In Wilmington, N.C., Jeff Hoffman tossed 6.1
scoreless innings as East Carolina blanked UNC Wilmington 5-0
Tuesday in front of 2,078 fans at Brooks Field. Hoffman (1-0)
scattered five hits, walked two and struck out a career-best
seven. Tanner Merritt (1.2 IP, 1 BB) registered his fifth save.
The Pirates (20-8) scored three in the third and two in the
ninth. Jay Cannon drove in three, while Drew Reynolds and Corey
Thompson both had two hits and two runs for ECU. Hunter Ridge
and Drew Farber both went 2 for 3 for the Seahawks (15-13).
North Florida 10, No. 1 Florida 5
In Jacksonville, Fla., T.J. Gavlik went 2 for 4
with a triple and three RBI as North Florida knocked off Florida
in front of 2,144 fans at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys (18-13)
scored in six of their first seven at-bats, including four in
the bottom of the second. Michael Wesner went 3 for 4 with two
runs, while Alex Bacon went 2 for 5 with a double, two runs and
two RBI for UNF. Andrew Karmeeris went 2 for 5 with a homer and
two runs for the Ospreys. Chandle Jagodzinski (1-0, 2 IP, 1 H, 1
K) earned the win in relief. Daniel Pigott (2B, 2 R, 1 RBI) and
Casey Turgeon both had three hits for the Gators (24-5).
No. 6 Texas A&M 4, UTSA 3
In College Station, Texas, Tyler Naquin had a
two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh as Texas A&M edged
UTSA in front of 3,785 at Blue Bell Park. Following the home run
by Naquin (2 for 4, 3 RBI), the game was delayed for 1:33 and
later called due to lightning and rain. The Roadrunners (11-18)
scored in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Mikey
Reynolds went 1 for 3 with two runs for the Aggies (23-6).
Parker Ray (1-0, 1 IP) earned the victory. Matthew James went 2
for 3 with two runs for UTSA.
Sam Houston State 2, No. 10 Rice 1
In Houston, Michael Oros tossed five scoreless
innings as Sam Houston State nipped Rice in front of 3,155 fans
at Reckling Park. Oros (4-0) allowed three hits and three walks
while striking out four. Michael Burchett gave up two hits and
one walk in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts in registering his
second save. In the top of the second, J Hale had a run-scoring
double and J Plumlee added a RBI groundout as the Bearkats
(20-9) led 2-0. Jeremy Rathjen homered in the eighth for the
Owls (21-10). SHSU extended its win streak to nine.
No. 9 LSU 10, Louisiana College 2
In Baton Rouge, La., Tyler Moore went 3 for 4
with a double and three RBI as LSU beat Louisiana College. The
Tigers (23-6) scored four in the third and fifth in building a
10-2 lead after five. Jared Foster went 3 for 5 with three runs
and one RBI, while Jordy Snikeris had three hits, including a
double, for LSU. Brent Bonvillain (1-0, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2
K) recorded the victory. Cole Bagbey had a hit and a run for the
Wildcats (10-15).
No. 15 Cal State Fullerton 7, San Diego State
1
In San Diego, Richy Pedroza went 3 for 4 with two
runs and two RBI as Cal State Fullerton defeated San Diego State
in front of a crowd of 1,246 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Austin
Kingsolver went 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI for the Titans
(18-10). Koby Gauna (3-2, 5 IP, 2 H, 1 UE, 1 BB, 4 K) registered
the win. Tim Zier went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI for the
Aztecs (14-16).
No. 20 Oregon State 8, Portland 2
In Corvallis, Ore., Ryan Gorton went 2 for 4 with
a double, two runs and one RBI, and struck out four in 1.2
innings of relief, as Oregon State downed Portland. The Beavers
(18-8) scored two in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh. Tyler
Smith drove in three, while Kavin Keyes went 3 for 4 with one
run for OSU. Scott Schultz (3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 K) picked up
the win. Kris Kauppila went 2 for 4 with one run for the Pilots
(16-7).
The Citadel 3, Coastal Carolina 0
In Charleston, S.C., Kevin Connell hurled seven
shutout innings as The Citadel blanked Coastal Carolina in front
of 1,013 fans at Joseph P. Riley Park. Connell (1-2) allowed
four hits and five walks while striking out four. Ryan Hines
(1.1 IP, 1 K) recorded his second save. The Bulldogs (12-16)
scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth. Mason Davis went
2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs for The Citadel. Daniel
Bowman went 3 for 4 with a double for the Chanticleers (18-9).
