For the past two seasons, Murphy was manager of the Padres’ short-season Single-A squad in Eugene, Ore. The Emeralds had the best regular-season record in the Northwest League in both 2011 and 2012. Eugene was 93-59 (.612) under Murphy during the past two regular seasons.

Murphy was head coach at Notre Dame for seven seasons, from 1988 to 1994, posting a mark of 318-116-1 (.732). The Fighting Irish reached a regional final in three consecutive years (1992-94). Murphy moved to Arizona State for the 1995 campaign and went 629-284-1 in 15 seasons with the Sun Devils. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year four times and his Sun Devils made four trips to the College World Series. Murphy was forced to resign from ASU after the 2009 season.
