Atlanta Regional

In the first game in Atlanta, Luis Pollorena and Caleb Reed combined on the shutout as Mississippi State stopped Southern Miss in front of 1,303 fans at Russ Chandler Stadium. Pollorena (7-5) allowed five hits and three walks in six innings with three strikeouts to earn the victory. Reed gave up three hits and one walk over the final three frames with four punchouts for his 12th save. Nick Vickerson had a RBI double in the first and Brent Brownlee added a two-run single in the sixth for the Bulldogs (35-23). B.A. Vollmuth, Marc Bourgeois and Mark Ellis each had two hits for the Golden Eagles (39-18), who stranded 10.

Nashville Regional

In Nashville, Tenn., Tyler Hannah had a three-run triple in a five-run eighth inning as Troy broke from a 4-2 game to upend Oklahoma State. Tyler Ray (12-0) allowed two early runs and finished with 7.2 innings, eight hits and five strikeouts to stay unbeaten on the year. T.J. Rivera went 3 for 5 with three RBI, and Adam Bryant had two hits and three runs for the Trojans (43-17), who improved to 3-8 in the NCAA tourney. Dane Phillips had two hits to lead the Cowboys (35-24), who led 2-0 after three innings.

In Charlottesville, Va., Will Roberts pitched a four-hit shutout with a career-high 14 strikeouts as Virginia blanked Navy at Davenport Field. Roberts improved to 11-1. Ben Nelson (6-6, 6.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R) took the loss for the Midshipmen (33-24-1). Danny Hultzen went 3 for 4 with three RBI for the Cavaliers (50-9). Hultzen had a two-run triple in the first to start the scoring and had a RBI base hit to spark a two-run third for UVa. John Hicks and Chris Taylor both had two hits for the Cavs. Greg Dupell had a pair of hits for Navy.

 

Los Angeles Regional

In Los Angeles, Kyle Zimmer pitched a four-hit shutout as San Francisco shut out UCLA in front of 1,925 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Zimmer (6-4) did not walk a batter and struck out 11 in recording his first complete game. Nik Balog went 4 for 4 with two RBI for the Dons (32-23). He had run-scoring singles in both the third and fifth. Adam Clear added a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth. Jeff Gelalich had two hits for the Bruins (33-23). Gerrit Cole (6-8, 7.1 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 11 K) took the loss. It was the first time in school history that San Francisco beat UCLA.

 

In the first game, UC Irvine scored five in the top of the first in outscoring Fresno State in front of 1,255 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Jordan Leyland went 2 for 4 with a homer, three runs and five RBI for the Anteaters (40-16). Ronnie Shaeffer had two hits and drove in three, while Tommy Reyes went 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI for UCI. Danny Muno had two hits and two RBI, while Pat Hutcheson went 2 for 2 with two runs for the Bulldogs (40-15). Matt Summers (11-2, 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) registered the win, while Greg Gonzalez (11-1, 4.2 IP, 12 H, 10 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) suffered his first loss of the season.

 

Austin Regional

In Austin, Texas, Sam Stafford allowed two hits and one run in seven innings as Texas took the win over Princeton in front of 6,110 spectators at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Stafford (6-2) walked three and struck out six. Corey Knebel allowed one hit in 1.2 innings to record his 17th save. The Longhorns (44-15) scored two in the first before the Tigers (23-23) got one in the fifth. Texas added two in the fifth and one in the sixth before Princeton finished the scoring with a pair in the eighth. Tant Shepherd went 1 for 2 with a homer, two walks, two runs and two RBI, while Mark Payton was 2 for 2 with one RBI for the Longhorns. Matt Bowman had two hits, including a double, one run and one RBI for the Tigers.

 

In the earlier game, pinch-hitter Jason Bagoly snapped a 2-2 tie with a RBI single in the top of the 11th as Kent State nipped Texas State in front of 5,178 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Pinch-runner Nick Hamilton scored on a passed ball for a second run in the 11th for the Golden Flashes (44-15). George Roberts went 3 for 3 with one RBI for Kent State. Andrew Stumph went 2 for 4 with one run for the Bobcats (40-22). Kyle McMillen (1-2, 2.1 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the win for the Flashes. Kyle Hallock (6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K) was the starter for Kent State. Carson Smith (9 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K) started for Texas State.

 

Chapel Hill Regional

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Kent Emanuel and Michael Morin combined on the shutout as North Carolina blanked Maine in front of 2,269 fans at Boshamer Stadium. Emanuel (7-1) scattered seven hits over eight innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Michael Morin retired the side in order in the ninth with one strikeout. Jacob Stallings had a three-run homer to cap a four-run first for the Tar Heels (46-14). Jesse Wierzbicki went 3 for 4 with a double, one run and one RBI for UNC. Taylor Lewis and Joey Martin both had two hits for the Black Bears (32-23).

