Gold pitches seven innings as Oregon edges UAPB

Georgia nips Liberty, Oregon State blanks Portland, SSU gets past NMSU

 

In Eugene, Ore., Jeff Gold held Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a pair of runs in seven innings as No. 10 Oregon pulled out a 3-2 win Monday in front of 1,043 fans at PK Park. Gold (5-2) held the Lions (6-29-1) scoreless for six innings before the visitors struck for a pair in the top of the seventh. Gold allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three. Thomas Thorpe fanned three in the eighth and Jimmie Sherfy struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save. Kyle Garlick had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for the Ducks (25-10) to snap a 2-2 tie. Thomas Walker went 1 for 3 off the bench with one run and one RBI for Oregon. Sean Samsa had two hits for UAPB.

 

Georgia 5, Liberty 3

In Athens, Ga., Curt Powell had two hits and scored twice as Georgia topped Liberty in front of 1,078 fans at Foley Field. Nelson Ward went 3 for 4 with a run, while Justin Bryan homered for the Bulldogs (23-14). Ross Ripple (2-0, 2 IP, 3 H) earned the win in relief, while Bryan Benzor pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout to register his second save. Alex Close went 3 for 4 with a run, while Andy Smith added two hits and a run for the Flames (30-10).

 

Oregon State 5, Portland 0

In Portland, Ore., Dan Child and two relievers combined on the shutout as Oregon State blanked Portland at Joe Etzel Field. Child (4-2) allowed six hits in 7.1 innings with no walks and nine strikeouts. Matt Boyd worked one inning before Tony Bryant got the final two outs to secure the shutout. Jake Rodriguez (2 for 4) had a three-run homer in the second for the Beavers (24-11). Ryan Gorton went 3 for 4 with a double and one run for OSU. Chet Thompson and Jeff Melby both had two hits for the Pilots (20-11).

 

Sacramento State 8, New Mexico State 7

In Sacramento, Calif., Hunter Adrian went 4 for 5 with a double, a homer and four RBI as Sacramento State won a non-conference contest against New Mexico State. The Aggies (27-11) scored in each of the first four innings in building a 5-0 lead before the Hornets (19-18) tallied one in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the eighth. Trevor Paine walked twice and scored a pair, while Brent Hottman had two hits and one RBI for Sacramento State. Daniel Kopas (2-0, 2.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) got the win in relief, while R.J. Davis (1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K) notched his sixth save. Kyle Phillips had two hits and drove in three for NMSU.
