Valenzuela helps
Arizona edge Gonzaga
Tanis knocks in four
as Mercer wins at Florida A&M
In
Spokane, Wash., Rafael Valenzuela had two hits, including a
homer, and two runs as Arizona edged Gonzaga 5-4 Monday at the
Patterson Baseball Complex. Valenzuela went deep in the third to
give the Wildcats (23-9) the early lead before the Bulldogs
(12-19-1) answered with a home run by Drew Heid (2 for 4, 2 R)
in the bottom of the frame. Seth Mejias-Brean had a two-run
single to cap a four-run sixth for Arizona, coached by Andy
Lopez (left). Clayton Eslick (2 for 4) had a RBI double and
scored in a three-run eighth as Gonzaga pulled to within one.
Augey Bill (1-0) earned the win in relief, going three innings
with one hit, one run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Mercer 13, Florida A&M 2
In Tallahassee, Fla., Jacob Tanis went 3 for 6
with two runs and four RBI to lead Mercer past Florida A&M at
Moore-Kittles Field. Tanis, who was named Atlantic Sun Player of
the Week earlier in the day, had a RBI single in the first to
start the scoring. Nick DiMauro (1 for 2, 2 R), Thomas Carroll
(2 for 6, 2 RBI) and Michael Langley (3 for 6, 2 RBI) each had
run-scoring singles in a five-run third as the Bears (20-17)
took a commanding 6-0 lead. Billy Burns went 2 for 4 with two
walk, four runs and four steals for Mercer. Jacob Matthews (2-0)
allowed five hits and one run in 5.0 innings with no walks and
four strikeouts to earn the victory. Oscar Santola had two hits
and a run for the Rattlers (6-18-1).
