Crawford hurls no-hitter for Florida

Gainesville Regional

Jonathon Crawford (right) tossed a no-hitter as Florida shut down Bethune-Cookman in front of 3,285 fans at McKethan Stadium. The Gators (43-18) will face Georgia Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Wildcats (34-26) will meet College of Charleston in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Crawford (6-2) walked one, struck out five and faced the minimum 27. He walked Jake Welch with one out in the third and Welch was thrown out trying to steal second. Crawford needed just 98 pitches (70 strikes) to go the career-high nine innings. His longest previous stint had been six innings. Casey Turgeon, who went 3 for 4 with four RBI, made a leaping catch of a line drive at second base with two away in the ninth to preserve the no-hitter. Turgeon had a RBI single in the second and a three-run homer in the fifth. It was the first complete-game no-hitter since May 23, 1991, when John Burke no-hit Furman in a 2-0 win at McKethan Stadium in the East Region opener. (photo by T. In the earlier game, Brandon Thomas went 4 for 4 and Jake Davies drove in four as Georgia Tech doubled College of Charleston. Davies (2 for 4) had a three-run homer in the first, his fifth postseason dinger, as the Yellow Jackets (37-24) took a 3-1 lead. Marty Gantt (2 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) belted a two-run homer in the top of the second as the Cougars (37-21) tied it at 3. Thomas added a three-run bomb to cap a four-run second as Tech took a 7-3 lead. Sam Dove finished with two hits and three runs for the Jackets. Dusty Isaacs (6-4, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 4 K) got the win in relief. Brandon Murray went 3 for 5 with two RBI for CofC.

 

Waco Regional

Bennett Pickar and Logan Domenico both had RBI doubles and scored in a three-run sixth as Oral Roberts upset Baylor in front of 3,678 fans at Baylor Ballpark. The Golden Eagles (37-24) will face Dallas Baptist on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT, while the Bears (44-15) will meet UT Arlington at 2 p.m. CT in an elimination game. Nick Goro added a home run in the eighth for ORU. Drew Bowen (7-2, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K) earned the win, while Joe Spring (3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 K) registered his third save. Josh Ludy (2 for 4) went deep for BU. Josh Turley (9-1, 5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) suffered his first loss.

 

In the earlier contest, senior Taylor Massey picked a perfect time for his first complete-game shutout. Massey, a lefty, allowed four hits – three to Matt Shortall – and struck out five as Dallas Baptist blanked UT Arlington. Joel Hutter gave Massey and the Patriots (40-19) plenty of support, going 3 for 5 with five RBI, and Landon Anderson contributed two hits, including a triple, and two RBI. DBU scored four times in the bottom of the third, three of the runs coming with two outs on a RBI single by Boomer Collins and a two-run single by Hutter. Hutter singled in another run in the fifth before Anderson hit a sac fly for a 6-0 lead. Duncan McAlpine went 3 for 4 with a homer and two runs for the Patriots. The Mavericks (36-24) mustered only one hit other than Shortall’s three singles.

 

Gary Regional

Joe Haase allowed one run in seven innings as Purdue downed Valparaiso in front of 5,047 fans at U.S. Steel Yard. The Boilermakers (45-12) will face Kent State at 7 p.m. CT, while the Crusaders (35-24) will battle Kentucky at 2 p.m. CT in an elimination game. Haase (11-1) allowed six hits and one walk while striking out seven. Blake Mascarello (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K) worked the eighth, while Nick Wittgren (pictured) struck out two in a scoreless ninth. Purdue scored a pair in the third, sixth and seventh. Aaron Nola fanned 10 in eighth innings as LSU defeated ULM in front of 9,902 fans at Alex Box Stadium. Nola (7-4) allowed four hits, one walk and one run. Chris Cotton worked a scoreless ninth for his first save. The Tigers (44-16) will face Oregon State on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT, while the Warhawks (31-29) will meet Belmont in an elimination game at 2 p.m. CT. Both teams scored single runs in the third, while LSU put up three in the seventh to break the deadlock. Austin Nola and Tyler Hanover both went 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Tigers. Les Aulds went 1 for 4 with an RBI for ULM. Former Tiger Randy Zeigler (6.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) took the loss.