 

In the first game, Matt Tenaglia had a two-run single to highlight a six-run seventh as James Madison erased a 6-5 deficit in beating FIU in front of 1,553 onlookers at Boshamer Stadium. Jake Lowery went 3 for 4 with a homer, three runs and three RBI, while David Herbek had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI for the Dukes (41-17). The Panthers (40-19-1) got five home runs, all solo shots, from Pablo Bermudez, Garrett Wittels (2 for 4), Mike Martinez (2 for 4, 2 R), Yoandy Barroso (2 for 4) and Jabari Henry. D.J. Brown (9-1, 7.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K) picked up the win in relief for FIU.

 

Clemson Regional

#1 Clemson 11, #4 Sacred Heart 1

In Clemson, S.C., John Hinson went 3 for 3 with a homer, three runs and three RBI as Clemson clobbered Sacred Heart in front of 5,194 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers (42-18) scored four in the first, one in the second and six in the third. Chris Epps had two hits and three RBI, while Phil Pohl went 3 for 5 with two doubles for Clemson. Derick Horn had two hits for the Pioneers (34-22). Scott Firth (5-1, 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K) picked up the victory.

 

In the first game, Hayes Orton went 5 for 5 with three RBI, and Tommy La Stella homered twice and drove in three as Coastal Carolina roughed up Matt Barnes in a rout of Connecticut. The Chants (42-18) roughed up Barnes (11-4) to the tune of nine hits and seven earned runs in 4.1 innings. Anthony Meo (10-3) pitched into the seventh, allowing nine hits and one earned run and striking out seven for Coastal. La Stella homered to lead off the fourth to start a four-run frame that saw nine batters come to the plate. Orton had a two-run single, and Tucker Frawley added a RBI single to make it 7-0. L.J. Mazilli had three hits and a RBI for the Huskies (41-18-1).
 

College Station Regional

#1 Texas A&M 11, #4 Wright State 0

 

In College Station, Texas, Jon Prosinski tossed a six-hit shutout as Seton Hall surprised Arizona in front of a crowd of 2,562 at Olsen Field. Prosinski (7-4) walked one and struck out three, using 123 pitches to complete his start. The Pirates (34-23) scored all their runs in the fourth. Sean Gusrang went 2 for 4 with a double and a run, while Giuseppe Papaccio was 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI for Seton Hall. Bryce Ortega and Bobby Rinard both had two hits for the Wildcats (36-20). Kurt Heyer (8-4, 6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) took the loss for Arizona.

 

In the second game, Michael Wacha and two relievers combined on the shutout as Texas A&M blanked Wright State in front of 4,896 fans at Olsen Field. Wacha (8-3) allowed five hits and one walk in six innings with two strikeouts to pick up the win. Steve Martin allowed two hits in two innings with one strikeout before Estevan Uriegas fanned one in a hitless ninth to secure the shutout. Matt Juengel and Kevin Gonzalez both had two hits, including a homer, and three RBI for the Aggies (43-18). Jake Hibberd and Zach Tanner both had two hits for the Raiders (36-18).

 

Columbia Regional

#1 South Carolina 2, #4 Georgia Southern 1

#2 Stetson 8, #3 NC State 7

 

In Columbia, S.C., Michael Roth held Georgia Southern to one unearned run in seven innings as South Carolina pulled out the victory in front of 8,091 fans at Carolina Stadium. Roth (12-3) allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Matt Price fanned three over the final 1.2 innings to notch his 16th save. Brent Pugh scored on an error in the third for the Eagles (36-25). Brady Thomas had a sacrifice fly in the fourth as the Gamecocks (46-14) tied it at 1. Adrian Morales had a run-scoring single in the sixth to give South Carolina the lead. Andy Moye (7-2, 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) went the distance for GSU.

 

In the earlier contest, Nick Rickles singled home pinch-runner Sean Emory from second in the bottom of the ninth as Stetson nipped NC State in front of 5,223 spectators at Carolina Stadium. The Wolfpack (34-26) led 5-0 after three before the Hatters (42-18) put up three in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 7-5 advantage. NC State tied it with two in the seventh on a homer by Danny Canela (3 for 5, 4 RBI). Mark Jones went 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBI, while Mitchel Brennan had a dinger and drove in two for Stetson. Harold Riggins went 4 for 5 with a two-run homer and Brett Williams went 3 for 5 with two runs for NC State. Jake Boyd (9-1) allowed two hits and struck out six in three scoreless innings of relief.

