Gausman strikes out 11 as LSU wins at Kentucky

Baylor beats A&M, UF edges UGA in 16, Thurman throws no-hitter for UCI

 

In Lexington, Ky., Kevin Gausman struck out 11 in seven innings as No. 4 LSU, under head coach Paul Mainieri (left), won the SEC series opener over third-ranked Kentucky 5-4 Friday evening in a battle of division leaders in front of 3,785 fans at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Gausman (7-1) allowed 10 hits and four runs with one walk. Chris Cotton worked a scoreless eighth before Nick Goody struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save. Austin Nola went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI, while Arby Fields had two hits, including a double, and two runs for the Tigers (12-4, 32-7). Tyler Moore homered for LSU. Zac Zellers went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI, while Michael Williams drove in a pair and Cameron Flynn went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and one RBI for the Wildcats (11-5, 33-6).

 

No. 6 Baylor 5, No. 5 Texas A&M 3

In College Station, Texas, Baylor erased a 3-2 deficit with a three-run eighth in downing Texas A&M in the Big 12 series opener in front of 5,621 fans at Blue Bell Park. The Bears (16-0, 33-7) extended their win streak to 22. Josh Turley (6-0, 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) picked up the win, while Max Garner (2 IP, 2 K) notched his sixth save. Logan Vick went 2 for 5 with two RBI, while Nathan Orf went 3 for 3 with one run and one RBI for BU. Mikey Reynolds went 1 for 5 with a triple and a run for the Aggies (9-4, 28-10). A&M starter Michael Wacha (5.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K) earned a no-decision.

 

No. 2 Florida 3, Georgia 2 (16)

In Gainesville, Fla., Vickash Ramjit scored on a two-out throwing error of a third strike in the bottom of the 16th as Florida took the SEC series opener from Georgia in front of 4,840 fans at McKethan Stadium. Ramjit received a one-out walk and was sacrificed to second. He moved to third on a wild pitch before a bad throw to first on a strikeout to Nolan Fontana (2 for 7, R) allowed Ramjit to score the game-winner. Daniel Pigott went 3 for 5 for the Gators (10-6, 30-8). Greg Larson (5-0, 3 IP, 2 K) picked up the victory. Curt Powell went 3 for 7 with a double and a run for the Bulldogs (7-9, 23-16). Both teams stranded 14 in the 4:56 marathon, the longest game by time in Georgia history.

 

UC Irvine 4, Long Beach State 0

In Long Beach, Calif., Andrew Thurman pitched a no-hitter for UC Irvine in its Big West series opener at Long Beach State. Thurman (4-2) allowed just two base runners while striking out five in recording the fifth no-hitter in program history. Thurman plunked leadoff hitter Jeff McNeil to start the game and then retired 23 straight before surrendering a walk to pinch-hitter Jeff Yamaguchi in the bottom of the eighth for the Dirtbags (7-3, 16-19). In his last start, Thurman held Cal State Fullerton hitless for eight innings before surrendering a leadoff single in the ninth. Christian Ramirez went 3 for 5 with a double and a run, while Jordan Fox was 1 for 4 with a triple, one run and one RBI for the Anteaters (5-5, 20-14).

 

Georgia Tech 11, No. 7 North Carolina 4

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Thomas Smith went 2 for 4 with a double and four RBI as Georgia Tech topped North Carolina in front of 2,457 fans at Boshamer Stadium. The Yellow Jackets (8-11, 23-16) scored two in the second and third before the Tar Heels (12-7, 28-11) tallied a pair in the fifth. Tech put the game away with three in the seventh and four in the eighth. Jake Davies went 2 for 4 with two RBI, while Sam Dove and Brandon Thomas both scored twice for the Jackets. Buck Farmer (6-3, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 K) got the win, while Kent Emanuel (5-3, 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 9 K) suffered the loss. Brian Holberton went 3 for 4 with a run, while Mike Zoik drove in two and Michael Russell had two hits and two runs for UNC.

 

No. 8 UCLA 4, Oregon State 0

In Corvallis, Ore., Adam Plutko allowed two hits in 7.2 innings as UCLA blanked Oregon State to begin their Pac-12 series in front of 1,962 spectators at Goss Stadium. Plutko (5-2) had a no-hitter through six before Michael Comforto led off the seventh with a single. Plutko walked four and struck out five. David Berg worked the final 1.1 innings to preserve the shutout. Beau Amaral homered in the third to start the scoring for the Bruins (11-5, 26-8) and extended his hit streak to a career-best 20. UCLA added two in the fifth and one in the seventh. Cody Keefer went 2 for 3 with two RBI, while Kevin Williams went 1 for 3 with two runs. Ryan Gorton went 1 for 3 with a walk for the Beavers (6-7, 24-12).

