Last NCAA Appearance:
2010 (3-0 at Los Angeles Regional, 2-1 at Los Angeles Super
Regional, 3-3 at College World Series)
Notes: UCLA is back in
the field after losing in the College World Series championship
to South Carolina. The Bruins boast one of the most dominant
pitching staffs in the country, which makes up for a rather
light offense. Trevor Bauer dominated to the tune of nine
complete games and three shutouts in his 15 starts. The bullpen
was seldom used as he averaged nearly nine innings a start,
limiting opponents to a .152 average. Adam Plutko emerged as a
fantastic weekend arm, holding opponents to a .184 average. Then
there’s Gerrit Cole, who proved more human than in the past but
still dominant despite a 6-7 record due in part to a lack of
offense. Opponents hit only .234 and he tossed four complete
games. As a pitching staff, the Bruins struck out better than
one an inning (528 in 485 innings) and boast a .199 BAA.
Offensively, UCLA strikes out a lot – 420 on the season or
nearly eight a game. Dean Espy and Beau Amaral lead the team in
total bases and combined for 38 extra-base hits. Cody Regis has
the most pop with six homers.

Last NCAA Appearance:
2009 (0-2 at Irvine Regional)
Notes: Fresno State is
back in the NCAA tourney for the fifth time in six years and has
its most complete team since winning the College World Series in
2008. Coach Mike Batesole was a star at Oral Roberts and spent
four years in the Dodgers organization. Dusty Robinson was named
the WAC Player of the Year and pounded out 39 extra-base-hits
(20 doubles, 3 triples, 16 HR). Danny Muno, who has a brother
who plays at San Diego, led the team in hits (67), runs (46) and
tallied an incredible 45 walks (against 27 Ks). Ace Greg
Gonzalez is 19-2 in his two-year FSU career - he went 8-2 with a
6.54 ERA last year and is now 11-0 with a 1.43 ERA and two
complete games this year. Josh Poytress also had a breakthrough
season, lowering his ERA from 5.87 last year to 2.80 this year.
In fact, Fresno can credit its pitching turnaround as the key to
its success. Last year's team had an ERA of 6.05 - this year,
it's 2.84. Nine pitchers have tallied more than 28 innings.
