Fresno State edges San
Francisco
UC Irvine beats BYU, Santa Clara tops Utah,
SJSU downs Lehigh
In
Fresno, Calif., Justin Haley struck out nine in seven innings,
both career highs, as Fresno State nipped San Francisco 2-1
Thursday. Haley allowed three hits, two walks and one unearned
run. Thomas Harlan (2-2) fanned two in a hitless eighth to earn
the win. Taylor Garrison worked around two hits in the ninth to
notch his second save. Ted LeMasters doubled and scored in the
top of the fourth for the Dons (7-7). Austin Wynns of the
Bulldogs (6-7) doubled and scored on an error in the sixth to
tie it at 1. Aaron Judge (right) walked and scored on a wild
pitch in the eighth to give Fresno State the lead. Justin
Charles went 2 for 2 for the Bulldogs.
UC Irvine 3, BYU 1
In Irvine, Calif., Scott Gottchling had a
three-run double in the bottom of the first as UC Irvine got
past BYU. Kyle Hooper (3-0, 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K) earned
the win, while Jimmy Litchfield recorded the final out for his
first save. Christian Ramirez went 2 for 3 with a double and a
run for the Anteaters (7-5). Wes Guenther went 2 for 4 for the
Cougars (4-5).
Santa Clara 4, Utah 1
In Santa Clara, Calif., Tommy Nance allowed one
run in eight innings as Santa Clara topped Utah on the first day
of the third annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament. Nance
(3-0) allowed seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Paul Twining fanned two in a scoreless ninth for his fourth
save. Peter Summerville went 3 for 4 with a triple, one run and
one RBI for the Broncos (11-3). James Brooks had three hits,
including a homer, for the Utes (2-10).
San Jose State 8, Lehigh 4
In San Jose, Calif., Nick Schulz homered twice as
San Jose State doubled Lehigh in the opening game of the third
annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament. Schulz had a solo shot
in the third and added a three-run dinger in the fifth as the
Spartans (5-8) built a 5-0 lead. Andre Mercurio scored twice,
while Cabel Natov went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI for
SJSU. Johnny Melero (1-3, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER) struck out seven in
eight innings to earn the victory. Alex Jacquez homered and
drove in two, while Chad Warga went 3 for 4 for the Mountain
Hawks (2-7).
Wofford 5, Presbyterian 4
In Greenville, S.C., Taylor Rozier had a two-run
single in a five-run third as Wofford edged Presbyterian.
Brandon Yarusi (2-0, 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K) picked up the
win, while Eric Eck (1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 K) earned his third save.
Kenny Bryant had a two-run homer in the eighth for the Blue Hose
(5-10).
Western Michigan 11, Penn 4
In Winter Haven, Fla., Casey Webber recorded his
second career complete game as Western Michigan downed Penn.
Webber (2-1) allowed seven hits and four unearned runs with no
walks and six strikeouts. Jared Kujawa (2 for 4), Ryan McMillin
(1 for 4) and Patrick Duncan (1 for 4) each had two runs and two
RBI for the Broncos (5-7). Greg Zebrack (2 for 3) had a two-run
homer for the Quakers (2-4).
Yale 11, Bowling Green 9
In Winter Haven, Fla., Josh Scharff went 2 for 5
with a double, two runs and three RBI as Yale outscored Bowling
Green. The Bulldogs (2-4) built an 11-0 lead and held off the
Falcons (3-9). Kevin Fortunato (3 for 4, 2B), Charlie Neil (2
for 3, 3B) and David Toups (1 for 3) each drove in two for Yale.
O’Hare (1-1, 5 H, 2 BB) pitched six scoreless innings with six
strikeouts to earn the victory. Fortunato got the final out with
a strikeout to record his second save. Brandon Howard went 4 for
6 with two RBI for BGSU.
Pittsburgh 6, Xavier 5
In Port Charlotte, Fla., Matt Iannazzo tied a
program record with his 24th career victory as Pittsburgh edged
Xavier. Iannazzo (3-0) allowed eight hits and three runs (two
earned) with six strikeouts. Tanner Wilt (1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 K)
earned his third save. Casey Roche had two hits, including a
double, and two RBI, while Elvin Soto homered for the Panthers
(6-5). Brian Bruening went 2 for 4 with three RBI for the
Musketeers (4-9).
Miami (Ohio) 8, Sacred Heart 2
In Port Charlotte, Fla., Mac Thoreson went the
distance with six strikeouts as Miami downed Sacred Heart.
Thoreson (1-2) allowed six hits and one earned run with one
walk. John Crummy went 2 for 3 with three RBI, while Jacob Wolf
doubled and drove in two for the RedHawks (5-7). Hunter Phillips
and Derick Horn both had one hit and one RBI for the Pioneers
(1-7).
UIC 5, Northwestern 2
In Chicago, Nick Addison and Joe Betcher both had
two hits as UIC won its home opener against Northwestern.
Addison scored once, while Betcher had a RBI double for the
Flames (3-8). Joey Begel (1-3, 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K)
earned the win, while Collin Weyer (1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K) registered
his first save. Paul Snieder went 3 for 4 with a home run for
the Wildcats (3-8).
