Boyd, Beavers Survive
Aaron
Slegers was brilliant for Indiana. Matt Boyd (left) was slightly
better than brilliant for Oregon State.
Boyd turned in a sensational performance Wednesday night,
tossing a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts as the Beavers
edged the Hoosiers 1-0 in an elimination game at the College
World Series at TD Ameritrade Park. Oregon State (52-12) moves
on to meet Mississippi State on Friday and needs two wins
against the Bulldogs to advance to the CWS Championship Series.
Indiana (49-16) was shut out for the first time this season,
putting an end to a magical season.
Boyd (11-4), a former reliever who passed on signing a
professional contract last year after his junior season,
devastated the Hoosiers by staying ahead most of the night and
keeping them off balance with his curve ball - no Indiana
runners advanced past second base, and Boyd picked off two. The
Hoosiers' biggest threat came in the bottom of the fifth when
they put runners on first and second with one out, but Boyd
escaped with a fly out to right field and a pop out on the
infield.
Slegers (9-2) matched Boyd pitch for pitch, allowing seven hits
and one run in the tough-luck loss.
Kavin Keyes (2 for 4) led off the fourth with a single and moved
to third on a Ryan Barnes double - Barnes (2 for 4) showed bunt
but slashed instead, ripping the ball down the left-field line.
Jake Rodriguez then lofted a sacrifice fly down the right-field
line for the game's only run.
