Cruz fired at USC
Less than a week after being suspended, USC head
coach Frank Cruz has been fired for exceeding NCAA Countable
Athletically-Related Activities (CARA) hours.
CARA rules restrict the amount of time
student-athletes can spend in activities directed by or
supervised by the coaching staff.
The school has also self-imposed a reduction in
the number of practice session hours for the Trojans this season
and next. USC has made the NCAA and Pac-12 aware of the
infraction.
Associate head coach Dan Hubbs has been elevated
to head coach. The former USC All-American pitcher is in his
second season on staff with the Trojans. He spent 12 years as
pitching coach at California after a seven-year professional
career.
Cruz was 48-63 in two seasons as head coach at
USC.
The Trojans open the 2013 season on Feb. 15 at
Cal State Fullerton.