 

In the first game, Ryan Barnes had a RBI bunt single in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie as Oregon State edged Belmont. Joey Matthews had a leadoff double and moved to third on a groundout. Barnes (2 for 3, R) pushed a safety squeeze to the right side, hitting first base and allowing Matthews to score the eventual game-winner. Barnes doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kavin Keyes as the Beavers (39-18) took the early lead in the second. Dylan Craig tripled and scored in the fifth for the Bruins (39-23). Tony Bryant (6-2, 1.2 IP, 1 H) got the win in relief of Jace Fry (5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K). Matt Boyd (2.1 IP, 1 H, 3 K) earned his third save. The Beavers finished with just three hits. Chase Brookshire (8-4, 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K) was the tough-luck loser. Alec Diamond had two hits for Belmont.

 

Chapel Hill Regional

Colin Moran (left) had four hits to lead North Carolina past Cornell in front of 1,677 fans at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (45-14) will face St. John’s on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Big Red (31-16-1) will meet East Carolina at 1 p.m. in an elimination contest. UNC scored one in the first and Moran had a RBI single in a four-run fourth as the Heels built a 5-0 lead. Jacob Stallings (2 for 5) and Adam Griffin both drove in two for UNC. Hobbs Johnson (7-1, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 5 K) earned the win, while Michael Morin (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) earned his 18th save. In the day’s first game, St. John’s pounded out 16 hits and scored in six different innings in thumping East Carolina. Matt Wessinger went 3 for 5 with two RBI, while Jeremy Baltz went 2 for 4 with a homer and three runs for the Red Storm (38-21). St. John’s scored single runs in the second and third before a three-run fifth made it 5-0. Kyle Hansen (5-5, 7.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 8 K) earned the victory. Corey Thompson had two hits and two RBI for the Pirates (35-23-1).

The Aggies (43-16) will face Ole Miss on Saturday at 6:35 p.m., while the Flyers (31-29) meet TCU in an elimination game at 12:35 p.m. Wacha (9-1) allowed five hits and walked three. Kyle Martin retired the final four batters to record his seventh save. Texas A&M (43-16) scored single runs in three of the first four innings. In the earlier game, Austin Bousfield walked on a full count with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth to give Ole Miss its first, and Sikes Orvis then drove in two more with a single up the middle as the Rebels (36-24) topped TCU. Bobby Wahl (7-3) tossed seven solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts before giving way to R.J. Hively closed with three strikeouts in two innings. Preston Morrison pitched into the seventh for the Frogs (36-20) with six hits and two runs. Brandon Finnegan (3-4) suffered the loss for TCU. Kevin Cron drove in both runs for the Frogs.

 

Columbia Regional

#1 South Carolina 7, #4 Manhattan 0

#2 Clemson 11, #3 Coastal Carolina 3

 

Colby Holmes carried a no-hitter into the eighth as South Carolina blanked Manhattan. The Gamecocks (41-17) will face Clemson on Saturday at 4 p.m., while the Jaspers (33-26) will meet College of Charleston in an elimination game at noon. South Carolina has won a NCAA-record 17 consecutive postseason games and has won 20 straight home postseason contests, including 9-0 at Carolina Stadium. Holmes (7-1) allowed a single by Joe Rock with two away in the eighth, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high nine. A lightning delay in the bottom of the eighth prevented Holmes from going for a complete game. After being no-hit for five innings, the Gamecocks erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Adam Matthews went 2 for 4 with three RBI, while Christian Walker went deep for the Gamecocks.

 

In the first game, Phil Pohl had a grand slam and drove in five as Clemson clobbered Coastal Carolina. Pohl’s slam came in a five-run second as the Tigers (34-26) built a 6-0 lead. Jason Stolz had two doubles and drove in a pair, while Richie Shaffer scored four for Clemson. Kevin Pohle (7-4, 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 1 K) got the win, while David Haselden (4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 1 K) earned his first save. Brian Pruett had two hits and one RBI for the Chanticleers (41-18).

