Aplin drives in two as
Arizona State wins series at Arizona
Western Illinois outscores Centenary in
Summit series opener
In Tucson, Ariz., Andrew Aplin’s RBI single in
the seventh helped No. 3 Arizona State edge Arizona 4-2 Monday
evening to win the Pac-10 series. Aplin’s hit snapped a 1-1 tie
and put the Sun Devils (16-5, 43-6) on top 2-1. In the top of
the ninth, Aplin (2 for 3, 2 RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk and
Austin Barnes was hit by a pitch with the sacks full as ASU
added two insurance runs. Mitchell Lambson (6-2) pitched 2.1
innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts to earn the
win. Jordan Swagerty worked the ninth for his 11th save. Riccio
Torrez had two hits and Johnny Ruettiger scored twice for the
Sun Devils. Seth Mejias-Brean had two hits and one RBI for the
Wildcats (10-11, 31-18).
Western Illinois 18, Centenary 7
In Shreveport, La., Jason Summers belted a grand
slam to lead Western Illinois past Centenary in the Summit
series opener. The slam for Summers (3 for 4, 3 R, 6 RBI) in the
six-run second gave the Leathernecks (5-16, 13-34) control
early. WIU also scored five in the fifth and five in the seventh
and final inning. John Koszulinski (2 for 4, 3 RBI), Chris
Giglio (3 for 4, 3 R), Rich Mascheri (1 for 1, 4 BB, 4 R) and
Bryan Jordan (1 for 4, 1 HR, 2 RBI) contributed to the
Leatherneck offense. Scott Pasket (3 for 4, 2 RBI) homered for
the Gents (13-7, 24-22), while Jeff Schaffert added two hits and
three RBI.
