Van Doornum leads
Hawaii past San Jose State
Mississippi State edges Ole Miss, Dallas
Baptist nips Alcorn State
In
Honolulu, Jeffrey Van Doornum had a three-run triple to cap a
seven-run fourth as Hawaii beat San Jose State 8-2 Thursday in
the WAC series opener in front of 3,179 fans at Les Murakami
Stadium. After the first-place Rainbows (13-4, 28-20) got a run
in the bottom of the third, Zack Jones and Nick Borg drove in
runs in the top of the fourth as the Spartans (9-8, 31-19) took
a 2-1 lead. Breland Almadove went 2 for 4 with one run and one
RBI for Hawaii. Matt Sisto (4-4, 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K)
picked up the win for the Rainbows.
Mississippi State 7, Ole Miss 6
In Oxford, Miss., Brett Brownlee drove in two as
Mississippi State edged Ole Miss in the SEC series opener in
front of 8,144 fans at Oxford-University Stadium. The Bulldogs
(12-13, 31-18) scored three in the top of the eighth to take a
7-5 lead. The Rebels (11-14, 27-22) loaded the bases with no
outs in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play plated one
run and a strikeout stranded the tying run on third. Chad Girodo
(3-0, 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 K) earned the win, while Caleb Reed (2
IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K) recorded his 10th save. Alex Yarbrough
(2 for 5, 3 RBI) and Will Allen both homered for Ole Miss.
Dallas Baptist 4, Alcorn State 3
In Dallas, Jason Krizan doubled for the 36th
time, tying the NCAA single-season record, as Dallas Baptist
nipped Alcorn State in the series opener at Patriot Field. Joel
Hutter and Landon Anderson both had two hits and two runs for
the Patriots (34-15). Edgardo Salas and Eduardo Gonzalez both
had two hits and one run for ASU (22-24). Brandon Williamson
(9-1, 7.2 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K) got the win, while Chris
Haney (1.1 IP, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K) got his 11th save.
