Slauter sac fly lifts
Mississippi State past Tennessee in 11
NMSU nips Louisiana
Tech, UVU tops UTPA, IPFW wins at Southern Utah
In
Starkville, Miss., Mitch Slauter delivered a sacrifice fly in
the bottom of the 11th to lift Mississippi State over Tennessee
2-1 Thursday in the SEC series opener in front of 3,725 fans at
Dudy Noble Field. Trey Porter (2 for 4) doubled in the 11th and
scored on the sac fly by Slauter. Tyler Fullerton doubled and
scored on a base hit by Sam Frost in the fifth to put the
Bulldogs on the board. The Volunteers tied it in the eighth on a
base hit by Will Maddox (2 for 5). Caleb Reed (1-5, 2 IP, 2 H, 2
BB, 2 K) got the win in relief of Chris Stratton (9 IP, 4 H, 1
R, 10 K) (pictured left). Zack Godley (7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5
K) put in a solid start for Tennessee.
New Mexico State 3, Louisiana Tech 2
In Las Cruces, N.M., Parker Hipp drove in the
game-winner with a single in the bottom of the ninth as New
Mexico State rallied past Louisiana Tech in the opener of their
WAC series. The Aggies (5-2, 28-11) trailed 2-1 in the ninth
before Kurt Snowley singled and scored the tying run on an
error. Tanner Waite (2 for 2, RBI) walked and scored the winning
run on the base hit by Hipp (2 for 5, 3B). Scott Coffman (2-1, 2
IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief of Ryan Beck (7 IP,
7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K). Jeb Stefan (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 7 BB, 4 K) was
the starter for the Bulldogs (1-6, 17-20). Alex Williams homered
for Louisiana Tech.
Utah Valley 12, Texas-Pan American 5
In Orem, Utah, Goose Kallunki homered twice as
Utah Valley downed Texas-Pan American in a battle for first in
the Great West Conference. The Wolverines (9-0, 23-11) set a
school record with their 16th straight win. Kallunki (2 for 4, 3
RBI) had a two-run homer in a three-run first as UTU took the
early lead. The Broncs (8-1, 21-8) eventually tied the game at 4
with four runs in the top of the fourth. Billy Burgess (3 for 4,
3 R, 2 RBI) had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame
as the Wolverines reclaimed the lead and Austin Heaps (2 for 5,
4 RBI) followed with a two-run triple to give the home team a
7-4 advantage. Ryan Chadwick (3-0, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K)
got the win in relief, while Josh Swenson (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB)
registered his fourth save. Will Klausing went 2 for 3 with two
RBI, while Brandon Roush homered for UTPA.
IPFW 7, Southern Utah 5
In Cedar City, Utah, Shane Trevino went 2 for 3
with a double and two RBI as IPFW defeated Southern Utah to kick
off their Summit series at Thunderbird Park. The Mastadons (4-5,
12-24) snapped a 3-3 tie with four in the sixth. Malcolm White
drove in two, while Clay Hathaway went 2 for 6 with two runs for
IPFW. Chuck Weaver (3-4, 8 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 11 K) earned the
victory, while Steve Danielak pitched a scoreless ninth for his
sixth save. David Headley went 2 for 5 with a double, one run
and one RBI, while Bo Cuthbertson homered for the Thunderbirds
(4-4, 10-25).
