Vanderbilt and Florida
suspended, will resume on Saturday
Miami tops Virginia, Arkansas upends South
Carolina, OSU wins at Safeco
In
Nashville, Tenn., the top series of the weekend saw
second-ranked Vanderbilt with a 4-2 lead over No. 6 Florida
Friday evening when the game was suspended in the bottom of the
sixth due to rain. The series will resume on Saturday at 1 p.m.
No. 18 Miami 6, No. 1 Virginia 2
In Charlottesville, Va., Stephen Perez had a
two-run double to cap a five-run first as Miami took the ACC
series opener from Virginia in front of 4,058 fans at Davenport
Field. Rony Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with a homer and two runs for
the Hurricanes (17-7, 32-16). John Hicks went 1 for 4 with one
RBI for the Cavaliers (20-5, 43-6). Bryan Radziewski (8-2, 7 IP,
4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) registered the victory, while Sam
Robinson got the final out for his sixth save. Danny Hultzen
(9-2, 7 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) allowed multiple runs in
the first for the first time this season in taking the loss.
No. 20 Arkansas 6, No. 3 South Carolina 2
In Columbia, S.C., Dominic Ficociello went 4 for
5 with one run and one RBI as Arkansas started the SEC series
with a win over South Carolina in front of 7,672 fans at
Carolina Stadium. The start of the game was delayed for 2:03 by
rain. The Razorbacks (13-12, 33-15) scored two in the fourth to
snap a scoreless tie and never trailed. Matt Reynolds went 3 for
4 with two runs for Arkansas. Sean Anderson went 2 for 3 with
one run and one RBI for the Gamecocks (18-7, 39-11). DJ
Baxendale (8-1, 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K) earned the win, while
Trent Daniel (3 IP, 1 H, 1 UE, 2 BB, 3 K) notched his second
save.
No. 5 Oregon State 6, Washington 4
In Seattle, Ryan Barnes went 4 for 5 with three
runs and two RBI as Oregon State edged Washington in the Pac-10
series opener in front of a crown of 2,823 at Safeco Field. The
Beavers (15-4, 36-11) scored three in the fifth to take the lead
for good at 5-4. Kavin Keyes had two hits and three RBI for OSU.
B.K. Santy homered for the Huskies (4-15, 13-31). Scott Schultz
(3-0, 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while Tony
Bryant worked a hitless ninth with one strikeout for his 10th
save.
USC 5, No. 7 Arizona State 1
In Los Angeles, Andrew Triggs went the distance
as USC defeated Arizona State to kickoff their Pac-10 series at
Dedeaux Field. Triggs (4-3) allowed seven hits and one unearned
run with two walks and six strikeouts for his third complete
game of the season. The Trojans (9-10, 19-26) scored three in
the first and two in the second to take control. Adam Landecker
went 3 for 4 with one run for USC. Riccio Torrez had two hits
and one RBI for the Sun Devils (13-6, 35-12).
No. 8 Florida State 9, NC State 4
In Raleigh, N.C., Rafael Lopez homered twice as
Florida State powered past NC State. Lopez went deep to lead off
the game and added a two-run shot in the second for the
Seminoles (17-8, 38-12). FSU scored six over the final three
innings to secure the win. Sean Gilmartin (9-1, 7.1 IP, 7 H, 4
UE, 9 K) picked up the win, while Daniel Bennett (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1
BB, 1 K) registered his 10th save. Andrew Ciencin had two hits
and one RBI for the Wolfpack (11-14, 28-22).
Utah 7, No. 9 TCU 6 (11)
In Fort Worth, Texas, Utah scored two in the top
of the 11th and held on to nip TCU in the Mountain West series
opener in front of 3,842 spectators at Lupton Stadium. Shaun
Cooper scored on an error and Trey Nielsen (1 for 3, 3 RBI)
added a sacrifice fly in the 11th for the Utes (16-5, 26-16).
Josh Elander (2 for 5) had a RBI double with one away in the
bottom of the frame, but a pair of strikeouts ended the affair.
Austin Shackelford had two hits and two runs, while Nielsen and
James Brooks both homered for Utah. Jimmie Pharr went 3 for 4
with a homer and two RBI for the Horned Frogs (15-3, 34-15).
Tyler Wagner (3-1, 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) earned the victory
for the Utes.
No. 10 Cal State Fullerton 4, Long Beach State
2
In Fullerton, Calif., Noe Ramirez allowed two
hits and one run in eight innings as Cal State Fullerton edged
Long Beach State in front of 2,496 onlookers at Goodwin Field.
Ramirez (8-2) walked two and struck out seven in earning the
win. Nick Ramirez (1 IP, 1 H, 1 UE, 1 K) registered his 13th
save and also homered in the fourth to snap a 1-1 tie, giving
the Titans (15-4, 34-14) the lead for good. Michael Lorenzen
went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI for Fullerton. Ino Patron
and Matt Duffy both went 1 for 4 with one RBI for the Dirtbags
(8-8, 24-23).
No. 11 Oklahoma 6, New Mexico 2
In Norman, Okla., Michael Rocha went the distance
for the fifth time as Oklahoma defeated New Mexico at L. Dale
Mitchell Park. Rocha (10-2) tossed eight scoreless innings
before the Lobos (16-33) scored two in the ninth. Rocha allowed
seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Max White went 4
for 4 with two RBI for the Sooners (36-13). Mitch Garver had two
hits and a run for UNM.
No. 14 North Carolina 3, No. 12 Georgia Tech 2
In Atlanta, Colin Moran went 2 for 3 with a
homer, two walks and two RBI as North Carolina nipped Georgia
Tech in front of 1,280 fans at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Tar
Heels (17-8, 40-10) scored single runs in the third, fourth and
fifth before the Yellow Jackets (18-7, 35-15) put up two in the
bottom of the seventh. Jacob Esch had two hits and one RBI for
Tech. Patrick Johnson (9-1, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K) got the
win, while Michael Morin pitched the final 1.2 innings with no
hits for his sixth save.
