William and Mary shuts out North Carolina in Chapel Hill

South Dakota State edges Arkansas, LSU outscores ULM

 

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Cole Shain (right) and two relievers combined on the four-hit shutout as William and Mary blanked No. 13 North Carolina 3-0 Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Shain (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out five. R.J. Archer surrendered one hit and fanned one in 1.1 innings of relief for the Tribe (6-4). Matt Davenport had one hit and one strikeout over the final 2.2 innings for his first save. In the sixth, Derrick Osteen and Stephen Arcure both doubled and scored to give W&M a 2-0 lead. Tadd Bower added a run-scoring single in the eighth. Chris Forsten finished with three hits for the Tribe. Garrett Davis (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits in five innings with six strikeouts for the Tar Heels (10-2).

 

South Dakota State 3, No. 15 Arkansas 2

In Fayetteville, Ark., South Dakota State scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth and held on to upset Arkansas in front of 1,311 fans at Baum Stadium. Eric Cain had a two-run double in the fourth and Jesse Sawyer homered in the sixth as the Jackrabbits (6-2) built a 3-1 lead. The Razorbacks (8-3) got one in the ninth, but fell one run short. Alex Oberle (1-0) allowed three hits and one run in 6.2 innings with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the victory. Trever Vermeulen gave up one hit and one run in the final 2.1 innings with one walk and three strikeouts to record the save. John Lee and Zach Rhodes both had two hits for SDSU. Collin Kuhn and Brett Eibner both drove in runs for Arkansas.

 

No. 1 LSU 18, ULM 7

In Baton Rouge, La., Blake Dean drove in four as LSU defeated ULM at Alex Box Stadium. Dean had three hits, including a double and a home run. Leon Landry went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and three RBI for the Tigers (12-0). In a seven-run fourth, Trey Watkins smacked a two-run homer, Micah Gibbs added a three-run dinger and Mikie Mahtook had a two-run double as the Tigers took a 12-1 lead. Dean went deep in the sixth and added a two-run double in the seventh to cap the scoring. Judd Edwards went 3 for 3 with two runs and one RBI for the Warhawks (5-5).

 

No. 4 Arizona State 4, Grand Canyon 2

In Tempe, Ariz., Kole Calhoun had a two-run single to help Arizona State get past Grand Canyon in front of 3,380 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. Pinch-hitter Colin Courtland had a two-run single in the top of the sixth to give the Antelopes the lead. Calhoun’s two-run single in the bottom of the frame tied it at 2-2. The Sun Devils (12-0) took the lead in the seventh as Zach Wilson touched home on a throwing error and Raoul Torrez added a run-scoring single. Brady Rodgers allowed two hits and one run in five scoreless innings with six strikeouts for ASU. Josh Moody (1-0) got the win in relief with three hits, two unearned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Jake Barrett struck out the side in the eighth and Jordan Swagerty repeated the feat in the ninth for his third save.

 

No. 6 Texas 4, Texas State 3

In Austin, Texas, Paul Montalbano’s two-run single capped a three-run eighth as Texas rallied past Texas State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Daniel Neuman doubled and scored in the top of the eighth to give the Bobcats (5-6) a 3-1 lead. Kyle Lusson had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame to pull the Longhorns (9-3) to within one. Montalbano’s two-out base hit gave Texas the lead. Chance Ruffin fanned one in the ninth for his fourth save. Montalbano and Kevin Keyes both had two hits for the Longhorns.

 

No. 7 Florida 8, Illinois State 2

In Gainesville, Fla., Austin Maddox had a three-run homer as Florida defeated Illinois State at McKethan Stadium. Tyler Thompson had a two-run single in a three-run fifth as the Gators (8-2) built a 5-1 lead. Maddox went deep in the sixth to push the advantage to 8-1. Kamm Washington had three hits and three steals for Florida. Jake Thornton had two hits and one run for the Redbirds (4-6). Hudson Randall (2-0) allowed four hits and one run in five innings with no walks and five strikeouts to earn the victory.

 

No. 8 TCU 15, UT Arlington 2

In Arlington, Texas, TCU used an eight-run seventh to put away UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark. Josh Elander had an RBI single to spark a four-run first for the Horned Frogs (9-2). Michael Choice belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame for the Mavericks (4-7). Matt Curry went deep in the top of the sixth as TCU took a 5-2 lead. Kyle Von Tungeln’s two-run double highlighted the eight-run seventh as the Horned Frogs took a 13-2 advantage. Jason Coats had three hits, two runs and two RBI for TCU. Cody Dyvig had two hits for UTA.