 

No. 9 South Carolina 12, Auburn 5

In Auburn, Ala., Connor Bright went 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBI as South Carolina won the SEC series lid-lifter at Auburn in front of 2,949 fans at Plainsman Park. The Gamecocks (9-7, 28-11) scored four in the first and added three in the fourth and four in the fifth to build an 11-0 lead. Grayson Greiner (3 for 3, 2 R) and Joey Pankake (1 for 5) both drove in two for South Carolina. Michael Roth (4-0, 6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 8 K) recorded the win. Garrett Cooper (3 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBI) homered, while Cullen Wacker tripled and knocked in a pair for the Tigers (7-9, 21-17).

 

No. 10 Oregon 6, Washington State 2

In Eugene, Ore., Kyle Garlick led Oregon with a 2-for-3 performance including a solo home run and a triple that totaled three RBI against Washington State in the Pac-12 series opener. The Ducks (11-5, 27-10) used 12 strikeouts to shut down the Cougars (5-7, 18-16). Alex Keudell (6-3) picked up the win after striking out seven and only giving up two runs in seven innings. Thomas Thorpe and Jimmie Sherfy combined to fan five over the final two innings. Sean Hartnett (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. Collin Slaybaugh had two hits and a run for WSU.

 

No. 11 Rice 2, East Carolina 0

In Houston, Matthew Reckling tossed a one-hitter as Rice blanked East Carolina to start their Conference USA series in front of 3,229 fans at Reckling Park. Reckling (7-0) walked two and struck out 10. The lone hit was a leadoff single by Jay Cannon in the top of the fifth. J.T. Chargois (2 for 3) had a RBI single in the first and Jeremy Rathjen homered in the sixth to account for the scoring for the Owls (10-3, 29-11). Kevin Brandt (5-3, 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K) went the distance for the Pirates (8-4-1, 26-12-1). The game took 1:38 after rain delayed the start nearly two hours and 20 minutes.

 

No. 12 Stanford 17, Arizona State 5

In Stanford, Calif., Alex Blandino homered twice and drove in four to lead Stanford past Arizona State to kick off their Pac-12 series. The Cardinal (6-7, 23-10) used an 18-hit attack to claim the victory over the Sun Devils (9-7, 24-14). Mark Appel (5-1) picked up the win after he gave up two runs on six hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Brady Rodgers (6-2) absorbed the loss for the Sun Devils after giving up six earned runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings. Blandino finished with three hits and four runs, while Stephen Piscotty picked up four RBI on three hits for Stanford. Max Rossiter and Rouric Bridgewater both went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI for ASU.

 

No. 13 UCF 1, Tulane 0

In New Orleans, Ben Lively and two relievers combined on the shutout as UCF edged Tulane to start their Conference USA series in front of 2,500 fans at Turchin Stadium. Lively (6-1) scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Roman Madrid allowed two hits in 1.2 innings before Joe Rogers gave up one hit in the ninth with one strikeout to record his eighth save. Jeramy Matos (2 for 3) homered in the top of the seventh for the lone run for the Knights (10-3, 32-8). Ronnie Richardson went 3 for 5 with a double for UCF. Garrett Cannizaro, Sean Potkay and Blake Crohan each had two hits for the Green Wave (5-5, 26-12), which stranded 10.

 

No. 14 Arizona 10, Washington 2

In Seattle, Kurt Heyer threw a complete game while only giving up one earned run on seven hits against Washington to start their Pac-12 series. The Wildcats (11-5, 25-12) scored 10 runs on 11 hits in their victory against the Huskies (5-8, 19-16). Heyer (7-1) walked two and struck out five. Robert Refsnyder led the Wildcats after going 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI. Joey Rickard was 3 for 4 with three doubles, three runs and two RBI for the victors. Aaron West (4-4) took the loss after he gave up four runs on five hits over 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Ryan Wiggins had a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth as Washington avoided the shutout.

 

No. 16 Cal State Fullerton 6, Cal Poly 1

In Fullerton, Calif., Michael Lorenzen went 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Cal State Fullerton over Cal Poly in the Big West series opener. The Titans (8-2, 25-12) were outhit by the Mustangs (5-5, 21-15) 10-9, but Fullerton came out with the victory as Cal Poly stranded nine. Dylan Floro (5-3) picked up the win after going eight innings and only giving up one run on 10 hits while striking out eight. Joey Wagman (5-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. Anthony Hutting went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and one RBI for the Titans. Jimmy Allen had three hits, while Tim Wise went 2 for 4 with a run for the Mustangs.

