COLUMBUS,
Ohio – The top players rose to the occasion.
Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Joe Haase pitched
eight solid innings and Big Ten Player of the Year Kevin
Plawecki (right) belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the
seventh to erase a 3-2 deficit as top-seeded Purdue edged
sixth-seeded Ohio State 5-4 in the Big Ten Tournament at
Huntington Park.
Haase (10-1) allowed six hits and three runs with
no walks and one strikeout.
OSU had reclaimed the lead in the top of the
sixth. With two away, Brad Hallberg singled and scored on a
triple by Mike Carroll to knot the score at 2-2. Josh Dezse
followed with a double to plate Carroll with the go-ahead run.
The Buckeyes scored in the top of the first as
Tim Wetzel had a leadoff single, moved to third on a base hit by
Ryan Cypret and scored on a safety squeeze by Carroll.
Plawecki had a sacrifice fly in the first to tie
the game at 1 and David Miller doubled and scored in the second
to give the Boilermakers a 2-1 edge.
Purdue added an insurance run in the eighth as
Stephen Talbott had a leadoff single and scored on a fielder’s
choice by Cameron Perkins to make it 5-3.
