Gyorko, Fontanez headline preseason all-Big East team
Junior
shortstop Jedd Gyorko of West Virginia was named Preseason
Player of the Year and USF junior right-hander Randy Fontanez
was selected Preseason Pitcher of the Year to highlight the 2010
Big East Preseason All-Conference Team, as voted by the head
coaches and released by the league office.
Gyorko batted .421 a season ago with 96 hits, 28
doubles, eight home runs and 58 RBI. He was a unanimous
selection at shortstop for the preseason all-conference team.
Gyorko is a second team preseason All-American by Collegiate
Baseball and the NCBWA.
Fontanez was 7-3 as a
sophomore with a 3.09 ERA. He was second in the Big East in ERA
and innings pitched (99.0). Fontanez was a unanimous pick on the
preseason all-conference squad.
Other unanimous selections on the Preseason
All-Big East Team include Louisville first baseman Andrew Clark
and Connecticut outfielder George Springer.
The 2010 season begins on Friday, Feb. 19. The
second annual Big East/Big Ten Challenge will take place the
second weekend of the season in Florida, with 11 schools
participating. The first weekend of conference play is March
26-28, with all 12 teams in action. At the
conclusion of the regular season, the top eight teams will
participate in the 2010 Big East Championship May 26-30 at
Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The title game will be
televised on ESPNU.
