Vickerson homer carries Mississippi State past Florida

Gainesville Super Regional

Mississippi State 4, #2 Florida 3 (Series tied 1-1)

 

In Gainesville, Fla., Nick Vickerson belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift Mississippi State over Florida to even their Super Regional series at one game apiece. The deciding contest will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Nolan Fontana had a sacrifice fly in the top of the third and Josh Adams (2 for 4) homered in the fourth as the Gators (49-17) took a 2-0 lead. Cody Freeman and Brent Brownlee had RBI singles in the seventh as the Bulldogs (38-24) tied it at 2. Mike Zunino (2 for 5) had a leadoff double and scored on a triple by Tyler Thompson as Florida took a one-run lead in the eighth. Jarrod Parks had a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth before the bomb by Vickerson (2 for 4, 2 R) gave MSU the victory. Bryson Smith had three hits for the Gators. Closer Caleb Reed (pictured) got the win in relief, going the final 5.1 innings with four hits, one run, one walk and two strikeouts to even his record at 1-1. Nick Routt (3.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R) was the starter for the Bulldogs, while Karsten Whitson (6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K) started for UF. Steven Rodriguez (3-3) threw one pitch and took the loss.

 

Chapel Hill Super Regional

#3 North Carolina 7, Stanford 5 (UNC wins series 2-0)

North Carolina advances to College World Series

 

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Michael Morin halted a Stanford rally in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth as North Carolina captured the Chapel Hill Super Regional and earned a return trip to the College World Series. It will be the fifth appearance in the past six years for the Tar Heels (50-14). Morin gave up a three-run double to Austin Wilson (2 for 4) as the Cardinal (35-22) pulled to within one at 6-5 with one away in the eighth. After a walk, Morin got a double play to end the threat. Jacob Stallings (3 for 5, 3 RBI) had a run-scoring single after a rain delay of more than three hours in the top of the ninth to give UNC an insurance run before Morin set down the side in the bottom of the ninth for his second save of the series and 10th of the season. Tyler Gaffney (2 for 4) had a run-scoring double in the first as Stanford took an early lead. Brian Holberton had a two-run double in a three-run fourth and Stallings added a two-run single in a three-run seventh as the Heels took a 6-1 lead. Kent Emanuel (8-1, 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Jordan Pries (6-6, 3.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K) took the loss.

 

Austin Super Regional

#7 Texas 5, Arizona State 1 (Series tied 1-1)

 

In Austin, Texas, Jordan Etier blasted a three-run homer down the left-field line in the top of the ninth inning to help Texas even its Super Regional series with Arizona State. Cole Green worked into the sixth inning for the Longhorns (48-17) before leaving with runners on first and third. Joey DeMichele delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 Texas, but reliever Hoby Milner avoided further damage. Clinging to that one-run lead in the seventh, Johnny Ruettiger reached on an infield single to second, where Etier made a nice play to keep the ball on the infield and delivered late to first. First baseman Tant Shepherd wheeled and fired home where Jacob Felts blocked the plate and kept Michael Benjamin from scoring from second. Etier (3 for 4) gave Texas breathing room with his second homer - and the Longhorns 17th - of the season. Ruettiger, Xorge Carrillo and Zack MacPhee had two hits apiece for the Sun Devils (43-17).

 

Charlottesville Super Regional

#1 Virginia 6, UC Irvine 0 (UVa leads series 1-0)

 

In Charlottesville, Va., Danny Hultzen and Cody Winiarski combined on the shutout, and Jared King blasted a three-run homer, as Virginia blanked UC Irvine in the opener of the Charlottesville Super Regional at Davenport Field. Hultzen (12-3) endured a weather delay of 1:23 in the fourth and allowed three hits in 5.1 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Winiarski allowed one hit and two walks over the final 3.2 innings with two strikeouts to earn his first save. The Cavaliers (53-9) led 2-0 when King (3 for 4) clubbed his second homer of the season in the sixth to push the lead to 5-0. UVa added its final run in the seventh. Kenny Swab went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI for the Cavs. Sean Madigan walked three times for the Anteaters (42-17). Matt Summers (11-3, 6 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K) took the loss for UCI.

 

Columbia Super Regional

#4 South Carolina 5, Connecticut 1 (USC leads series 1-0)

 

In Columbia, S.C., Michael Roth allowed one unearned run in 8.1 innings as South Carolina clipped Connecticut in the Super Regional opener at Carolina Stadium. Roth (13-3) surrendered six hits and one unearned run with three walks and two strikeouts. John Taylor got the final two outs to secure the win.  Mike Nemeth had a RBI single in the top of the first to give the Huskies (45-19-1) the early lead. The Gamecocks (49-14) tied it in the fourth as Jake Williams walked and scored on a wild pitch. USC took the lead one inning later as Scott Wingo (2 for 5, 2 RBI), Christian Walker and Brady Thomas each has RBI singles to give the home team a 5-1 advantage. Evan Marzilli and Steven Neff both had two hits and a run for the Gamecocks. Doug Elliot had a hit and a walk for UConn. Matt Barnes (11-5, 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 6 K) suffered the loss for the Huskies.

 

Santa Clara Super Regional

California 7, Dallas Baptist 0 (Cal leads series 1-0)

 

In Santa Clara, Calif., Justin Jones allowed one hit and struck out three in six scoreless innings before leaving with an injury, and Chad Bunting and Marcus Semien each ripped three-run homers as Cal blanked Dallas Baptist. Jones (9-6), a lanky lefty, kept the Patriots (42-19) off balance all night allowing only a Jason Krizan hit - he entered allowing one hit per inning. Meanwhile, DBU entered with a .311 average and scores 8.5 runs a game. Bunting hit a three-run homer off Regional hero Brandon Williamson in the second, and Semien did the same in the top of the eighth. Logan Scott closed with three innings and two hits for the Golden Bears (36-21).
 

Tallahassee Super Regional

Texas A&M 6, #5 Florida State 2 (TAMU leads series 1-0)

 

In Tallahassee, Fla., Brandon Wood had a two-run single in a four-run seventh, and Ross Stripling fanned eight in seven innings as Texas A&M took the Super Regional series opener from Florida State at Dick Howser Stadium. Stripling (14-2) allowed seven hits, two runs and one walk. Kyle Martin pitched a scoreless eighth and Nick Fleece did not allow a run in the ninth to secure the victory. Matt Juengel homered in the top of the first for the Aggies (46-19) before the Seminoles (45-18) tied it in the bottom of the frame. Jayce Boyd went deep in the sixth to give FSU a 2-1 lead before A&M took the lead for good in the seventh. Wood finished with two hits and a run, while Kenny Jackson went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI for the Aggies. Rafael Lopez and James Ramsey both had three hits for the Seminoles, who stranded 10. Sean Gilmartin (12-2, 7 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 8 K) suffered the loss for FSU.