 

Corvallis Regional

#1 Oregon State 7, #4 UALR 4

#2 Creighton 2, #3 Georgia 1

 

In Corvallis, Ore., Ryan Barnes went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI as Oregon State topped UALR in front of 2,858 fans at Goss Stadium. Barnes missed the cycle by a home run. The Trojans (24-33) scored two in the first and two in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Beavers (39-17) answered with two in the bottom of the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the eighth. Danny Hayes homered in the sixth and Garrett Nash went deep in the eighth for OSU. Scott Schultz (4-0, 1.1 IP, 2 BB, 3 K) got the win in relief, while Tony Bryant fanned one in a hitless ninth for his 11th save. Greg Garcia had two hits and two runs for UALR.

 

In the opening game, Jonas Dufek outpitched Michael Palazzone as Creighton edged Georgia in front of 1,153 spectators at Goss Stadium. Dufek (12-1) allowed five hits and one run with one walk and 10 strikeouts to earn the victory. Pallazzone (10-5) went the distance as well, with seven hits and two runs in eight innings with no walks and five strikeouts. Jonathan Hester had a RBI double in the top of the seventh for the Bulldogs (31-31) to snap a scoreless tie. Scott Thornburg and Anthony Bemboom both had run-scoring singles in the bottom of the seventh for the Bluejays (45-14).

 

Fort Worth Regional

#1 TCU 10, #4 Oral Roberts 2

#3 Dallas Baptist 3, #2 Oklahoma 2 (10)

 

In Fort Worth, Texas, TCU scored one in the first and four in the second on its way to a victory over Oral Roberts in front of a crowd of 3,276 at Lupton Stadium. Jantzen Witte went 3 for 4 with one run and three RBI for the Horned Frogs. Joe Weik had two hits and two RBI, while Brett Johnson added a pinch-hit two-run homer for TCU. Jared Schlehuber had two hits and a walk for the Golden Eagles (36-21). Andrew Mitchell (7 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K) earned the victory.

 

In the opening game, Jason Krizan had an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to plate the game-winning run as Dallas Baptist, one of the final teams selected for the NCAA tourney, upended Oklahoma. The Patriots (40-17) trailed 2-1 in the ninth before Ryan Behmanesh singled to open the inning and later scored on a two-out single from Austin Elkins to tie the game. DBU starter Brandon Williamson and OU starter Michael Rocha both were splendid, with Williamson giving up a Tyler Ogle double and allowing another run to score on a wild pitch. Rocha worked into the eighth, allowing only five hits and one earned run for the Sooners (41-18).

 

Fullerton Regional

#1 Cal State Fullerton 10, #4 Illinois 4

#2 Stanford 10, #3 Kansas State 3

 

In Fullerton, Calif., Tyler Pill tied his career high with 11 strikeouts as Cal State Fullerton downed Illinois in front of a crowd of 2,715 at Goodwin Field. Pill (7-3) allowed five hits and four runs in eight innings with three walks. The Fighting Illini (28-26) got a two-run single from Casey McMurray (2 for 3) in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 4. The Titans (41-15) scored two in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth to take control. Pill (2 for 3), Greg Velazquez (3 for 4) and Nick Ramirez each drove in two for Fullerton. Matt Dittman had a two-run homer in the second for Illinois.

 

In the regional opener, Mark Appel pitched a seven-hitter as Stanford took care of Kansas State. Appel (6-6) struck out eight in recording his second complete game of the season. Lonnie Kauppila had four hits and two RBI for the Cardinal (33-20). Kenny Diekroeger had a RBI single in the second before Brian Ragira and Kauppila both had a run-scoring base hit in the third as Stanford took an early 3-0 lead. Kent Urban went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI for the Wildcats (36-24).

 

Gainesville Regional

#1 Florida 17, #4 Manhattan 3

#2 Miami (Fla.) 7, #3 Jacksonville 2

 

In Gainesville, Fla., Florida set a school record with 23 hits in an NCAA tournament game in manhandling Manhattan in front of 2,339 fans at McKethan Stadium. The Gators (46-16) scored five in the first, four in the second and seven in the third in building a 16-0 lead. Preston Tucker went 3 for 6 with two homers and five RBI for Florida. Tyler Thompson (3 R, 1 RBI) and Daniel Pigott (1 R, 3 RBI) both had four hits, while Mike Zunino went 3 for 4 with a homer, three runs and two RBI for the Gators. Ramon Ortega went 3 for 3 with a double and a run for the Jaspers (34-18). Karsten Whitson (8-0, 3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K) picked up the win.