 

No. 9 Coastal Carolina 9, Wake Forest 4

In Conway, S.C., Coastal Carolina scored four in both the seventh and eighth to rally past Wake Forest. Steven Brooks had a two-run homer in the first for the Demon Deacons (6-7). Tommy La Stella doubled and scored in the bottom of the frame for the Chanticleers (12-1). WFU added single runs in the second and sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Rico Noel had an RBI double and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh for Coastal. Jose Iglesias had a two-run single to cap the four-run eighth for the Chants. Steve Davis went 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI for Coastal. Mike Murray and Austin Stadler both had two hits for the Demon Deacons.

 

No. 10 Louisville 9, Indiana 7

In Louisville, Ky., Phil Wunderlich homered twice and drove in five as Louisville outscored Indiana at Jim Patterson Stadium. Wunderlich had a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Cardinals (12-0) an early 2-0 lead. He added an RBI single in the sixth and belted another two-run shot in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. Cade Stallings had a run-scoring double later in the eighth to give Louisville the lead. J.J. Ethel added an RBI single to complete the scoring. Kyle Grieshaber and Ryan Wright both scored twice for the Cardinals. Micah Johnson also homered twice and knocked in five for the Hoosiers (4-7).

 

No. 12 UCLA 3, UC Riverside 2

In Los Angeles, Niko Gallego had a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth as UCLA nipped UC Riverside at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. After the Bruins (10-0) scored single runs in each of the first two innings, Eddie Young had an RBI double and Robert Brantly added a run-scoring single in the sixth as the Highlanders (7-5) tied it at 2-2. Steve Rodriguez had a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth and was sacrificed to second. Chris Giovinazzo entered as a pinch-runner, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Gallego’s sacrifice fly. Cody Keefer had three hits for the Bruins. Brian McConkey had two hits and a run for UCR.

 

No. 14 Miami (Fla.) 19, UCF 2

In Orlando, Fla., Stephen Perez went 4 for 6 with six RBI as Miami mauled UCF at Jay Bergman Field. Perez had a grand slam in the seventh as the Hurricanes (8-3) scored in seven of the first eight innings. Harold Martinez (2 R, 2 RBI) and Nathan Melendres (2 R) both had three hits for Miami. Frankie Ratcliff had two hits, four runs and three RBI for the Hurricanes. Ronnie Richardson had two hits and Chris Duffy homered for the Knights (7-6).

 

No. 18 Ole Miss 14, Austin Peay 4

In Oxford, Miss., Tim Ferguson homered and scored three as Ole Miss pounded Austin Peay at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Ferguson went 3 for 5, while Kevin Mort went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for the Rebels (10-2). Ferguson went deep in a two-run first and Matt Tracy added a two-run shot in the second as Ole Miss built a 4-0 lead. The Rebels put the game away with four in the fourth and five in the fifth. Jon Clinard had an RBI double to cap a four-run sixth for the Governors (8-4). Zach Miller and David Phillips both drove in three for Ole Miss. Clinard had four hits and Adam Browett added three hits for Austin Peay.

 

No. 19 Rice 8, Sam Houston State 1

In Houston, Anthony Fazio allowed three hits and one run in six innings as Rice stopped Sam Houston State at Reckling Park. Fazio (1-1) walked three and fanned four in earning the victory. Craig Manuel had a two-run double in a five-run second, and Rick Hague launched a two-run homer in the fifth as the Owls (8-5) built a 7-0 lead. Steven Sultzbaugh had three hits, two runs and one RBI for Rice. Chris Andreas had two hits and one RBI for the Bearkats (3-10).

 

No. 20 Oklahoma 8, Dallas Baptist 4

In Dallas, Chris Ellison went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI to lead Oklahoma past Dallas Baptist at Patriot Field. The Sooners (12-1) scored three in the first, one in the second and two in the third to build a 6-0 lead. J.R. Robinson (1-1) allowed five hits and two runs in 7.1 innings with one walk and a career-high eight strikeouts. Ryan Duke got the final out for his sixth save. Ross Hubbard had a two-run homer in the third for OU. Jason Krizan, Austin Knight and Ryan Enos all homered for the Patriots (7-5).
