Stanford at Vanderbilt
highlights second weekend
There
are numerous intriguing matchups for the second weekend of the
2011 campaign.
The top series has No. 10 Stanford at No. 3
Vanderbilt. The Cardinal took two of three at No. 18 Rice last
weekend and picked up a midweek win over Cal to start the
season. The Commodores won four times on the West Coast last
weekend and beat Belmont on Wednesday to stay undefeated.
Pitching should dominate, as Stanford has a 2.57 team ERA,
compared to Vandy’s 2.20 ERA.
No. 14 Cal State Fullerton heads to Texas to take
on No. 4 TCU. The Titans took two of three from Long Beach State
and also lost to No. 19 North Carolina. The Horned Frogs won two
of three at home against Kansas before getting a win at Baylor
on Tuesday. The games on Friday and Sunday will be televised on
the Mountain West Sports Network.
No. 6 Texas heads out to Hawaii for the weekend.
The Longhorns took three of four from Maryland before falling to
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday. The Rainbows split a
four-game set with No. 16 Oregon to kick off the season.
East Carolina makes a return trip to No. 12
Virginia after the Cavaliers took two of three from the Pirates
to start the 2010 season in Greenville. UVa was impressive on
the road this past weekend, going undefeated at Auburn’s
Tournament. The Cavs defeated the host as well as UAB and
Arkansas State. ECU swept a three-game home series with
Youngstown State.
Other interesting series include Saint John’s at
Georgia Tech, Ole Miss at Houston, USC at No. 18 Rice and San
Diego against San Diego State.
There are some good fields in tournament this
weekend. Baseball at the Beach will include host Coastal
Carolina with Cal, Kansas State, NC State, Pacific and Western
Kentucky.
The Kleberg Bank College Classic has host Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi with Connecticut, Indiana and Oregon State.
South Alabama welcomes Alabama, Southeastern
Louisiana and UCF for its tournament.
This is the weekend for the Urban Invitational in
Compton and Irvine, Calif., with UC Irvine, Bethune-Cookman,
Grambling State and Southern. Saturday’s games will be broadcast
on the MLB Network, with Bethune-Cookman vs. UC Irvine at 4 p.m.
ET and Grambling State vs. Southern at 8 p.m. ET.
