Sclafani has five hits
as Dartmouth downs UMBC
Nelson homers in ninth for Campbell, BYU
beats San Diego State
In
Winter Haven, Fla., Joe Sclafani (right) had a career-high five
hits and Kyle Hendricks struck out 11 as Dartmouth downed UMBC
17-2 Thursday at Chain O’ Lakes Park. Hendricks (2-1) allowed
three singles and one walk in eight scoreless innings. The Big
Green (7-4) led 6-0 before scoring 11 in the eighth to put the
game away. The Retrievers (3-11) scored their two in the ninth.
Jake Carlson had two hits and four RBI, while Dustin Selzer
homered and knocked in three for Dartmouth. D.J. Ream had two
hits and one RBI for UMBC.
Campbell 9, Northwestern 6
In Buies Creek, N.C., Cameron Nelson ripped a
game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth as Campbell
outscored Northwestern at Taylor Field. The Camels (11-12)
trailed 6-5 in the ninth before scoring the tying run on an
error and winning it on Nelson’s three-run blast. The Wildcats
(5-13) had scored two in the top of the ninth to take the lead.
Nelson finished with two hits and two runs, while Jimmy
Brenneman added two hits and two RBI for Campbell. Paul Sneider
and Chris Kontos both had two hits for Northwestern. Jake Smith
(2-1) retired the final batter in the top of the ninth to pick
up the win.
BYU 8, San Diego State 4
In Provo, Utah, Jaycob Brugman had a two-run
single in a six-run first as BYU defeated Mountain West rival
San Diego State in its home opener at Larry H. Miller Field.
Larry Bernal (2 for 3, 1 R, 2 RBI) had a run-scoring double to
spark the first-inning outburst. Alex Wolfe and Bernal had
consecutive RBI singles in the fourth to complete the scoring
for the Cougars (2-2, 11-10). Jomel Torres had two hits and two
runs for the Aztecs (2-2, 6-16). Taylor Cole (3-1, 6 IP, 5 H, 4
R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) was the starter and winner for BYU.
Cal State Bakersfield 13, Ohio State 2
In Bakersfield, Calif., Andrew Letourneau and
Kevin Younger both drove in three as Cal State Bakersfield
defeated Ohio State in the first game under the lights at Hardt
Field. The game was knotted at 2 after three innings before the
Roadrunners (17-5) scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth,
four in the sixth and three in the seventh. Ryan McIntyre had
three hits and three runs for CSUB. Mike McCarthy (3-2) fanned
nine in eight innings to record the win. Ryan Cypret had a
two-run double in the third for the Buckeyes (6-9).
Appalachian State 8, Cornell 3
In Boone, N.C., Ryan Arrowood struck out 10 in
eight innings as Appalachian State topped Cornell at Smith
Stadium. Arrowood (3-1) allowed 10 hits and three runs with one
walk. Tyler Tewell hit a three-run homer in the sixth to put the
Mountaineers (11-11) ahead for good at 4-3. Trey Holmes had two
hits and two RBI for ASU. Brian Billigen went 2 for 4 with one
run and two RBI for the Big Red (1-12).
Southern Illinois 7, Dallas Baptist 4
In Carbondale, Ill., Southern Illinois rallied
for four runs with two down in the eighth to edge Dallas Baptist
at Abe Martin Field. The Patriots (13-9) led 4-3 in the eighth
before Wes Neece (3 for 5, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Jordan Sivertsen had
consecutive two-run single in the bottom of the frame for the
Salukis (6-15). Tyler Dray (1-0, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 UE, 1 BB, 2 K)
earned the win in relief. Nick Johnson had two hits and two RBI
for SIU. Tyler Robbins had four hits and one run for DBU.
New Mexico State 18, Binghamton 3
In Las Cruces, N.M., Chuck Howard went 4 for 4
with three runs and three RBI as New Mexico State thumped
Binghamton at Presley Askew Field. The Aggies (16-5) scored six
in the second and exploded for 10 in the fourth. Ryan Aguayo (3
for 3, 2 R) and Tanner Waite (2 for 5, 2 R) both drove in three.
Kyle Liner had a pinch-hit RBI double and scored in the seventh
for the Bearcats (4-12). Dan Reid (5-0, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K)
earned the victory as NMSU stretched its win streak to five.