Dallas Baptist 4, TCU 3
In Fort Worth, Texas, Ronnie Mitchell went 2 for
4 with two runs and Dallas Baptist nipped TCU in front of 3,480
fans at Lupton Stadium. The Patriots (18-9) built a 4-0 lead
before the Horned Frogs (14-12) closed the gap. Jay Calhoun
(1-1, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K) recorded the win, while Michael
Smith (3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 UE, 2 K) notched his third save. Jason
Coats went 3 for 4 with two runs for TCU.
Louisville 9, Western Kentucky 2
In Louisville, Ky., Stewart Ijames went 2 for 4
with a homer and four RBI as Louisville downed Western Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers (12-17) scored their two runs in the top of the
first before the Cardinals (21-8) tallied two in the fourth,
four in the fifth and three in the eighth. Zak Wasserman had a
three-run homer in the eighth for UL. Jared Ruxer (4-0, 5.1 IP,
3 H, 2 R, 1 UE, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the win. Blake Crabtree and
Casey Dykes both had a hit and a run for WKU.
George Washington 9, Towson 1
In Arlington, Va., J.T. Wauford allowed one hit
in seven scoreless innings as George Washington defeated Towson
to give head coach Steve Mrowka his 600th career victory.
Wauford (2-2) walked three and struck out four. The Colonials
(11-17) led 1-0 after six before plating eight in the bottom of
the seventh. Brett Bowers (2 for 4, 2B, 1R), Jimmy Best (2 for
4, 2 2B, 1 R) and Stephen Oswald (1 for 3, 2B, 1 R) each drove
in two, while Owen Beightol went 3 for 4 with two runs and one
RBI for GWU. Ryne Willard had two of the four hits for the
Tigers (11-11).
UNLV 21, Southern Utah 6
In Cedar City, Utah, Trevor Kirk went 5 for 5
with five runs and three RBI as UNLV stomped Southern Utah. Kirk
had a double and a home run among his five hits. After trailing
1-0 after one, the Rebels (14-15) scored three in the second,
two in the third, five in the fifth, four in the sixth and seven
in the eighth. Trent Cook (4 for 4, 2B, HR, 3 R, 5 RBI) and
Brandon Bayardi (4 for 6, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI) both had four hits for
UNLV. Mark Shannon (2-2, 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 K) picked up
the win. Tariq Staton went 3 for 5 with two runs and one RBI,
while Bo Cuthbertson had two hits, including a homer, and three
RBI for the Thunderbirds (6-21).
Liberty Bell Classic Semifinals
Saint Joseph’s 3, Delaware 2
In Merion Station, Pa., Daniel Thorpe combined
with two relievers to lead Saint Joseph’s past Delaware, putting
the Hawks in the title game for the first time since 2003. The
Hawks (9-20) will face Penn on April 17 at Citizens Bank Park.
Thorpe allowed seven hits and one run in 4.2 innings with four
strikeouts. Mike Muha (2-1, 2.1 IP, 1 BB, 4 K) earned the win in
relief, while Steven Schuler surrendered one hit and one run
with one strikeout over the final two innings for his second
save. Stefan Kancylarz (1 for 3) had a sacrifice fly in the
third to snap a 1-1 tie. Kevin Taylor had two hits, including a
double, and one RBI for Saint Joseph’s. Jimmy Yezzo homered for
the Blue Hens (14-15).
Penn 9, La Salle 4
In Philadelphia, Ryan Dietrich went 3 for 4 with
two doubles, a homer, two runs and four RBI as Penn outscored La
Salle to reach the championship game of the Liberty Bell
Classic. The Quakers (12-10) will meet Saint Joseph’s on April
17 at Citizens Bank Park. Penn scored four in the top of the
second and never looked back. Rich Brebner went 2 for 4 with a
homer, two runs and two RBI, while Greg Zebrack had three hits,
including a pair of doubles, and two runs for the Quakers. Matt
Gotschall (2-2, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K) earned the win.
George Smith, Jr., homered and knocked in two, while Dan Klem
also had two RBI for the Explorers (15-13).
