Rodon
and NC State stop North Carolina
In
Omaha, Neb., Carlos Rodon (left) tossed a five-hitter with eight
strikeouts as NC State defeated top-seeded North Carolina 8-1
Sunday in front of 22,972 fans at TD Ameritrade Park.
Rodon (10-2) held the Tar
Heels (57-11) scoreless for eight innings before they plated a
run in the ninth. Rodon walked two, faced 32 batters and
delivered 108 pitches.
The Wolfpack (50-14) got on the board in the top
of the first as Trea Turner walked, stole second and scored on a
two-out single by Tarran Senay to make it 1-0.
NC State chased UNC starter Kent Emanuel in the
third. Brett Austin had a one-out double and came in on a
two-out base hit by Grant Clyde. Brett Williams (2 for 4)
doubled in Clyde and scored on a base hit by Bryan Adametz (2
for 4), ending the day for Emanuel (11-4, 2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 1
BB, 2 K). Reliever Chris McCue walked Jake Armstrong before
surrendering a single to Logan Ratledge (2 for 5) to bring in
Adametz and make it 5-1.
Austin had a sacrifice fly in the eighth, while
Armstrong and Ratledge drove in runs in the top of the ninth to
extend the lead to 8-0.
Chaz Frank had a leadoff
single in the bottom of the ninth for UNC and scored on a double
by Landon Lassiter as the Tar Heels avoided the shutout.
Brian Holberton had a pair of hits for UNC.
North Carolina tied a CWS record by using eight
pitchers.
NC State will face the winner of UCLA-LSU on
Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT, while North Carolina will meet the loser
of that game at 2 p.m. CT in an elimination contest.
