Iowa edges Notre Dame
on St. Patrick's Day
Fresno State tops Washington State,
Bucknell nips Indiana in 10
In
San Antonio, Texas, Mike McQuillan doubled and scored in the top
of the 10th as Iowa edged Notre Dame 4-3 Thursday on St.
Patrick’s Day in the opener of the Irish Classic at Wolff
Stadium. Keith Brand had a two-run single in the top of the
ninth to give the Hawkeyes (6-8) a 3-1 advantage. The Fighting
Irish (7-8) plated a pair in the bottom of the frame to force
the extra inning. Andrew Ewing drove in a pair for Iowa. Trey
Mancini and Herman Petzold both had two hits for Notre Dame.
Kevin Lee (1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while
Jarred Hippen (right) (8.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) had a
solid start for the Hawkeyes.
No. 20 Fresno State 7, Washington State 5
In Fresno, Calif., Brennan Gowens had three hits
and three RBI to lead Fresno State past Washington State in
front of 1,954 fans at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs (12-2) used a
four-run fourth to take control with a 6-4 lead over the Cougars
(9-5). Dusty Robinson had two doubles and drove in two for
Fresno State. Brett Jacobs and Tommy Richards both had two hits
and one RBI, while Derek Jones homered and scored twice for WSU.
Josh Poytress (1-0, 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 K) earned the win in
relief, while Charlie Robertson worked around a hit and a walk
in the ninth for his seventh save. Adam Conley (4-1, 6.2 IP, 10
H, 7 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 K) suffered his first loss.
Bucknell 5, Indiana 4 (10)
In Lakeland, Fla., Bucknell scored four in the
ninth and Gerry Runyan homered to lead off the top of the 10th
as Bucknell rallied past Indiana. The Bison (8-8) had one hit
over the first eight innings and trailed 3-0 before a two-run
single by Drew Constable sparked a four-run ninth. The Hoosiers
(11-6) tied it with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Steve
Carlin (2-0, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K) earned the win for
Bucknell. Micah Johnson had two hits and two RBI for Indiana.
Dartmouth 19, Akron 2
In Babson Park, Fla., Jason Brooks went 3 for 4
with a homer, three runs and five RBI as Dartmouth thumped
Akron. The Big Green scored multiple runs in four of the first
five innings, including seven in the third, in building a 14-0
lead. Joe Sclafani went 3 for 6 with a double, three runs and
two RBI, while Sam Bean, Jeff Onstott and Ennis Coble each had
three hits and two runs for Dartmouth. David Turnbull added
three hits and three RBI for the victors. Jeff Corzine had three
hits, including two doubles, for the Zips (3-12). Kyle Hunter
(1-1, 6 IP, 6 H, 1 UE, 3 BB, 2 K) was the starter and winner for
the Big Green.
Long Island 14, Butler 6
In Winter Haven, Fla., Pete Leonello and Diego
Perez both knocked in three as Long Island outscored Butler for
its fourth straight win. The Black Birds (7-6) got one in the
first and three in each of the next three innings to take a 10-5
lead. Leonello and Perez both had three hits and two runs, while
Tito Marrero went 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI for LIU.
Nick Hladek had two hits and drove in a pair for the Bulldogs
(7-6). Emerson Morillo (1-0, 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K) earned
the win in relief.
Utah 3, BYU 2
In Salt Lake City, Michael Beltran had the
game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as Utah nipped
BYU in the opener of their Mountain West series. The Cougars
(0-1, 8-9) scored single runs in the sixth and eighth to take a
2-1 lead before the Utes (1-0, 6-7) tied it in the bottom of the
eighth before winning in the ninth. C.J. Cron went 3 for 4 with
a run for Utah. Andrew Law had three hits and one RBI, while
Jaycob Brugman added two hits and two runs for BYU. Tyler Wagner
(0.2 IP, 1 K) earned the win, relieving starter Rick Anton (8.1
IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K).
Northern Illinois 3, Illinois 0
In Marion, Ill., Zach Oates went the distance as
Northern Illinois blanked Illinois at Rent One Ballpark. Oates
(1-3) allowed three hits and one walk with five strikeouts. The
Huskies (3-10) scored a pair in the sixth before adding one in
the eighth. Jamison Wells had two hits and two runs, while Joe
Etcheverry went 2 for 3 with two RBI for UNI. Josh Parr had two
of the three hits for the Illini (4-9). Kevin Johnson (1-3, 7.2
IP, 8 H, 3 R) struck out 11 for Illinois.
Southern Utah 10, Utah Valley 7
In Orem, Utah, Southern Utah scored four in the
ninth on its way to a win over Utah Valley at Brent Brown
Ballpark. The Thunderbirds (7-8) tied it at 6-6 with one in the
eighth on a base hit by Mitchell Kauweloa (3 for 4, 3 RBI). Bo
Cuthbertson (3 for 4, 3 R) and Kauweloa both had two-run singles
in the ninth for SUU. Taylor Shaw went 2 for 3 with a homer and
four RBI for the Thunderbirds. Chris Benson (3 for 5) and Goose
Kallunki (2 for 5) both drove in three for the Wolverines
(3-11).Chase Rezac (2-1, 4 H, 1 R, 1 K) earned the win for SUU.
Bradley 6, North Dakota State 5
In Winter Haven, Fla., Brad Kimball had the
game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as Bradley nipped
North Dakota State at Chain of Lakes Park. The Braves (10-6)
took advantage of four errors by the Bisons (1-15) in a
three-run fifth in taking a 5-3 lead. NDSU scored single runs in
the sixth and ninth to knot the score at 5. Rob Elliott drew a
two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth, stole second and came
home on Kimball’s base hit. Mike Tauchman went 3 for 4 with a
run and one RBI for Bradley. Tim Colwell and Zach Wentz both had
two hits, one run and one RBI for the Bisons. Justin Ziegler
(1-1, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R) earned the win in relief.
Georgia State 9, Harvard 3
In Atlanta, Joey Wood homered and knocked in four
as Georgia State beat Harvard at Panthersville for its sixth
straight win. Will Campbell (4-0) allowed six hits and three
runs in six innings with one walk and four strikeouts to earn
the win. The Panthers (15-4) scored two in the first and three
in both the fifth and sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Drew Shields (3
for 4, 1 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Mark Micowski (2 for 4, 1 2B, 3 R)
contributed to the Georgia State offense. Jeff Reynolds had two
hits, including a homer, for the Crimson (1-10). Rob Lind had
hits in his first two at-bats to set a school record by reaching
base safely for the 16th straight time, two away from the NCAA
Division I record.