 

In the first game, Miami broke open a tight game with four in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Jacksonville in front of a crowd of 1,473. Dale Carey had a RBI single in the eighth for the Hurricanes (37-21). Corey Janson hit his first career homer, while Rony Rodriguez drove in two and Zeke DeVoss scored twice for Miami. Daniel Gulbransen went 1 for 2 with a walk and one RBI for the Dolphins (36-23). Steven Ewing (8-2) allowed one hit and one run in six innings with three walks and two strikeouts to earn the victory.

 

Houston Regional

#1 Rice 14, #4 Alcorn State 2

#2 Baylor 6, #3 California 4

 

In Houston, Abe Gonzales went the distance as Rice handled Alcorn State in front of 4,133 fans at Reckling Park. Gonzalez (8-2) allowed seven hits and two runs with no walks and four strikeouts. Ryan Lewis went 4 for 6 with three RBI, while Michael Fuda went 3 for 6 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI. Eduardo Gonzalez homered for the Braves (27-29).

 

In the first contest, Baylor built an early 6-0 lead and held on to defeat California at Reckling Park. The Bears (30-26) scored one in the first, two in the second and three in the third to take a 6-0 advantage before the Golden Bears (31-21) got one in the seventh and three in the eighth to make it close. Landis Ware drove in two, while Logan Vick (1 for 3, 1 BB) and Jake Miller (0 for 1, 3 BB) both scored twice for Baylor. Chadd Krist went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI for Cal, missing the cycle by a homer. Logan Verrett (7-5 7.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the victory, while Max Garner (1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) recorded his eighth save.

 

Tallahassee Regional

#1 Florida State 6, #4 Bethune-Cookman 5

#3 Alabama 5, #2 UCF 3

 

In Tallahassee, Fla., Mike McGee delivered a two-strike single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning as Florida State escaped Bethune-Cookman. Ryan Durrence went 3 for 4 with two homers and three RBI, and D.J. Leonard (two-run shot) and Peter O'Brien (solo shot) also homered for the Wildcats (36-24), who led 3-1 before FSU (43-17) scored four times in the fifth. Parker Brunelle and Sherman Johnson each had two-run singles in the inning. Brian Busch (6-2) worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts to post the win, and Daniel Bennett earned his 15th save. That duo retired Bethune-Cookman in order in the eighth and ninth inning. Roman Lancara (1-1) suffered the loss in 2.1 innings of relief.

 

In the opener, Alabama scored single runs in five of the first seven innings in defeating UCF in front of 2,832 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Austen Smith went 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBI for the Crimson Tide (34-26). Josh Rosencrans had two hits and two runs, while Brett Booth went 3 for 5 for Alabama. Ronnie Richardson was 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBI for the Knights (38-22). Nathan Kilcrease (8-4, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB) struck out 10 in seven innings to pick up the win. Jonathan Smart (3 H, 1 R, 1 K) worked the final two innings for his 11th save. Brian Adkins (6-5, 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 2 K) took the loss for UCF.

 

Tempe Regional

#1 Arizona State 4, #4 New Mexico 2

#3 Charlotte 3, #2 Arkansas 2

 

In Tempe, Ariz., Joey DeMichele had a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as Arizona State rallied past New Mexico in front of 2,806 fans at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils (40-16) trailed 2-1 before Johnny Ruettiger had a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Deven Marrero laid down a sacrifice bunt and looked like he reached first on an error, but was called out on runner’s interference which sent Ruettiger back to first. ASU head coach Tim Esmay was ejected after questioning the call. Riccio Torrez drew a walk and a wild pitch put Ruettiger on third and Torrez on second. DeMichele then homered to right to end the contest. DeMichele finished with two hits and four RBI. Luke Campbell had a two-run single in the sixth for the Lobos (20-40). Mitchell Lambson (6-3, 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) got the win in relief of Brady Rodgers (8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 10 K). Rudy Jaramillo (4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K) pitched eight solid innings for New Mexico.

 

In the opener, Andrew Smith was brilliant over 7.1 innings as Charlotte did what it did best - pitch, play defense and get a few timely hits - in shocking Arkansas. Smith (10-4), the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, allowed only one run on five hits and struck out four to lower his ERA to 1.81. The 49ers (43-14) earned their third tourney win, thanks in part to an unlikely occurrence. Sophomore Corbin Shive (2 for 4) ripped the first homer of his career, a two-run shot on a 2-2 pitch, to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Corey Shaylor later came around to score on a grounder from Justin Roland. The Razorbacks (38-21) scratched back in the third when Tim Carver doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Collin Kuhn. In the ninth, Kyle Robinson hit a solo homer off Corey Roberts, a starter making his first relief appearance of the year. He struck out three of the six batters he faced.
