Miller delivers four hits as Purdue downs Wichita State

ORU nips Missouri State, Nevada beats UCI, Indiana State edges Kansas

 

In Wichita, Kan., Purdue scored five in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 deadlock on its way to an 8-3 win Thursday over Wichita State, its ninth straight victory. CBI journalist David Miller (right) went 4 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBI, while Tyler Spillner added two hits and two RBI for Purdue. Kevin Plawecki had two doubles and two runs for the Boilers. Jack DeAno (2-0, 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K) got the win in relief. Don Lambert went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Shockers (10-9).

 

Oral Roberts 1, Missouri State 0

In Tulsa, Okla., Drew Bowen outdueled Pierce Johnson as Oral Roberts edged Missouri State. Bowen (3-1) allowed six hits and one walk in nine scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the Golden Eagles (9-7). Johnson (1-3) gave up four hits, three walks and one run in eight innings while matching a career high with 12 strikeouts. Nate Goro had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth to account for the game’s lone run. Brock Chaffin and Luke Voit both had two hits for the Bears (12-6) in the 1:54 contest.

 

Nevada 8, UC Irvine 3

In Reno, Nev., Jay Anderson and Carlos Escobar, Jr. both drove in two as Nevada won its series opener with UC Irvine. The Wolf Pack (10-6) scored a pair in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh. Joe Kohan went 3 for 4 with a home run for Nevada. Braden Shipley (4-1, 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 2 K) earned the victory. Tommy Reyes and Jeff Stephens both had two hits and a run for the Anteaters (9-8).

 

Indiana State 2, Kansas 1

In San Antonio, Dakota Bacus allowed one run in eight innings as Indiana State edged Kansas on the first day of the Irish Classic. Bacus (3-1) allowed five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Tyler Browning got a strikeout with the winning runs on base to end the game and notch his first save. Jeremy Lucas had a sacrifice fly in the third and a run-scoring double in the seventh as the Sycamores (13-4) took a 2-0 lead. Dakota Smith had a RBI groundout in the eighth as Kansas pulled with one. Koby Kraemer and Robby Ort both had three hits for Indiana State. James Stanfirld went 3 for 4 for the Jayhawks.

 

Notre Dame 7, Houston Baptist 3

In San Antonio, Eric Jagielo went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI as Notre Dame downed Houston Baptist on the opening day of the Irish Classic. After a run-scoring single in the first, Jagielo had a three-run double in a four-run second as the Irish (9-5) took a 5-1 lead. Alex Robinson went 3 for 4 with one run, while Frank DeSico went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and one RBI for Notre Dame. Matt Ternowchek (1-0) allowed one hit in five scoreless innings with two strikeouts to register the victory. Collin Hetzler drove in two, while Jake Gonzalez had two hits, including a triple, for the Huskies (4-12).

 

Nebraska 9, Louisiana Tech 2

In Lincoln, Neb., Chad Christensen went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBI as Nebraska downed Louisiana Tech. After the Bulldogs (9-8) tied it at 2 in the top of the fifth, the Huskers (12-6) put up two in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the eighth. Cory Burleson went 2 for 3 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for Nebraska. Zach Hirsch (2-1, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 K) recorded the victory, while Brandon Pierce (1.2 IP, 3 BB, 1 K) earned his first save. Sam Alvis had two hits and a run for Tech.

 

UC Santa Barbara 10, Rhode Island 7

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Greg Mahle went 2 for 3 with three RBI as UC Santa Barbara outscored Rhode Island. The Gauchos (8-9) scored six in the fourth to take an 8-4 advantage. Brett Vertigan went 2 for 4 with three runs for UCSB. Austin Pettibone (3-1, 6 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) picked up the victory, while Zak Edgington allowed one hit over the final three scoreless innings with two strikeouts to earn his first save. Milan Adams had two doubles, a homer and two RBI for the Rams (6-9).

 

Iowa 6, Jacksonville State 3

In Winter Haven, Fla., Iowa scored four in the bottom of the eighth to rally past Jacksonville State. The Hawkeyes (6-9) tallied single runs in the first and fifth before the Gamecocks (2-12) put up three in the top of the eighth. Mike McQuillan went 1 for 2 with two walks and three runs, while Jacob Yacinich went 3 for 3 with one RBI for Iowa. Nick Brown (1-0, 1.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) got the victory. Erik Underwood and Andre Bishop both had two hits for JSU.

 

North Dakota State 2, Chicago State 1

In Winter Haven, Fla., Zach Wentz had a pair of run-scoring doubles as North Dakota State nipped Chicago State. Wentz (3 for 4) drove in Tim Colwell (2 for 3) in the first for an early lead and again in the bottom of the eighth for the Bison (11-5) to snap a 1-1 tie. Kyle Kingsley (1-1) pitched the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts to pick up the win. Starter John Straka (6 H, 1 R, 2 BB) struck out eight in 7.1 innings. Albert Capren went 3 for 4 with one RBI for the Cougars (0-14).

 

Hawaii 2, San Francisco 1

In Honolulu, Joe Goldenberg had a two-run single in the seventh to lift Hawaii over San Francisco. It was one of three hits for the Rainbows (12-6). Collin Bennett went 1 for 2 with two walks and a run for UH. Matt Sisto (4-1, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 UE, 3 K) earned the victory, while Brent Harrison got a game-ending double play for his third save. Brendan Hendriks went 1 for 3 with one RBI for the Dons (9-9).

 

San Diego 14, Columbia 5

In San Diego, Louie Lechich went 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBI as San Diego downed Columbia in the opener of a four-game set. Kris Bryant went 2 for 3 with three runs and one RBI, while Connor Joe homered and Dillon Haupt drove in four for the Toreros (15-5). Calvin Drummond (4-1, 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) earned the win. Eric Williams, Dario Pizzano and Mike Fischer each had one hit and one RBI for the Lions (2-9).

 

Akron 8, Fairfield 4

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sam Trecaso went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and two RBI as Akron doubled Fairfield. The Zips (4-11) scored all their runs over the final four innings, with four in the sixth, two in the eighth and two in the ninth. The Stags (6-9) scored all their runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kurt Gamby went 2 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI for Akron. Andrew Brown (2-3, 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) was the starter and winner. Dean Sadik went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI for Fairfield.

 

Eastern Illinois 6, Bucknell 5 (11)

In Auburndale, Fla., Eastern Illinois tied it in the seventh and 10th and won it with a run in the bottom of the 11th in edging Bucknell. Ryan Dineen drew a two-out walk in the 11th for the Panthers (6-10) and stole second before scoring the winning run on an error. T.J. McManus had three doubles, scored one and drove in one. Troy Barton (2-1, 2 IP, 2 K) earned the victory. Scott Reed had a three-run homer in the fourth and Bob Donato went deep in the top of the 11th for the Bison (7-7).
