Sowers leads Oral
Roberts past Southern Utah
TCU tops BYU, Dallas Baptist beats
Grambling State for 1,500th win
In
Cedar City, Utah, Brett Sowers went 4 for 5 with three runs as
Oral Roberts won the Summit League series opener with Southern
Utah 14-4 Thursday at Thunderbird Park in a run-rule game called
after eight. Bryce Smolen (4-2) went the distance for the Golden
Eagles (5-0, 17-14), allowing eight hits and four earned runs in
eight innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Seth Furmanek
(2 for 4, 3 RBI) (pictured) had a RBI single in a two-run first
for ORU. The Thunderbirds (1-4, 7-24) tallied two in the third
to tie the game. Joey Winiecki (2 for 5, 3 RBI) had a two-run
single to spark a four-run fifth as the Golden Eagles took the
lead for good. Joe Goldenberg (3 for 4) homered in the sixth and
eighth for SUU, while Bennett Pickar (2 for 4, 3 R) belted a
three-run homer in the eighth for ORU.
No. 12 TCU 14, BYU 8
In Provo, Utah, Jason Coats had three hits and
three RBI to lead TCU past BYU in the opener of their Mountain
West series at Miller Field. Leading 6-3 after seven, Coats had
a RBI double in a seven-run eighth that put the game away. Coats
had a two-run homer in the first to start the scoring. Jerome
Pena (3 for 5, 1 HR, 3 R, 2 RBI), Josh Elander (3 for 4, 2 R, 1
RBI), Brance Rivera (3 for 5, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Aaron Schultz (3
for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) all had big days at the plate for the Horned
Frogs (6-3, 25-7). Brandon Relf (3 for 3, 1 R, 1 RBI) and
Jonathan Cluff (3 for 5, 1 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI) paced the offense for
the Cougars (4-6, 16-17). Matt Purke (5-0) allowed eight hits
and three earned runs in six innings with one walk and seven
strikeouts to earn the win.
Dallas Baptist 14, Grambling State 1
In Dallas, Will Lane fanned eight in seven
innings to lead Dallas Baptist past Grambling State. It was the
1,500th win in school history for the Patriots (19-15), dating
back to 1979. Lane (3-2) allowed three hits and one run in
recording the victory. Ryan Enos (2 for 5, 4 RBI) had a
run-scoring groundout in a four-run first and a two-run homer in
the second as DBU built a 6-0 lead. Jason Krizan (2 for 5, 2 R,
3 RBI) added a two-run double in the fifth and Ryan Behmanesh (2
for 4, 3 RBI) belted a two-run dinger in the eighth to complete
the scoring. Tyler Robbins (1 for 3) and Austin Elkins (2 for 4)
both scored three for the Patriots, while Josh Wilson and Travis
Meiners both had three hits for DBU. Adrian Turner had one hit
and one RBI for the Tigers (9-13).
SIU Edwardsville 7,
Missouri-St. Louis 3
In Edwardsville, Ill., Josh Hoguet pitched seven
scoreless innings as SIU Edwardsville defeated Missouri-St.
Louis at SimmonsCooper Complex. Hoguet (2-1) allowed two hits
and struck out a season-high seven. Dustin Brooks (2 for 3, 4
RBI) belted a three-run homer in the first for the Cougars
(10-22). Mitch Matecki (2 for 4, 2 R), Brooks, Joel Greatting
and Thad Hawkins all drove in a run in the fifth as SIUE built a
7-0 lead. Matt Horton had a two-run double in a three-run ninth
as the Tritons (10-28) avoided the shutout.
