Hanover has three hits
as LSU pops Pepperdine
Arizona State outscores Cal Poly, UNC gets
past Gardner-Webb in ninth
In Baton Rouge, La., Tyler Hanover went 3 for 4
with two runs as No. 1 LSU got past Pepperdine 8-1 Thursday
evening at Alex Box Stadium. Matt Gaudet drove in three for the
Tigers (8-0). Chris Matulis (2-0) allowed four hits and one run
with two strikeouts in five innings to earn the victory. Micah
Gibbs had an RBI single in the first before the Waves (3-5) tied
it in the second on a homer by Ryan Heroy. Leon Landry’s
sacrifice fly in the fourth put LSU ahead to stay. Mikie Mahtook
had a two-run single in a four-run eighth for the Tigers.
No. 5 Arizona State 12, Cal Poly 9
In Surprise, Ariz., Raoul Torrez smacked a grand
slam in the seventh as Arizona State outscored Cal Poly in the
Coca-Cola Classic at Surprise Stadium. The Mustangs (3-5) scored
three in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. Riccio
Torrez tied it with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame
before his brother’s slam put the Sun Devils (8-0) on top for
good. It was the first time both Torrez brothers went deep in
the same game. Zack MacPhee had two hits, two runs and three RBI
for ASU. Luke Yoder (3 for 4, 2 R), David Van Ostrand (2 for 4,
3 RBI), Ross Brayton (2 for 4) and J.J. Thompson (1 for 2, 3 R,
2 BB) all homered for Cal Poly.
No. 13 North Carolina 6, Gardner-Webb 5
In Chapel Hill, N.C., Ryan Graepel had a
game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to carry
North Carolina past Gardner-Webb at Boshamer Stadium. Graepel
had a sacrifice fly in the fifth that gave the Tar Heels (7-1)
their first lead at 5-4. Josh Drewery had a run-scoring double
in the seventh for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-7) to even the score
at 5-5. Tommy Coyle led off the ninth with a base hit for UNC.
He moved to second on a walk and was sacrificed to third before
Graepel’s base hit ended it. Ben Bunting had two hits and two
runs for the Tar Heels. Drewery finished with three hits,
including a home run, and four RBI for Gardner-Webb.
No. 14 Oregon State 10, UC Riverside 3
In Surprise, Ariz., Matt Boyd homered and
recorded the win as Oregon State topped UC Riverside in the
Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz. After the Beavers (6-2)
scored four in the second, Boyd (2 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) smacked a
two-run shot in the third, his first career home run, to give
OSU a 6-0 lead. Boyd (1-0) went 6.2 innings with four hits and
three runs with seven strikeouts. Michael Hur homered in the
fourth and Dan Pellegrino added a two-run blast in the seventh
as the Highlanders (6-3) narrowed the margin to 6-3. In the
bottom of the frame, Rob Folsom had a two-run triple and Parker
Berberet followed with a two-run homer as the Beavers pushed
their lead to 10-3.
San Diego State 12, Kentucky 4
In San Diego, Calif., Addison Reed held Kentucky
in check as San Diego State won at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Reed
(2-1) went six innings with five hits and two runs with one walk
and six strikeouts. Matt Parker (4 for 5, 2 R, 5 RBI) had
run-scoring singles in the third and fifth and a three-run homer
in the seventh as the Aztecs (4-6) built a 10-2 lead. Brandon
Meredith drove in four for SDSU. Cody Farris had two hits and
two RBI for the Wildcats (7-1).
NC State 10, Xavier 7
In Raleigh, N.C., Andrew Ciencin went 5 for 5
with six RBI as NC State outscored Xavier at Doak Field at Dail
Park. Ciencin had a run-scoring single in a two-run first. The
Wolfpack (7-1) added a run in the second before Bobby Freking (3
for 5, 2 R) tied the game with a three-run homer in the fifth
for the Musketeers (1-6). Ciencin added a RBI single in a
two-run fifth. Ciencin doubled and scored in the eighth and
launched a grand slam in the eighth to give the home team a 10-3
lead. Xavier scored four in the ninth, including a three-run
double by Daniel Rod. Kyle Wilson had one hit, three walks and
three runs for NC State.
Oklahoma 5, USF 4
In Norman, Okla., Caleb Bushyhead had a RBI
single with two outs to cap a two-run rally in the bottom of the
ninth as Oklahoma edged USF in the opening game of the Sooner
Classic at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Bulls (1-7) led 4-2 in the
eighth before Kaleb Herren’s pinch-hit homer in the bottom of
the eighth pulled the Sooners (8-1) to within one. Luis Llernia
had three hits and three RBI for USF.
Stanford 10, UC Davis 6
In Davis, Calif., Kenny Diekroeger belted a grand
slam to cap a six-run sixth as Stanford stopped UC Davis. Ben
Clowe finished with three hits for the Cardinal (5-3), while
Jake Stewart tripled and smacked a two-run homer in the third.
The Aggies (4-5) led 4-2 after five before Stanford took the
lead for good in the sixth. Scott Lyman had three hits and three
RBI for UC Davis.
