Coyle's grand slam helps North Carolina top NC State

USC beats Stanford, Washington State wins at UCLA & Long Beach State

 

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Tommy Coyle belted a grand slam in the second as fifth-ranked North Carolina won its ACC series against No. 17 NC State 7-4 Monday in front of 2,928 fans at Boshamer Stadium. Jacob Stallings had a RBI groundout in the first and a two-run homer in the seventh for the Tar Heels (7-2, 19-5). R.C. Orlan (4-0, 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 K) won in relief, while Michael Morin (2.1 IP, 1 BB, 3 K) recorded his eighth save. Jake Fincher went 3 for 4 with a double and one run, while Chris Diaz drove in two for the Wolfpack (6-3, 16-6).

 

USC 8, No. 2 Stanford 4

In Stanford, Calif., Garrett Stubbs had a two-run triple and scored in a five-run first as USC won the finale of its Pac-12 series at Stanford. Kevin Roundtree went 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI for the Trojans (2-4, 14-8). Stephen Tarpley (4-0, 6.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 K) earned the win, while Wyatt Strahan (1.1 IP, 1 BB) notched his second save. Austin Wilson drove in two, while Kenny Diekroeger had two hits and two runs for the Cardinal (2-1, 15-3).

 

Washington State 11, Long Beach State 1

In Long Beach, Calif., Patrick Claussen went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI as Washington State won at Long Beach State for its second victory of the day. The Cougars (12-10) scored four in the top of the first to take control. Adam Nelubowich had two hits and four runs for WSU. Tanner Chleborad (1-0, 6 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 7 K) earned the victory. Richard Prigatano doubled and drove in a run for the Dirtbags (8-15).

 

Washington State 10, No. 9 UCLA 4

In Los Angeles, Adam Nelubowich and Ty Jackson both had two hits, including a homer, and three RBI as Washington State won the finale of its Pac-12 series at UCLA. Jackson’s three-run blast came in a four-run first, while Nelubowich added a two-run shot in a five-run second as the Cougars (2-4, 11-10) built a 9-0 lead. Kyle Swannack (2-2, 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 K) got the win, while Scott Simon (4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB) picked up his second save. Trevor Brown went deep for the Bruins (4-2, 17-5).

 

Pacific 16, Brown 6

In Stockton, Calif., Josh Simms had four hits and three RBI as Pacific pounded Brown to complete a four-game sweep. Dustin Torchio also had four hits and one RBI, while Curtis Gomez added three hits and three RBI for the Tigers (8-16). Chris Larsen (1-0, 5 H, 3 K) hurled 6.2 scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. John Sheridan had two hits and two runs for the Bears (1-11).

 

Nevada 5, UC Davis 4

In Davis, Calif., Joe Kohan went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI as Nevada nipped UC Davis. Carlos Escobar, Jr. had three hits and two runs, while Kyle Hunt belted a two-run homer for the Wolf Pack (13-10). Barry Timko (1-0, 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K) earned the win in relief, while Matt Gardner (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 K) registered his sixth save. Brett Morgan had three hits and one RBI for the Aggies (10-10).

 

San Diego 12, Santa Clara 4

In San Diego, Kris Bryant went 2 for 3 with a homer, two runs and two RBI as San Diego completed a three-game West Coast Conference sweep of Santa Clara. Andrew Daniel had two doubles and three runs for the Toreros (3-0, 21-6). Dylan Covey (3-1, 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) picked up the win, while James Pazos (4 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K) recorded his second save. Zach Looney had two hits and two RBI for the Broncos (0-3, 13-7).
