Q&A with Pat Murphy (2/25/12)
Murphy named Triple-A manager
in Tucson
Former
Arizona State and Notre Dame head coach Pat Murphy has been
hired as the manager of the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A affiliate
in Tucson, Ariz.
For the past two seasons, Murphy was manager of
the Padres’ short-season Single-A squad in Eugene, Ore. The
Emeralds had the best regular-season record in the Northwest
League in both 2011 and 2012. Eugene was 93-59 (.612) under
Murphy during the past two regular seasons.
Murphy was head coach at Notre Dame for seven
seasons, from 1988 to 1994, posting a mark of 318-116-1 (.732).
The Fighting Irish reached a regional final in three consecutive
years (1992-94). Murphy moved to Arizona State for the 1995
campaign and went 629-284-1 in 15 seasons with the Sun Devils.
He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year four times and his Sun
Devils made four trips to the College World Series. Murphy was
forced to resign from ASU after the 2009 season.
Including two seasons as head coach at Claremont-Mudd
Scripps and one year as skipper at Maryville (Tenn.), Murphy
amassed 1,002 victories in 25 seasons as a collegiate head
coach.
