Knipp leads Indiana
past Pittsburgh
VCU outscores Princeton, Bucknell beats
Bradley, TAMUCC tops Iowa
In Winter Haven, Fla., T.C. Knipp had four hits
with three runs and two RBI as Indiana popped Pittsburgh 9-2
Monday. Brian Korte (1-0) went the distance for the Hoosiers,
scattering nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Both
teams scored two in the second, and IU put the game away with
five in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Alex Dickerson had
two hits, including a double, and three RBI for the Hoosiers.
Travis Whitmore went 3 for 4 with a double and a run for the
Panthers (8-4).
VCU 18, Princeton 6
In Richmond, Va., Taylor Buran went 4 for 6 with
two runs and three RBI as VCU outscored Princeton in the finale
of the Terry Sisisky Classic at The Diamond. The Rams (6-9)
scored in six of their first seven at-bats, including five in
the third and five in the seventh. Paul Nice (3 for 4, 2 R, 3
RBI), John Lenherr (2 for 6, 3 R, 1 RBI), Michael Cheatham (2
for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Nick Kime (3 for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) also had
big days at the plate for VCU. David Benson (1-0, 6 IP, 6 H, 4
UE, 2 BB, 7 K) was the starter and winner. Sam Mulroy had two
hits and two RBI for the Tigers (2-5).
Bucknell 4, Bradley 1
In Lakeland, Fla., Dylan Seeley allowed one run
in 8.1 innings as Bucknell beat Bradley. Seeley (1-2) scattered
eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Steve Carlin
recorded the final two outs for his third save. Mike Tauchman (3
for 4) knocked in the lone run for the Braves (9-5) with a base
hit in the top of the first. The Bison (6-7) tallied single runs
in the fifth and sixth before getting two in the eighth. Bob
Donato drove in two, while Drew Constable went 2 for 3 with a
double, two runs and one RBI for Bucknell.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5, Iowa 4
In Lubbock, Texas, Bobby Buckner had a three-run
double in a four-run first to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi past
Iowa at Dan Law Field. Brett Carnline (2-1) allowed four hits
and four runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings with three walks and
one strikeout. The Hawkeyes (5-8) scored one in the fourth and
Trevor Willis had a two-run double to cap a three-run seventh as
Iowa pulled to within one. Phillip Garcia got the final five
outs to earn his first save. Trey Hernandez and Matt Holland
both had two hits, one run and one RBI for the Islanders (12-7).
Kasey Carling had two hits, one run and one RBI for the Hawkeyes.
Columbia 17, South Alabama 5
In Mobile, Ala., Jason Banos and Eric Williams
both drove in five as Columbia bashed South Alabama at Stanky
Field. The Lions (4-3) scored in seven of their nine at-bats,
including four in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Banos and
Williams both had three hits, with Banos scoring twice. Nick Cox
(2 R, 1 RBI) and Jon Eisen (3 R, 1 RBI) also had three hits for
Columbia. Taylor White went 4 for 6 with a run for the Jaguars
(9-6).
Mercer 14, Harvard 3
In Macon, Ga., Thomas Carroll went 3 for 5 with
two doubles and five RBI to lead Mercer over Harvard at Claude
Smith Field. The Bears (14-5) used a six-run first to spark the
offense. Joe Winker (2 R, 2 RBI) and John Moreland (2 R) both
homered for Mercer, while Billy Burns went 1 for 3 with three
walks and three runs. Jeff Reynolds and Jake McGuiggan both had
two hits for the Crimson (0-9).
