First-time
appearances in the College World Series
Vanderbilt has earned its first berth in the
College World Series, making it three straight years and four of
the past five in which a team is in Omaha for the first time.
Five teams have made their first trip to the CWS
since 2007 and four have come away with at least one victory. UC
Irvine went 2-2 in 2007, while Louisville was 1-2 that same
year. There were no newbies in 2008, but Virginia went 1-2 in
2009 while Southern Miss dropped both games. A year ago, TCU
went 3-2 in its first appearance in Omaha.
Including Vanderbilt, there have been 11 teams
reach the CWS for the first time since 2000, after only five
advanced to Omaha for the first time during the 1990s.
The Commodores are the 110th different team to
play in the College World Series. Kentucky is the lone squad in
the SEC not to reach Omaha.
No conference has had all its current members
play in the CWS. Like the SEC, the Pac-10 has one team without a
visit to Omaha, the Washington Huskies. There are two each from
the ACC (Maryland, Virginia Tech), the Big 12 (Kansas State,
Texas Tech) and the Missouri Valley (Evansville, Illinois State)
looking for their first appearance in the CWS.
There are 14 schools that reached the CWS but no
longer participate in Division I baseball: Cal State Los
Angeles, Colgate, Colorado State, Iowa State, Ithaca, New
Hampshire, New York U., Rollins, Springfield, Syracuse, Tufts,
Tulsa, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The last team to win a national championship in
its first trip to the College World Series was Minnesota in
1956.