 

No. 18 Purdue 8, Nebraska 5

In Lincoln, Neb., Cameron Perkins homered twice and drove in three as Purdue outscored Nebraska in the Big Ten series opener in front of 4,708 fans at Haymarket Park to extend its win streak to 10. After a four-run first, Perkins had a solo shot in the top of the second to give the Boilermakers (11-2, 30-5) a 5-0 advantage. The Huskers (7-6, 25-14) tallied two in the third and three in the fourth to even the score at 5 before a two-run blast by Perkins in the fifth put the visitors up for good. Andrew Dixon went 2 for 2 with two RBI, while Kevin Plawecki had two hits and two runs for Purdue. Blake Mascarello (7-1) pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts to register the victory. Michael Pritchard went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI, while Kale Kiser scored twice for Nebraska.

 

Saint Mary’s 7, No. 19 San Diego 1

In San Diego, Martin Agosta allowed one unearned run in seven innings as Saint Mary’s took the WCC series opener at San Diego. Agosta (6-2) surrendered eight hits and four walks while fanning four. Patrick Keane tossed two hitless innings to finish the game. Shawn O’Brien went 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI, while Brenden Kalfus had two hits and two RBI for the Gaels (3-7, 18-17). Corey LeVier went 3 for 4 with a double, while Louis Lechich had two hits and a run for the Toreros (7-3, 29-9).

 

Boston College 11, No. 20 NC State 10

In Raleigh, N.C., Matt McGovern had a three-run double to highlight a five-run eighth as Boston College erased a 7-6 deficit and defeat NC State in front of 1,320 fans at Doak Field. Anthony Melchionda went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs, while Spenser Payne was 2 for 2 with two walks and two runs for the Eagles (6-13, 15-23). Matt Brazis (1-0, 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K) got the win, while John Gorman recorded the final out for his second save. Ryan Mathews homered and drove in three for the Wolfpack (11-8, 24-12).

 

Louisville 6, USF 5

In Tampa, Fla., Louisville scored two in the top of the ninth to erase a 5-4 deficit and nip USF to start their Big East series in front of 1,393 fans at USF Baseball Stadium. Cole Sturgeon (2 for 4, 2 R) had a RBI single to tie it at 5 and came home on a base hit by Zach Lucas (2 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI) as the Cardinals (9-4, 27-11) took a 6-5 lead. Derek Self (1-1, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K) pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win. Nick Ratajczak had two hits and two runs for UL. James Ramsay and Kyle Teaf both had two hits and a run for the Bulls (10-3, 26-13).

 

Missouri State 6, Wichita State 0

In Wichita, Kan., Nick Petree and Tyler Burgess combined on the five-hit shutout as Missouri State blanked Wichita State to kick off their MVC series in front of 3,275 fans at Eck Stadium. Petree (8-2) allowed four hits and three walks in six innings with nine strikeouts to register the victory, while Burgess gave up one hit and one walk over the final three innings with two punchouts to record his ninth save. The Bears (7-2, 28-11) scored five in the second and one in the seventh. Brent Seifert went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI, while Brock Chaffin walked twice and scored a pair for Missouri State. Erik Harbutz had two hits, including a double, for the Shockers (5-5, 23-18).

 

FIU 10, UALR 5

In Miami, three pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts as FIU doubled UALR to open their Sun Belt series. Mason McVay (2 H, 2 R, 5 BB) fanned nine in four innings, while Eddy Pidermann (7-0, 2 H, 1 R) struck out seven in three innings in earning the victory. John Costa (3 H, 2 R, 1 BB) punched out three over the final two innings. Mike Martinez had two extra-base hits and drove in five for the Panthers (10-6, 24-14). He had a sacrifice fly in the first, a run-scoring double in the sixth and a three-run homer in the seventh. Jabari Henry went 2 for 2 with two walks, three runs and two RBI, while T.J. Shantz went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI for FIU. Sean Bignall went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI for the Trojans (5-11, 18-19).

 

Clemson 5, Maryland 4

In College Park, Md., Richie Shaffer had a two-run triple in the top of the ninth to lift Clemson over Maryland to kick off their ACC series. The Terrapins (7-12, 25-15) scored three in the bottom of the eighth to knot the score at 3-3. Jordan Hagel homered in the ninth for Maryland. Phil Pohl went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI, while Jason Stolz went 3 for 5 with two runs for the Tigers (10-9, 22-17). Scott Firth (4-0, 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 2 K) won in relief of Kevin Brady (7 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K). Jack Cleary went 3 for 4 for the Terps.
