2-0, 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the
win in relief. Brandon Kregel doubled twice and scored, while DJ
Link went 3 for 4 with one RBI for the Crimson (1-2).
Louisiana-Lafayette 8, Sacred Heart 2
In Lafayette, La., Caleb Adams belted three home
runs and drove in five as Louisiana-Lafayette powered past
Sacred Heart. Adams had two-run shots in the second and fifth,
going solo in the eighth. Michael Strentz went 3 for 4 with a
homer, two runs and two RBI for the Ragin’ Cajuns (10-2). Cody
Boutte (3-0, 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K) was the winning hurler.
John Murphy (3 for 4) went deep for the Pioneers (0-2).
Florida 6, Miami (Fla.) 4
In Gainesville, Fla., Taylor Gushue had a two-run
single to highlight a four-run eighth as Florida evened its
series with Miami at McKethan Stadium and ended its six-game
losing streak. Gushue finished with two hits and three RBI,
while Casey Turgeon homered and scored twice for the Gators
(4-7). Johnny Magliozzi (1-0, 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R) picked up the
win. Chantz Mack went 2 for 5 with a double and two runs for the
Hurricanes (10-1).
Iowa 7, Western Illinois 3
In Little Rock, Ark., Jake Yacinich went 3 for 5
with two RBI as Iowa downed Western Illinois to give head coach
Jack Dahm his 500th career victory. The Hawkeyes (4-4) scored
three in the bottom of the first to take control. Kris Goodman
(1 for 3, R, 2 HBP) also drove in a pair for Iowa. Matt Dermody
(2-0, 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Nick
Hibbing (2 IP, 1 H, 3 K) recorded his first save. Brent Turner
went 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI for the Leathernecks
(2-6).