 

Houston Regional

#1 Rice 3, #4 Prairie View A&M 2

#2 Arkansas 5, #3 Sam Houston State 4

 

John Simms and Tyler Duffey combined on the two-hitter as Rice edged Prairie View A&M in front of 3,361 fans at Reckling Park. The Owls (41-17) will play Arkansas on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT, while the Panthers (28-24) will face Sam Houston State at 1 p.m. CT in an elimination contest. Simms (6-0, 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) earned the win, while Duffey pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts for his seventh save. Michael Fuda smacked a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh for Rice to snap a 2-2 tie. Colby Hines had a two-run double in the second for Prairie View.

 

In the first game, Tim Carver had a two-run single to tie it at 4 and Matt Reynolds followed with a RBI fielder’s choice to plate the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh as Arkansas rallied past Sam Houston State. Reynolds went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI. Brandon Moore (5-2, 3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB) earned the victory for the Razorbacks (40-19) in relief of D.J. Baxendale (6 IP, 6 H, 4 UE, 2 BB, 6 K). Jake Arrington had a two-run triple to cap a four-run fifth as the Bearkats (38-21) took a 4-2 lead.

 

Raleigh Regional

#1 NC State 16, #4 Sacred Heart 5

#2 Vanderbilt 8, #3 UNC Wilmington 2

 

Ryan Mathews homered and drove in four as NC State spanked Sacred Heart in front of 2,495 fans at Doak Field. The Wolfpack (40-17) will face Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Saturday, while the Pioneers (25-31) will meet UNCW at 2 p.m. Mathews went 3 for 5 with three runs, while Brett Austin drove in three for NC State. The Wolfpack scored four in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and seven in the sixth. Vance Williams (4-3, 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 8 K) earned the win, while Dillon Frye (3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB) got his first save. Hunter Phillips drove in three for Sacred Heart.

 

In the first game, T.J. Pecoraro struck out eight in 7.2 innings as Vanderbilt downed UNC Wilmington. Pecoraro (2-4) allowed six hits and two runs. The Commodores (34-26) scored two in the third and four in the fourth in building a 6-0 lead. Anthony Gomez went 2 for 4 with three RBI for VU. Hunter Ridge went 3 for 4 with a run, while Thomas Pope had a two-run homer in the seventh for the Seahawks (38-22).

 

Stanford Regional

The Cardinal (39-16) will face Pepperdine on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT, while the Bulldogs (30-27) will meet Michigan State in an elimination game at 1 p.m. PT. Appel (10-1) allowed one earned run and walked a pair. Stanford snapped a scoreless tie with two in the fifth and added three in the sixth and four in the eighth. In the earlier contest, Jon Moscot went the distance as Pepperdine downed Michigan State. Moscot (7-5) allowed 10 hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts. The Waves (35-21) scored two in the third and four in the sixth. Matt Gelalich drove in three, including a two-run double in the sixth for Pepperdine. Ryan Jones went 2 for 5 with a run for the Spartans (37-22).

 

Tucson Regional

#1 Arizona 15, #4 Missouri 3

Joey Rickard went 3 for 5 with three runs and four RBI as Arizona pounded Missouri in front of 5,086 fans at Hi Corbett Field. The Wildcats (39-17) will meet Louisville on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST, while the Tigers (32-27) will play New Mexico State at 1 p.m. MST. Arizona erased a 3-2 deficit with a seven-run fourth, while adding three in the seventh and eighth. Rickard was a homer short of the cycle. Bobby Brown was 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI for the Wildcats. Blake Brown (2 for 2, 2B, 3B, 2 BB, R, RBI) led the Missouri offense.

 

In the earlier game, Justin Amlung and Travis Tingle combined to hold New Mexico State to a pair of runs as Louisville claimed the win. Amlung (9-4, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) got the victory, while Tingle retired the nine batters he faced with one strikeout for his first save. The Aggies (35-23) scored single runs in the first and third before the Cardinals (40-20) tallied one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Nick Ratajczak went 2 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI for Louisville. Zac Fisher drove in both runs for NMSU.
